Nine Must-Haves for Amazing Bathrooms
We just remodeled two bathrooms in our Ventura beach house and I have come up with nine must-haves every bathroom needs.
Embarking on a bathroom remodel is like breathing new life into your daily routine. It’s an opportunity to transform your bland bathroom into a luxurious haven, where every visit becomes a pampering experience.
I was fortunate to work with Mission West Kitchen and Bath and Mission Tile West. They presented me with advice and options and helped me select the tile, plumbing fixtures, sinks, and basically, everything we needed for these two amazing bathrooms. Some of my favorites are the stunning marble tile, the shower with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a walk-in shower with a tiled-in tub, and the fanciest toilet bidet imaginable!
Bathroom Remodeling at the Beach House
Remodeling bathrooms is something I have done many times. In fact, these two bathrooms in our beach house were the 10th and 11th bathrooms I have remodeled.
Our Ventura beach house now has four bathrooms, all of which contain a shower. Two were remodeled ten years ago and in our latest remodel we added two new bathrooms in the primary suite and bunk room suite.
For all of the bathrooms in the beach house, (and five of the bathrooms in our Pasadena home), I worked with our great friends at Mission Tile West and Mission West Kitchen and Bath.
Mission Tile West is a family-owned business that was started almost forty years ago. We have been family friends for a very long time and our boys grew up with Thano and Kathy Adamson’s four sons. The Adamson family business started from a need to sell custom Mexican tiles. The business has grown as there are now three Mission Tile West locations which represent hundreds of tile manufacturers, and two tile factories manufacturing their own lines of tile. They also own Mission West Kitchen & Bath which sells plumbing fixtures, hardware, vanities, lighting, and countertops.
Mission Tile West is a local tile business in South Pasadena, California, and they also have two additional locations, one in Santa Monica, California, and the other in Costa Mesa, California.
I love working with them because their expertise has always been the reason why our remodeled bathrooms have turned out amazing.
The Beach House Primary Bathroom Remodel
Our Primary bath is so luxurious. With marble tile, dual sinks, a floor-to-ceiling glass shower, and a bidet, we love our new bathroom.
The Bunk Room En Suite Bathroom
The bathroom in the Bunk Room Suite features a step-in shower and child’s bath, honed marble, and a marble sink cabinet. It’s perfect for a family.
Nine Must-Haves for Amazing Bathrooms
After remodeling so many bathrooms, it was easy to come up with nine must-haves for every bathroom. I can’t wait to share with you these
#1 – Amazing Tile: Elevate Your Aesthetic
To transform your bathroom into a work of art, you need amazing tile. Mission Tile West provides a stunning array of options to suit your personal style, whether it’s a mosaic masterpiece, marble, bold patterns, or sleek and modern designs.
Here is the tile we used for both bathrooms.
Primary Bath – Honed White Pearl Botticino Polished Marble – 1.25″ hex, 3″x9″, 12″x12″, and 12″ x24″. Contact Mission Tile West for more information.
In the Bunk room bathroom, we used the same Carrara Polished Marble tile that we used in the bathrooms we remodeled ten years ago. We used 1″ hex, 3″x6″, 1/2″x12″, 12″ x 12″, and 12″x24″. Contact Mission Tile West for more information.
From the floor to the walls, let the tile be the canvas that showcases your unique vision.

#3 – Built-in Shower Tub: A Family Twist
There is no doubt we are a family who enjoys showers. But I have to be honest. I am not a big fan of showers built with bathtubs. Ten years ago, when we were redoing two bathrooms in the beach house I knew I needed a tub somewhere in our house.
Kathy Adamson from Mission West Kitchen and Bath shared an idea that was brilliant. She recommended we add a built-in tiled tub within the shower.
We loved her ideas so much that we did it again in the bunk room bathroom.
To do this, we built up the front threshold of the shower to about 16″. While it adds a bit of a step over the bottom of the shower, the shower actually can hold 12″ of bath water! It’s perfect for infants and toddlers and was the perfect solution for the beach house.
This innovative design allows you to enjoy a refreshing shower and also a child to enjoy a fun bath. And now we have two of these shower-baths in the beach house.
#4 – Great Robes: Wrap Yourself in Luxury
No bathroom is complete without a collection of plush, soft robes. Picture yourself emerging from your steam shower cocooned in a robe that makes you feel like royalty. The right robe is like a warm hug, embracing you as you step out into the world feeling relaxed and pampered.
I found these robes and had them embroidered. I even had one made for my grandson Graham. (He might need some time to grow into it!)
#5 – Toto Toilet: The Throne of Innovation
Say goodbye to ordinary toilets and welcome the Toto toilet—a true game-changer in bathroom technology. With features of a bidet, heated seat, and advanced cleaning functions, this toilet will revolutionize your daily routine. Experience comfort, cleanliness, and a touch of luxury with every visit to the throne. Hehe.
This is in the Primary bath: TOTO Drake 2 piece toilet with washlet 550 with a Soft Close Seat in Cotton White.
In the bunk room bath, we used the TOTO: Drake II two-piece toilet in Cotton White.
Both are available at Mission West Kitchen and Bath.
#6 – Long-Lasting Faucets: The California Faucets Difference
Don’t underestimate the importance of durable and stylish faucets. California Faucets is renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship, delivering faucets with good valves that stand the test of time.
In the Primary Bath we used theCAL FAUCETS: Montecito 8″ widespread faucet with zero-drain, lever handles – Polished Chrome.
In the Bunk Room bath, we used the CAL FAUCETS: Salinas 8″ widespread faucet with zero-drain, lever handles – Polished Chrome.
From elegant designs to impeccable functionality, these faucets add a touch of sophistication to your bathroom while ensuring long-lasting performance.
All California Faucets are available at Mission West Kitchen and Bath.
#7 – Decorative Elements: Infuse Personality and Style
A truly remarkable bathroom is a reflection of your unique taste and personality. Add decorative elements that speak to your style—be it a vibrant piece of artwork, a statement mirror, or charming accessories.
These finishing touches bring life and character to your space, transforming it into a personalized sanctuary.
#8 – Steam Shower: Unleash the Power of Relaxation
If you love a steam shower but can’t afford the luxury, try this. Install floor-to-ceiling glass doors and the glass doors enable you the chance to enjoy the steam anytime you want. And without the cost of an expensive steam shower, your bathroom becomes a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation
#9 – Sitting Bench: Take a Seat and Unwind
Last but certainly not least, a sitting bench in the shower adds a touch of comfort and convenience. Picture yourself relaxing on a tiled bench, allowing the warm water to wash away your worries. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, shave your legs, or simply enjoy a few moments of tranquility amidst the soothing ambiance of your shower.

The bathrooms are heavenly! Love all the marble. I can just see you guys wrapped up in those cozy robes on the top deck enjoying the sunrise and a cup of coffee or a sunset with a glass of wine after a great day on the beach. Hope you had a wonderful visit with Graham!!
Omg thanks so much! So happy with how they turned out ☺️ the best visit ever!
Gorgeous bathroom, Leslie! You have great style. And the toto bidet is a game changer! While on a recent trip, we had a funny discussion with our friends about how we all missed our toto bidets at home.
Hi Gretchen! Thanks so much- so happy with it all. It really is! 😆☺️
Your bathrooms are amazing! The tile work and fixtures are perfect!
The idea of the child’s bath is fascinating to me since I also dislike the shower/bath tub combination. What a wonderful solution! Would you say the 12 inches of water is about the same volume that would be in a regular tub? I can’t quite tell the dimensions of that shower enclosure. Also, how does one stop up the drain to collect the water? This is something I will definitely consider going forward!
My only negative is that the off-center toilet in the bunk room bath would drive me crazy! 🙂
Great work as always!
Your tile installers are true artisans. Their work is incredible and beautiful. Even though the tiles are all in the same color family, the different shapes and sizes add interest and texture. I have never seen better tile setting. Can you tell I am a bit jealous?
Omg you’re too funny, thank you Elle! I am so excited about it all! ☺️
Great advice. This is awesome. Thank you so. much for sharing.
Yay! I’m so glad you think so Renae! Thanks for being here ☺️
Do you find that you still like the bathrooms you remodeled 10 years ago?
