The Seasons of Motherhood and Sunday Morning Coffee

Motherhood has a way of changing slowly and all at once, moving through seasons you never fully expect until you are standing in them.
This Mother’s Day, I found myself reflecting on how much this role has shaped my life, from raising my boys to now watching them become wonderful fathers themselves, and how, somehow, with grandchildren and growing families, motherhood just keeps getting better.

Thanks for joining me for Sunday Morning Coffee. This is a place to share, learn, explain, dream, and have fun.

About Me

There are many important jobs in life, but for me, being a mother has always been the most important.
Not the easiest. Not the most predictable. And certainly not the one with the clearest instructions. But without question, the most meaningful.

When my boys were little, motherhood felt very physical and immediate. Busy mornings, school lunches, baseball games, homework, late nights, and all of the little routines that somehow filled every hour of the day.
At the time, it often felt exhausting and wonderful all at once. I don’t think I realized then how quickly those years would pass or how deeply those ordinary days would become some of my favorite memories.

What surprises me now is that motherhood doesn’t stop evolving.
Just when you think you understand it, it changes again.

Watching my boys grow into husbands, fathers, and incredible adults has been one of the greatest joys of my life. There is something very special about seeing your children create their own lives and families.
You suddenly realize that all of those years of loving, teaching, encouraging, worrying, and showing up mattered more than you even knew.
And then came the grandchildren.

I honestly didn’t know it was possible for your heart to expand this much.
Being a grandmother feels different in the best possible way. There is less rushing and more noticing. More sitting on the floor, more laughter, more appreciation for tiny moments that once might have passed too quickly.

I find myself soaking everything in because now I understand how fast it all goes.

I also think becoming a grandparent gives you a new perspective on your own children. Watching them parent their children is emotional in a way I never expected. You see pieces of who they were as little kids mixed with who they are now, and it is incredibly moving.

One of the things I have learned over the years is that motherhood is not really about perfection. It is about presence. It is about showing up again and again in big moments and small ones. And it is about creating a home where people feel loved, safe, encouraged, and welcomed.
And maybe that is why it continues to feel so meaningful to me.
Because even though the seasons change, the love only grows.
Today, on Mother’s Day, I find myself feeling especially grateful. Grateful for my boys, for my growing family, for the chaos and joy of all of it, and for the incredible privilege of being called Mom and Grandma Lala.
And honestly, I think motherhood just keeps getting better.

My Latest Project

This week’s “project” was not something I made in my craft room, but honestly, it might have been one of the most important things I learned all year.
One early morning this week, Andrew and I were both up feeding his two-month-old daughter when his phone rang. He looked down at the screen, turned it toward me, and said, “Mom, why are you calling me?”
I immediately walked across the room, picked up my phone, and said, “I’m not calling you.”
But there it was on his screen. My contact information, my photo, my name, everything.
Andrew answered the call, and a man said he was with Leslie and that I needed help. At that point, we were both fairly certain the next sentence would involve money, some urgent demand to “help” me, and/or a very scary threat.
Instead, Andrew calmly told him that I was standing right next to him, then hung up.
I will be honest, this completely rattled me.
I have heard about scams like this before. We all have. But it feels very different when it happens to you personally, especially when the call appears completely legitimate. If I hadn’t been standing there, I honestly do not know how terrifying it might have sounded in the moment.
Andrew immediately texted our family group chat to warn everyone about what happened, and the entire experience made me realize something important.
We all need to do a better job protecting ourselves and our families.
One thing we talked about immediately was creating a family code word. Something only our family would know. If there is ever a true emergency, we can use that word to confirm the situation is real.
You should do this too.
We also talked about slowing down before reacting emotionally. These scams work because they create panic and urgency. They want you scared before you have time to think clearly.
A few other things we are doing now:
- Never trust the caller ID alone because phone numbers can be spoofed
- Hang up and call the person directly yourself
- Create a family safe word or phrase
- Track your location on your phone with at least one family member
- Use two-factor authentication on important accounts
- Be cautious about how much personal information is public online
- Warn older family members because they are often targeted
Honestly, the whole thing was unsettling, even though I was literally standing right there.
But maybe that is exactly why I wanted to share this story today. Because these scams are becoming more believable, more sophisticated, and more personal.
And the best thing we can do is talk about them openly, so we are better prepared if it ever happens to someone we love.

What Worked This Week

One of the things that worked really well this week was launching my new series, Mondays in the Craft Room. Honestly, I have wanted to do this for a long time because so many of you are curious not just about the projects I make, but how I actually make them.

The very first post in the series featured my Favorite Things embroidered shirt, which might be one of the most personal craft projects I have ever made. I loved sharing the process behind it, from creating the list of favorite things to organizing all of the embroidery designs and stitching them onto the shirt.
What surprised me most this week was how many messages I received from all of you saying the project inspired you to try something creative again.
That is exactly why I started this series.

I really want Mondays in the Craft Room to feel approachable and helpful, whether you have been crafting for years or are just getting started. And one thing I hear over and over is this: “I want to create a craft room, but I don’t know where to begin.”
So tomorrow’s post is all about Craft Room Essentials.

I am sharing the things you truly need, the things that simply make crafting easier, and a few things that definitely fall into the “want” category. Plus, I think there is a misconception that you need a giant room or expensive supplies to be creative, and that just is not true. Some of the tools I use most are actually very simple.
I am also sharing ideas for worktables, storage, lighting, cutting mats, and organizing spaces for sewing, embroidery, Cricut projects, clay crafts, and more.
This new series already feels like such a fun direction, and I cannot wait to keep sharing more behind-the-scenes creativity with all of you.

What a beautiful reflection on the changing seasons of motherhood and family life. I loved how you captured the joy of watching children become parents themselves. Your reminder about presence over perfection was especially meaningful. The family scam warning was also incredibly helpful and timely. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Mother’s Day!
