What Makes Me Happy and a Tour of My Craft Room

What makes me happy? Of course, my family, my marriage, our home, and dear friends top the list of what brings me the most joy. But there is somewhere else that I love, and it’s my craft room.

My family is the foundation of my life and the source of so much love and happiness. But if we dig a little deeper, past the obvious, into the space where joy meets creativity, you’ll discover my craft room makes me deeply happy, too.

A well-lit craft room with a vaulted ceiling, sewing and crafting supplies, a mannequin, organized shelves, a worktable, and a window with light curtains.
A bright, airy kitchen with white cabinets, wooden dining table, and wicker chairs. Sunlight streams in through large windows, highlighting yellow flowers on the table and counter.
You Made that?

My Craft Room

Yes, my craft room makes me very happy.

This room, tucked away on the upper floor of our home, has become so much more than a place to store supplies or work on projects. It’s a sanctuary. It’s where I dream, create, plan, experiment, and, most importantly, feel like myself.

Now that my craft room is finally organized (and I mean organized), it’s also become one of the most inspiring places in my life. There is a lot of space, and I can work on multiple projects at the same time.

Let me take you inside and show you why my craft room makes me so incredibly happy.

A Dream (Box) Come True

A craft room features organized white storage cabinets filled with supplies, a floral-covered chair, a rolling drawer cart, and a light-colored patterned rug.

Head up two flights of stairs, and you will enter our third floor. The first thing you will notice is the DreamBox. If you’ve never seen one, imagine a beautifully designed cabinet opening into a wall of perfectly organized, labeled, accessible craft supplies. It’s brilliant.

And yes, I have a lot of craft supplies. Years of creative projects, DIYs, seasonal decorating, party planning, and blog tutorials have built quite the collection. But now, thanks to the DreamBox, every item has a home. No more hunting through random bins or drawers for that one roll of washi tape or set of metallic markers. It’s all right there, visible, labeled, and within reach.

You have no idea how happy this makes me.

Sometimes, I don’t even start a project right away. I head up to the craft room, open the DreamBox, and let the inspiration wash over me. The colors, textures, and materials all start talking to me. That quiet spark of possibility is something I cherish.

If you are wondering about the chair, it is covered with vintage fabric, as our cat Kelly (who lives up here) loves to use it as a scratching tower.

New Adventures: Fashion Design & Draping

A dress form labeled "Collapsible Shoulder 12" stands in a craft room beside shelves of ribbon and rolls of wrapping paper.

See that dress form in the corner? It’s become a symbol of a new chapter in my creative journey. After recently losing 35 pounds, I found myself inspired to experiment with designing clothes. I’m not following a pattern, at least not yet. I’m playing with draping, sketching ideas, and letting the fabric guide me.

It’s thrilling, but it’s also deeply personal. Creating something from scratch that fits and flatters feels like an extension of self-expression.

Also, I’m rewatching Project Runway (for the third time!) while I work. What better motivation than watching incredibly talented designers whip up couture in 24 hours?

My Wrapping Station: Organized Joy

A craft room with rolls of wrapping paper, ribbons, scissors, paint, fabric, and other art supplies neatly organized on shelves and a table.

One corner of the room is home to my wrapping station, which brings me joy. I love wrapping gifts with layered paper, velvet ribbons, wax seals, hand-drawn tags, or even custom wrapping paper I create myself.

Now, with everything sorted—paper below, ribbons above, tape and tags tucked into drawers—I can wrap with ease and intention. No more mid-wrap scavenger hunts for double-sided tape!

A wall-mounted rack holds multiple spools of ribbon in various colors and patterns, with additional spools of ribbon arranged on a cart below.

There’s something meditative about wrapping a beautiful gift, and this station allows me to fully enjoy that process.

Sewing, Embroidery & the Return of My Machines

Two sewing machines sit on a table with a floral arrangement, a chair, and a lamp in a well-lit room with framed pictures on the wall.

The large worktable in the center of the room is the hub of activity. This is where my sewing machine and embroidery machine live, and they’ve seen a lot of action lately.

A Brother PE-770 embroidery sewing machine sits on a grid-patterned table, with a candle and chairs in the background.

I’ve recently returned to machine embroidery, working on monograms, simple logos, and thoughtful touches for gifts and home items. There’s something so satisfying about watching a design take shape stitch by stitch. And I love that I can now create personalized details that elevate even the simplest pieces.

My sewing machine is always nearby, too, whether I’m altering clothes, making pillow covers, or trying my hand at something new. It feels like such an extension of my creativity.

A New Creative Medium: Clay Hand Building

A tabletop displays rolling pins, textured rolling pins, stencils with floral patterns, sculpting tools, and cutting boards, set up for a craft or baking project.

My latest obsession is slab pottery. I just started my first clay hand-building class, and I am hooked. I already know this will be a big part of my creative life.

I find it magical to turn a flat slab of clay into a functional object by hand. I’ve cleared out space on the worktable specifically for this, and I’ve even reorganized several of the acrylic drawers to hold my new clay tools and projects.

I made these items in the first week of my class and used rollers to add the design and snow-white clay. These are wet clay and will dry, after which I will glaze them and add them to the kiln.

The tactile nature of clay and the grounding feel of working with my hands is what I enjoy about hand-building. It’s easy to imagine the pieces I want to make: platters, bowls, vases, and lots of creative items for the holidays.

This new chapter is just beginning, but it’s already feeding my soul.

The Craft Room as My Creative Office

A workspace with a laptop in front of a large monitor displaying project boards, surrounded by craft supplies and organizers on a white desk.

Beyond the crafts, this space has also become my creative writing studio. I work here daily, writing blog posts, planning social content, brainstorming new project ideas, and dreaming up collaborations.

Being surrounded by creative tools and half-finished projects keeps me in the flow. I’ll sit down to write and suddenly remember a photo I took of a holiday DIY last season or be inspired to sketch an idea for a new Instagram Reel.

This room holds more than just my supplies. It has my momentum. It keeps me inspired and connected to the heart of what I do.

Why This Room Makes Me So Happy

When I ask myself, “What makes me happy?” this room is a clear answer. Not because of the stuff (though I do love my organized bins of ribbon!)—but because of what it represents:

  • Freedom to explore.
  • Space to create without limits.
  • Inspiration at my fingertips.
  • Confidence to try new things.
  • This is a reminder that creativity is a lifelong gift that evolves with you.

It’s a room that reflects my journey as a mother, a maker, a business owner, and someone always curious to learn something new.

Final Thoughts

Three framed paintings of colorful stacked cylinders on reflective surfaces, each against a bright pink background, are displayed side by side on a light-colored wall.
I hung three of my paintings in the craft room.

Everyone deserves a space that makes them feel lit up inside, a room, a corner, a desk, a drawer, where their passions can breathe. For me, that space is my craft room.

Whether I’m making clay trays, designing clothes, wrapping gifts, or simply sorting my buttons (yes, that happens!), I find joy here. It’s my happy place. It keeps me grounded and energized, and it’s where some of my best ideas come to life.

So yes, I’m grateful beyond words for my family, friends, and the beautiful homes I get to live in and share. But when I need to reconnect with myself, recharge my creativity, or feel happy, you’ll find me upstairs—in the craft room, where the magic happens.

Just one question: What time does our crafternoon start? Does 1:000 work, I have next Tuesday open?

  3. Thank you for the tour, it’s lovely! I also have a craft room that I love to bits. You are so brave to introduce a new craft into your life! I have also been interested in adding clay into my life, but since I’ve already got so many hobbies I love I don’t dare add a new one. But I still can’t wait to hear all about your experience with clay. Share soon!

    1. Craft rooms are the best! I’m so excited about my clay journey, maybe you’ll be inspired to add another hobby! Hehe

  4. I noticed that your wrapping paper has a white “tab” closure around the to keep each tube closed. What are those? I use regular tape, but always a pain and usually results in tearing the paper when I try to unroll.
