Even though the calendar says fall is here, I haven’t fully let go of summer just yet.

The heat has made it tough to get in the mood for cooler days and autumn leaves, but I’m starting small with fall clay pottery ideas that bring just the right touch of the season indoors. At the same time, I can’t help but look ahead and sketch out some Christmas craft plans. It feels like dipping one foot into fall while the other points toward the holidays.

Fall Is Here (But I’m Still Holding on to Summer!)

It’s officially fall, but if I’m being honest, it hasn’t exactly felt like it. With temperatures hovering in the 90s for weeks, it’s been hard to imagine cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, or sipping pumpkin spice anything.

When it’s that warm outside, my summer mindset is still in full swing.

A Montana Trip

This weekend, however, we’re in Big Sky, Montana, for a wedding, and the crisp, cooler weather here has been a welcome change. The mountains are showing the very first hints of fall color, the air feels fresh, and I’m finally starting to get excited about welcoming the season into our home.

It’s like Mother Nature gave me a gentle nudge: fall really is here, and it’s time to embrace it.

Of course, I had to share my western disco cowboy outfit, all from Amazon! (And the skirt comes in six colors!)

But the question is, how do you transition your home from summer to fall when it still feels like July outside? For me, it’s all about making small, intentional shifts that help me ease into the season without forcing it.

Start with a Color Palette

Fall doesn’t have to mean orange pumpkins everywhere. I like to begin with a color palette that feels right for the season but also works with what I already own. This year, I’m loving muted greens, warm golds, and soft neutrals. These colors hint at fall but still feel light enough for the warmer weather.

Layer in Texture

When the weather hasn’t cooled off, I focus less on heavy throws and more on texture. Woven baskets, linen runners, rattan chargers, and ceramic vases are easy ways to add that layered, cozy feeling without piling on thick blankets just yet.

Add Seasonal Florals

One of my favorite tricks for transitioning into a new season is swapping out florals. Summer is all about bright blooms, but fall calls for eucalyptus, hydrangeas in muted tones, and branches with golden or deep green hues. Fresh or faux, they instantly change the mood in a room.

Swap Pillow Covers

Instead of buying all new pillows, I keep a collection of pillow covers that I rotate seasonally. This is such a budget-friendly way to give a room an instant refresh. Velvet, knit, or textured fabrics in deeper colors can make even the sunniest room feel more fall-ready.

Bring in Small Seasonal Touches

I don’t go overboard at the start of the season. Instead, I sprinkle in a few pumpkins (real or faux), add candles in warm scents, and refresh my table with a fall-inspired centerpiece. These small touches let me embrace the season without feeling like I’m skipping over summer entirely.

So while I might still be hanging on to summer in spirit (and in temperature), I’m starting to welcome fall in small ways. Being in Montana has reminded me how refreshing it feels to shift into a new season, and I can’t wait to bring that same energy home.

So, get ready for some fall decor in our home, as I have only decorated our living room so far!

My Latest Project

My Latest Project

Lately, I’ve become increasingly excited about my handmade clay pottery. Pottery has become a new creative outlet for me, and recently I’ve found myself diving even deeper into learning new techniques.

I have been looking for fall clay projects! And these pumpkin plates are my new favorites.

I’ve been spending time on a site called Clayshare, and it has been an invaluable resource. Watching videos and tutorials has given me so many fresh ideas and the confidence to experiment with new designs.

Of course, that also meant a little shopping—because who can resist new tools? I’ve added a few more textured rolling pins to my collection, and I’m eager to use them on future projects.

I also cut some stencil shapes on my Cricut for fall-inspired tableware, including pumpkins and charcuterie boards. These stencils have worked out perfectly. I roll out the clay, roll out the texture with a rolling pin, and then cut out the shape with my homemade stencil.

These pieces feel like the perfect blend of seasonal charm and functional art, which is precisely what I love to create.

This past week, I spent hours in the studio and made a whole batch of new items. The only problem? I got so caught up in the process that I forgot to take enough photos! But don’t worry—I’ll be sharing everything once they come out of the kiln. I can’t wait to see how they turn out!

Next, I need to decide on the glaze. There are lots of fall colors to choose from!

My Biggest Challenge This Week

A Handmade Christmas – 16 New Crafts in 16 Weeks

Can you believe it? There are only 16 Fridays left until Christmas. I know—it sounds a little terrifying. But instead of letting that countdown stress us out, which it has been for me, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do something creative, festive, and fun together.

So I am launching a brand-new series called A Handmade Christmas!

Every Friday, starting next week, I’ll be sharing a new handmade Christmas craft right here on the blog. That means 16 new ideas between now and Christmas Eve—projects that are festive, unique, and totally doable whether you’re a beginner crafter or a seasoned maker.

Why Handmade?

For me, Christmas has always been about adding personal touches that make the season feel magical. Handmade decor, ornaments, and gifts bring warmth and character that you simply can’t find in a store. Plus, crafting is such a joyful way to slow down, be creative, and celebrate the anticipation of the holidays.

What to Expect

Each week’s project will be something you can actually use or display in your home. Some weeks will focus on decor—think tabletop trees, garlands, and table settings. Others will be gift ideas—the kind of handmade treasures your friends and family will love receiving. And of course, there will be plenty of ornaments and holiday keepsakes sprinkled throughout.

I’ve been sketching ideas, testing materials, and pulling together supplies for months. Honestly, I can hardly wait to start sharing them with you. From cozy textures and natural elements to a little bit of sparkle, this year’s crafts feel extra special.
