Mother’s Day Memories and Sunday Morning Coffee

Mother’s Day has definitely changed now that our sons are grown, but it’s so beautiful in ways I never imagined.
While I sometimes miss the days when I was at the heart of their world, there’s nothing more rewarding than watching them create their paths. Seeing my sons fall in love—and witnessing one become a father to his son, raising him with warmth and compassion—fills me with immense pride and joy. Our traditions might look different now, but our love has only grown deeper, and I wouldn’t trade this precious season of life for anything.

Season 5 Volume 19
Thank you for joining me for Sunday Morning Coffee. This is a place to share, learn, explain, dream, and have fun. Let’s get started!

About Me

Mother’s Day used to look a little different in our house. I remember those early years—homemade cards with backward letters, breakfast in bed made with too much syrup, sticky hugs, and the joyful chaos only young kids can bring. I was the center of their world, and they were the center of mine.

Fast-forward a few decades, and things have shifted. I’m still their mom (forever and always), but now my boys are grown. They’re professionals; two are husbands, one is a father, and one is a father-to-be. Watching them grow has opened my heart in ways I never imagined.

It’s such a joy watching your children become parents. Suddenly, all those lessons I worked so hard to teach—patience, love, humor, flexibility—are showing up in the next generation. I catch glimpses of how I mothered, reflected in how my sons parent or embrace their role as uncles, and it’s incredibly touching.
I’ll admit, it gets emotional. Seeing one of my sons gently rocking his little boy to sleep or hearing another discuss birth plans with his wife, excitement, and nervousness mingling in his voice—those moments are enough to bring tears to my eyes.
Yet, on days like Mother’s Day, I feel a gentle pull at my heart. I’m no longer the one planning the celebration or the center of their world—and that’s okay. It’s bittersweet. I miss those sweet traditions we shared when they were young and the heartfelt efforts they made to show their love. But now, they’re creating beautiful traditions with their families, and there’s nothing more wonderful than seeing that legacy continue.
And that is the greatest gift.

I wouldn’t trade this season of life for anything. It’s deeply rewarding to see my boys grow into wonderful men who love their partners and children with all their hearts.
There’s something special—even sacred—about stepping back and watching them take the lead, knowing I played a part in building the foundation they now proudly stand upon.

Being a mother to three sons will always be my greatest blessing and most cherished accomplishment. But watching them step into the next chapter—especially as one becomes a father—feels like a beautiful and unexpected reward for which I’m deeply grateful.
I’m constantly moved by the full-circle moments: lullabies I once sang now gently hummed to my grandson, and parenting advice I shared years ago being echoed (or playfully reimagined) in their own homes.

So yes, Mother’s Day looks a little different now—but in the most meaningful way. It’s no longer about the cards or gifts (though they still send the most beautiful flowers!).
It’s about legacy—love passed down through generations—and the quiet, overwhelming pride of knowing you raised kind, strong men who are now stepping into fatherhood with grace, just like their dad always has.
And that’s all I could ever want.

My Latest Project

It’s taken a year, but we are finally landscaping the front of our home. I am thrilled we have started, and it’s all getting planted … tomorrow!
This is what the front of our house looks like now, and even without the new plants, I already love it. Don’t you think it looks much better cleaned and ready for a new landscape design?

It feels as if you can see our home again!
The new landscaping plan is more of a “country garden” style and will be beautiful. It will be full, but it won’t be overgrown.

My Biggest Challenge This Week

The boys are coming!

Andrew, Matt, and Michael arrive Wednesday for the San Gabriel Country Club Annual Craven’s Golf Tournament. Dave and Matt are a twosome, and Andrew and Michael are a twosome. It’s a huge tournament with almost 200 teams from all over the U.S., and I cannot wait to host a big dinner (for thirteen) on Wednesday.
Ellie arrives on Thursday, and we will watch a lot of golf and have fun!

- Finish the front landscape.
- Finalize the backyard.
- Plan and cook the dinner for 13, which is Wednesday night.
