Fall is Coming and Sunday Morning Coffee

I love updating our home decor with the changing seasons, but I’ve always found it challenging to start decorating with fall decor early. And yet, fall is coming and just around the corner.

Thanks for joining me for Sunday Morning Coffee. August has traditionally been all about summer in our home, but as a content creator, I need to share seasonal ideas ahead of time. Why? Because I enjoy offering fall decor inspiration, and the earlier I share, the more helpful it can be.

About Me

My Pottery Barn inspiration photo for Fall 2024

Before you start worrying about fall decor, rest assured that I have held off as long as I could. Usually, I start on August 1st. But this year I am a bit later. I’m still in the planning stages, and it’s such a fun process!

Even though I’m navigating around fall decor boxes scattered throughout our home, I must admit that fall colors are gorgeous.

Incorporating peach, gold, and other fall hues with our home’s neutral backdrop last year was stunning.

Remember the color palette I created for my fall decor inspired by a Pottery Barn catalog photo last year? These were the colors.

A cozy living room with beige sofas, brown and orange pillows, a black round coffee table, and a color swatch showing shades of beige, brown, gray, and yellow. Natural light from large windows.

So, let’s savor this last week of summer (on my blog) before the leaves start to change. Just kidding!

Leaves don’t usually turn until late October or November in Southern California.

I’ll be sharing some of my past fall color decor inspiration and my new color palette this next week. I think you are going to love it!

Decorating for Fall with My Color Palette (Without Breaking the Bank)

A dining table is set with green and beige plates, amber-colored glasses, and a centerpiece of yellow and white leaves in a white vase. Woven placemats and beige napkins complement the setting.

Getting ready for a new fall color palette has been a fun project. Choosing the primary color was easy, as it was inspired by the new slipcovers I ordered from Calico. If you didn’t see the post, you can check it out here. And you will find out my inspiration color for fall 2025!

Sage Green Summer Kitchen Refresh

When I pick a new fall color palette, I don’t run to the store with a giant shopping list or max out my credit card. That is so not my style! My approach is always simple, intentional, and—most importantly—budget-friendly.

a collection of home decor items in the color palette of sage and taupe

The truth is, you don’t need to buy all-new decor to make your home feel fresh for fall. Instead, I start by shopping my home first. I walk from room to room, opening cabinets, peeking into storage bins, and looking for pieces I already own that work with my chosen colors. You’d be amazed how many “new” items you can find just by rearranging and re-imagining what you already have.

This year’s palette is soft sage greens and warm gold. (So much for keeping it a secret!) I love how these colors feel cozy yet still fresh, and they pair beautifully with my existing neutral base. As I gather decor, I pay attention to textures—think woven baskets, ceramic vases, and cozy knits—because texture adds just as much to the seasonal vibe as color does.

Last year’s palette was all about golds, so I intend to reuse a lot of the florals from the previous year.

Once I’ve pulled together what I already own, I decide what small additions will make the palette pop. I focus on three affordable updates:

  1. Florals – Faux stems are my go-to because they last year after year. This season, I am adding a few golden hydrangeas, muted eucalyptus, and soft green branches. They will look beautiful in vases I already had on hand.
  2. Pillow Covers – Instead of buying all-new pillows, I swap out the covers. This is one of the most budget-friendly tricks for changing a room’s look. A mix of gold velvet and textured green covers instantly makes the living room feel autumn-ready.
  3. A Few Accent Pieces – I allow myself a couple of new decor items each season. I have my eyes on a gold ceramic bowl for the coffee table and a green glazed vase for the dining room. Small pieces like these carry the color palette without overwhelming the space.
A decorative pumpkin made of layered green leaves sits on a wooden table, accompanied by plates and a vase with yellow leaves.

Because I’m thoughtful about what I bring in, I often spend less than $100 decorating for fall. It’s all about being intentional—choosing items that blend with what I already own, rather than replacing everything.

When everything is in place, the magic happens. My home feels refreshed, cozy, and ready for the season, but it’s still undeniably “me.” By re-using what I already have and sprinkling in just a few new touches, I’m able to embrace the beauty of fall without clutter or guilt.

So the next time you feel inspired to switch up your seasonal palette, remember—you don’t have to start from scratch. Shop your home, add a few thoughtful updates, and let your new colors shine. Your wallet (and your storage space) will thank you!

My Biggest Challenge This Week

Planning Ellie’s Baby Shower (and Finally Making Some Decisions!)

Elegantly set dining table with natural light streaming through the windows.
Ellie’s Bridal Shower in 2024

In just one week, I’ll be hosting a baby shower for my daughter-in-law, Ellie, and I could not be more excited.

I loved the decor (and cookies) I made for her bridal shower, so it’s time to top that!

The theme is PINK—which is a rare treat for me! With three sons and a grandson, pink is not a color that makes many appearances in our family celebrations. So naturally, I’ve gone a little overboard with ideas.

Okay, maybe more than a little.

For the past month, my brain has been buzzing with inspiration—Pinterest boards, saved Instagram posts, notes scribbled on scrap paper. Every time I see a cute pink napkin, floral arrangement, or cake design, I think, “Oh, I should do that too!”

Well, now it’s time to rein it in. The shower is almost here, and I need to start making actual decisions… and maybe pare down just a few of those ideas.

Three beige ceramic napkin rings with floral rose designs are arranged on a light wooden surface.
The napkin holders, before kiln firings and glaze.

One thing I have decided on is to incorporate handmade touches. You know I can’t resist a little DIY, especially for something so special. I’ve made two pottery pieces for the shower—rose-shaped napkin holders for each place setting, and a small gift for every guest (which I’m keeping under wraps until the big day!). These pieces make me so happy because they’re both personal and unique—things you won’t find in any store.

When it comes to the decor, I’ve gone all-in on pink. Soft blush table linens, pink glassware, floral arrangements in every shade from baby pink to deep rose, and whimsical accents like pink taper candles and ribbon-tied silverware. I’ve also ordered a few special items that will make the tablescape extra fun—think sweet little details that will make guests smile before they even sit down.

Here are some of my favorite pink tables I have created.

I have plenty of pink tableware, so I need to finalize the two tables for the shower.

Another decision I’m thrilled about: the dessert bar. I love the idea of guests being able to choose from a variety of treats, and let’s be honest—this is the perfect excuse to try out several recipes I’ve been eyeing. I’m planning on making five different desserts, all with their own pink flair. There will be a cake (but not what you expect!), and I’m thinking of adding cake pops, sugar cookies, and something berry inspired.

Now for the part I still need to nail down: the main menu. I’m leaning toward keeping it light and fresh—maybe a flavorful protein like roasted chicken or herb-grilled chicken breasts, paired with two beautiful salads. I’m envisioning something colorful and seasonal, like a spinach and strawberry salad with a poppy seed dressing, and perhaps a roasted vegetable and grain salad for heartiness.

The next few days will be all about finalizing the menu, organizing my prep schedule, and making sure all of the decor and serving pieces are ready to go. I’m so excited to see everything come together—and to celebrate Ellie and her sweet baby girl with the most joy-filled, pink-themed party ever.

I’ll be sure to share all of the details (and the guest gifts!) after the shower. Until then, I’ll be over here making lists, checking them twice, and maybe sneaking a taste of those desserts (for my husband to try) as I practice.

This week's to do list.
  • Finish ordering new fall decor items for our home.
  • Finalize and finish everything for the baby shower. I cannot wait!
