The Best Valentine’s Cupcakes

| | |

Valentine’s cupcakes are a great alternative to traditional cakes and are perfect for sharing with your friends and family.

I wanted to create heart-shaped cupcakes but didn’t want to buy a heart-shaped muffin tin. So I made one. Then I used some amazing decorating tips that make these adorable frosting flowers instantly. Just squeeze and that’s all it takes to make these delicious flowers.

When baking cupcakes, it’s important to use the right ingredients and equipment. For the dry ingredients, you’ll need all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. For the wet ingredients, you’ll need eggs, milk, and butter.

I am also a fan of doctoring up a box cake mix by adding chocolate chips, fruit puree, sprinkles, or so many other options. For this recipe, I didn’t have a lot of time so I used my favorite gluten-free cake mix, King Arthur Gluten-Free Classic Yellow Cake Mix.

It’s really good!

As far as equipment goes, you will need the following:

How to Make Heart-Shaped Valentine’s Cupcakes

If you have followed me for a while, you know that I love to figure out how to make complicated things easy. If you are new to my blog, welcome and get ready to have some fun!

I could have purchased a new pan to make heart-shaped cupcakes, but I knew I could use an idea that would create heart-shaped cupcakes in a regular cupcake pan.

All you do is fold up a piece of foil and put it at the top of the muffin foil liner to create a heart-shaped form. If you want, you can add a small folded piece on each side to help form a point at the bottom.

How to Create Heart-Shaped Cupcakes

  • Mix your batter together
  • Line the cupcake pan with cupcake liners
  • Roll foil into a 1/2″ ball
  • Place the 1/2″ foil ball in between the liner and the pan, creating a heart shape
  • Pour a small amount of batter into the cupcake liner
  • Finish filling the cupcake liner about halfway full
  • Bake cupcakes per recipe (I am sharing my favorite cake/cupcake recipe below)
  • Let cool before decorating

Decorating the Valentine’s Cupcakes

Now that the heart-shaped cupcakes are cooled, my goal is to amplify the heart shape of the cupcakes with the decoration.

I first discovered cake decorating when I was eight years old. Our neighbor taught me how to do a few things, but it was minimal. Other than that, I have never taken a class, I’m self-taught.

I share this with you so that you aren’t intimidated to try cake decorating. The decorating tips do all of the work.

russian decorating tips to make flowers with frosting

These are the Flower Frosting Tips I used. They are about five times the normal size of a cake decorating tip but because of their shape, you don’t have to make individual petals for each flower. When you squeeze out the frosting, the entire flower comes out at once. It makes the entire process so much easier and almost foolproof.

I found a kit on Amazon that has everything I will ever need to make these super easy cupcakes.

Frosting the Cupcakes

So how do you get the multiple frosting colors in each flower?

You put multiple colors of frosting in the bag and the tips are designed to let you create an entire flower at once. For each cupcake, I made three flowers and it took less than one minute to make the entire thing!

Here is my favorite buttercream frosting recipe.

This Buttercream Frosting recipe is great for cakes, cupcakes, and more. Its unique flavor is just the best.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup nonsalted butter (do not warm)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 - 6 TBL coconut milk (I like Thai Kitchen Organic)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter until soft in a mixer for about two minutes.
  2. Add the sugar, vanilla, and three TBL of coconut milk.
  3. Add the remaining TBL of coconut milk as needed. If you are making roses, make sure the frosting is thick so it will hold its shape. If it gets too soft, place it in the refrigerator for about twenty minutes.
  4. When frosting cupcakes, place in the freezer for about one hour before decorating.
  • one – Frost the cupcakes lightly with frosting so the flowers will stick to the cupcakes.
  • two – Add coloring to the frosting to make the colors you want for your bouquet. I kept some white frosting too.
  • three – Using a spatula, line the inside of a pastry bag with frosting. Be sure to cover the inside of the bag with a thick layer. Try to get the icing down to the tube.
  • four – Pointing at a right angle, squeeze the frosting and slowly move the tip upwards.
  • five – When you reach the desired height, stop squeezing and quickly remove the tip. If the flower doesn’t work, just scrape it off and add another one.
  • six – To decorate the heart cupcakes, squeeze three roses on each cupcake.

For each cupcake, I added one or three flowers to the top. Then I took the leaf tip and added leaves. I just filled in the holes between the flowers with the leaves.

  1. Leslie,
For frosting, is it better to use gel food coloring or can I just use the liquid little bottles that I already have in my cupboard. I am trying not to get too many specialty products (and appliances) that I have to figure out how to store and organize.
Love these quick flowers tho and I will buy those fabulous tips!!
    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Nancy! I prefer gel coloring as I think it gives a richer color and you can use less of it but you can definitely use liquid! The tips are magic 🥰🙌🏻

  2. The cupcakes look too beautiful to eat, but I know if you baked them, the cakes are delicious!!! You should open a bakery….
