Sleepless nights were a huge problem in our beach house. Fortunately, Calico saved the day with Hunter Douglas roller shades.

Our primary bedroom at the beach house has five large windows. The view is spectacular but my husband and I wanted window treatments that provided privacy and light control while also adding style and elegance.

Sleepless Nights

It’s hard to believe these windows could be anything but amazing. But as soon as we finished our remodel and spent the night in our new home, we had a really hard time sleeping.

As much as we loved our new beach house, our primary bedroom felt like a fishbowl. The bedroom was all windows and at night it was so bright. The house and porch lights from our neighbor’s homes were bright and glaring.

We also didn’t have any privacy. It became a nightly practice that I would put on my pajamas in the closet, turn out the lights, and run and jump in my bed. Before anyone could see me!

Are you laughing yet?

And then, just as we were finishing the decor in the beach house, one of my favorite stores, Calico, reached out to see if I needed any window shades. I partnered with them and found the best solution for our primary bedroom.

I will be honest. I knew very little about window treatments and I was overwhelmed with the options to consider for the beach house. Thank goodness I had the experts at Calico guiding me along the way.

Did you know all the window treatments available at Calico can be customized to fit your windows perfectly? This ensures a professional and polished look.

The Three-Step Process

Calico offers a wide range of services to help you create the perfect window treatments for your home. Ordering shades at Calico is a simple process. I followed these three easy steps and loved that I had professionals helping me along the way.

Step #1 – Visit a Calico Store and Meet With a Design Consultant

The first step is to visit a Calico store. You can find a store near you by using the store locator on the Calico website.

Did I mention that their design consultation services are free? Yes, they are. Calico is a one-stop shop for Hunter Douglas roller shades and more.

Once you’re in the store, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with a design consultant. The consultant will help you determine what you need and offer recommendations to help you choose the right fabric, style, and size for your shades.

I met with Betsy at the Calico store in Pasadena and she helped me choose the perfect Hunter Douglas shades for our beach house based on my style, needs, and budget. Dave and I knew we wanted two shade options: privacy and light control (aka blackout shades). Betsy educated us about the different options and helped us select additional features and accessories, such as motorization or cordless operation.

Once I saw the options, I knew Hunter Douglas Vignette® Duolite shades were the best choice.

Why Did I Select Hunter Douglas Vignette® Duolite Shades?

Hunter Douglas Vignette® Duolite shades are a popular window treatment option that combines the classic look of a Roman shade with modern functionality. Duolite is a unique system that combines two shades in one, allowing you to control both light and privacy in your space. Vignette Duolite shades are the only Roman shades that combine a sheer or light-filtering fabric along with a room-darkening back panel on a single roller.

Vignette shades are perfect for anyone who wants a window treatment that provides privacy and light control. I wanted privacy and my husband wanted blackout shades, so they were the perfect solution.

Step #2 – Schedule a Measurement Appointment

After you’ve chosen your shades, the design consultant will schedule a measurement appointment. During this appointment, a professional installer will measure your windows to ensure a perfect fit.

Keith from Calico came out to the beach house and measured all of the windows for the shades. He explained the depth we needed for the vignette shades and also figured out the best way to install the shades at the corner windows.

After measuring, Keith gave everything to our Design consultant Betsy. We knew we wanted motorization, with both a remote and the app on our phones. This is especially useful for hard-to-reach windows or for anyone who wants to eliminate cords. It would allow anyone visiting our home without us to use the remote to control the shades.

Once we made our decisions, Betsy emailed the quote which included installation, and the Hunter Douglas vignette shades were ordered. They arrived about five weeks later.

Step #3 – Installation of the Blinds

The last step was to have our shades delivered and installed by a professional installer. It was great to see Keith again and he made sure the shades were securely mounted, installed, and operating correctly. He also programmed and demonstrated how to use the remote. I love the remote as I can control all of the shades at once or individually. Keith also helped set up the app on my phone so I can control the shades remotely too.

Hunter Douglas PowerView Automation allows you to schedule your window treatments to open and close when you want them. Additional benefits include added convenience, increased privacy, better energy, and enhanced security.

I can’t even begin to express how much we love our shades! We enjoy our bedroom when the blinds are open, with the light shade, and with the blackout blinds.

  1. BEAUTIFUL! Your windows are gorgeous and I always like the openness of windows without window coverings, but these shades still do the windows justice. Love that you went with the remote!

  2. I second Hunter Douglas wholeheartedly! We have 30-year-old Duettes at our full-time home and after meeting with several companies for a cabin remodel, there was no doubt we were going with HD. They know how to get around any “obstacle” and their customer service is the best. Window coverings are a major investment and HD is worth every penny. These are not your parent’s blinds!!!

  3. Great choice! We bought our house with existing Hunter Douglas shades that are now nearly twenty years old…they’re in great shape mechanically but need a refresh. Thinking about getting the motorized version to replace them.
Question: are those chairs by the window recliners?
