The End of An Era and Sunday Morning Coffee

I can hardly believe I’m writing this, yet I know most of you have already heard that JoAnn Fabrics is closing all its stores.

After filing for bankruptcy twice, the company is closing its doors for good, marking the end of a truly iconic era for sewers, crafters, and DIY enthusiasts like you and me.

Goodbye, JoAnn Fabrics: The End of an Era

This news hits me hard because JoAnn Fabrics has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s more than just a fabric store—it’s a place where my creativity flourished, my skills grew, and so many of my best projects began.

A Lifetime of Sewing, Thanks to JoAnn

35th Wedding Anniversary Memories

I started sewing when I was just eight years old, and by the time I was 10, my mom gifted me my very first sewing machine. That was the beginning of what would become a lifelong passion, and JoAnn was my go-to source for fabric, patterns, and notions every step of the way.

Throughout school and even college, I sewed constantly—clothing for myself, gifts for friends, and little projects that made my dorm room feel like home. When I got married, I even made my wedding gown, something I never would have been able to do without JoAnn’s aisles full of inspiration.

When my boys were young, my sewing machine never rested. I made Halloween costumes, school play outfits, home décor, and craft projects. Year after year, JoAnn was where I found exactly what I needed.

More Than a Store—A Creative Community

JoAnn Fabrics wasn’t just a place to buy fabric but a creative sanctuary. Walking into JoAnn felt like stepping into a world of possibilities, with bolts of fabric in every color, buttons and trims sparkling in perfect rows, and aisles of craft supplies calling my name.

I spent hours there carefully selecting materials, imagining new projects, and chatting with other shoppers who shared my love for sewing and creating. And I wasn’t just a loyal customer—I was fortunate enough to be a JoAnn Ambassador for years, working with them to inspire others through crafting and sewing.

Here are some of my favorite JoAnn posts.

Where Will We Go Now?

A Winter Color Palette

JoAnn Fabrics first opened in 1943, and it has been the fabric store for many of us for decades. The thought of all their locations closing is genuinely overwhelming.

Where will I buy fabric, yarn, craft supplies, and notions now? Where will I find just the right zipper or the perfect thread match? There are online options, but nothing compares to touching fabric, feeling its texture, and matching colors in person.

You need to head to a JoAnn store now, as they offer some pretty fantastic closeout sales (20 – 40% off). I did notice the “one-yard minimum” signs and coupons aren’t being accepted, but it’s worth stopping by.

Losing JoAnn Fabrics feels deeply personal—like saying goodbye to a beloved old friend. For so many of us, it has been more than a store. It has been a cornerstone of creativity, a space where skills were honed and dreams were stitched into reality.

I’ll forever be grateful for JoAnn’s inspiration, supplies, and memories. Goodbye, JoAnn. You will be missed more than words can say.

My Latest Project

My Latest Project

A brown jacket next to assorted fabric swatches in floral, solid, and patterned designs, arranged on a wooden table.

Can you guess what this will eventually be?

It’s my first embroidered quilt project on the back of my new jean jacket.

And yes, I have never done this before, which makes me a total beginner.

I am using a floral pattern, and the largest piece of fabric in the photo is my inspiration for design and colors. I started cutting out flowers as templates but realized how time-consuming it would be. So, I watched a few YouTube videos and figured out a much easier way to do this.

Wish me luck. Any thoughts?

And I promise to share everything.

    1. It really is so sad to see Joann’s go out of business! It was THE place to go to get fabrics for all my sewing projects. Whether it was sewing clothes, Halloween costumes or all my home Dec projects over the years! Plus they always had cute seasonal decor too!
Where will you shop for fabrics now?
      Hobby Lobby? Michael’s? Any others?

    2. Leslie, it does seem surreal about Joann’s. I can remember when there were several fabric stores around. Remember Calico Corners? There used to be a fabric store in Pasadena I would frequent but don’t recall the name. I think it was on Colorado and down some stairs in a basemen? Do you remember? We have a fabric store here in Glendora called Sew N Sew that’s been here a long time.

    3. A sign of the times, good things to do at home are now passe’. But for those of us who had early inspiration from our Aunt Hazel, to Jr High sewing class, we will find those fabrics etc to continue on in our world of creativity🩵

    4. I hate to think of life without JoAnn Fabric as fabric is something you want to see and feel in person. I know life will go on but wow – what a loss. Thank you for acknowledging how much the store has impacted us throughout the years.

    5. We will really miss this store! Thank you for sharing how it has impacted you for so many years. And what a beautiful wedding gown. Stunning!

    6. Oh wow your wedding dress is beautiful and what a trip down memory lane for you. Sad that JoAnn Fabrics is closing. I was sad when Woodward’s and Eaton’s closed down here in BC. Thank you for sharing.
