Hedley & Bennett and Sunday Morning Coffee
I had the most incredible afternoon last week. I visited the company Hedley & Bennett and discovered the most amazing woman and aprons!
Get ready to be super excited and super inspired. Today, I am going to take you on a tour of the Hedley & Bennett operations. I am also doing a giveaway with Ellen Bennett at Hedley & Bennett!! Read on for all of the details.
Season 2 Volume 14
Today I am also sharing with you Sunday Morning Coffee. This is a place to share, learn, explain, dream, and have fun.
Ellen Bennett is the founder of Hedley & Bennett and one of my favorite people ever! She is equal parts inspiration, grit, brilliance, and fun. She started Hedley & Bennett when she was working as a chef and recognized the need for the chefs and kitchen crew to feel a sense of dignity and pride in the kitchen.
Prior to Hedley & Bennett, the kitchen-issued aprons were ill-fitting and entirely uninspired. Ellen grew Hedley & Bennett into the leading designer of aprons and chef wear.
You can recognize a Hedley & Bennett apron if it has this ampersand logo on the front! Did you know the H&B aprons can be found in 6000 restaurants and on almost every cooking show on TV? Next time you are in a restaurant or watching a cooking show, look for the “&” logo on the apron pocket.
I took this photo at the H&B building. Aren’t the colors amazing?
One of the walls in the H&B offices proudly traces the timeline of the company from the inception of the apron. It details how the aprons were born from tenacity, perseverance, and an amazing woman who knew there was a better way to outfit chefs.
It was such an honor to spend an afternoon with Ellen and share in her dream.
Everything about Ellen Bennett is inspiring. She is one of those people that when you meet her, you know that you are in the presence of someone incredibly special. She is also someone who makes you feel like you can accomplish anything.
Hedley & Bennett has factories in both Los Angeles and Mexico. Did you notice the inspirational quote on the wall of the workroom? “If you dream it, you can do it.” That is so Ellen!
After we toured the offices and factory, I got to cook with Ellen! We made one of her favorite dishes. One that means home and happiness to her, Picadillo. I was Ellen’s sous chef and I chopped and stirred and learned how to re-fry beans. This recipe was fresh and easy and so, so good.
Picadillo might be my new favorite dish to make! Be sure and check out the Instagram post tomorrow for the video of Ellen and me cooking together!

Something New
Ellen Bennett’s Book Dream First, Details Later
Ellen told me about her book, Dream First, Details Later which is pretty much the motto of my life.
I ordered a copy right away and sat down to read it. I read the entire book in an evening (yes, I am a very fast reader). When I was done I turned on the TV and the new cooking show, Next Level Chef, was on. What was the first thing I noticed? The Hedley & Bennett ampersand logo was on all of the aprons the chefs were wearing. That made my day!
About the Book
As a 24-year-old line cook, Ellen Marie Bennett couldn’t stand the kitchen staff’s poorly designed, cheaply made aprons. So when her head chef announced he was ordering a new batch, she blurted out, “Chef, I have an apron company”—even though she had no company, no business plan—just a glimmer of a design idea and a business license. Through hustle and a willingness to leap into the unknown, she built that first order into the company Hedley & Bennett is today, making aprons and kitchen gear worn by many of the world’s best chefs and home cooks everywhere.
