One of My Greatest Accomplishments – The Waco Fixer Upper Home Remodel
Today I am sharing one of my greatest accomplishments. I am so proud of the renovation from a few years ago of our Waco Fixer Upper home.
In the last three years, one of the things I am most proud of is the remodel of our Waco Fixer Upper Airbnb. I have always wanted to do a project like this and it was a dream of mine. Can I just say that I loved the process even though we certainly had our successes and failures and it took a lot longer than I expected. But I love how our Waco fixer upper home looks now.
This is one of our three fixer upper bedrooms. I cannot believe how different this looks. Wait until you see the “before” below.
We have two bathrooms in the home and this is the main one.
I thought the best way to take a look back at the Waco home remodel is to look at Before and After photos. The change to the home is quite dramatic and I can’t even believe everything we accomplished when I look at the photos.
The Waco Fixer Upper Home
We bought this small fixer upper home on a one-half-acre lot in Waco, Tx. in the fall of 2018 and started renovations in late 2018. We bought the home to restore it and rent it out as an Airbnb. It took almost a year to finish the remodel of our home and we now list it as a short term rental on Airbnb and VRBO.
Exterior
The home was built in 1912 and was in really bad shape. There were animal stains on the floor, rats running around and a smell that you would not believe. Everything had to be replaced. And I mean absolutely everything. The photo above is what it looked like the day we bought it,
The Before photo of the front of the home clearly shows that the front roof was sagging. It’s not surprising since the only thing holding it up was some decorative ironwork!
I was determined to add a wrap-around porch to the house. Unfortunately, the only way to do that was to add an entirely new roof. The roof was definitely a “change order” but well worth it as the exterior of the house looks so different now!
Here is the “after” photo of the exterior of our home.
We decided to add an addition to the back of the home which includes half of the kitchen, the laundry room, and the master bedroom and bath. We added a lot of square footage to the home, especially if you include the wrap around porch.
When I designed the floor plan, I wanted to create a large living area that would be great for groups of women and large families so I moved the living room, dining room, and kitchen to the left side of the home. And the bedrooms were all relocated on the right side of the home.
The plans were drawn by my sister-in-law, Sandy Saeta. She saved me as she did all of the CAD drawings, helped me with every construction question, and drew every room for me. She saved me from a lot of heartaches and from making some pretty major mistakes! If you are considering a remodel and looking for someone to draw up plans, you should contact my sister-in-law Sandy at Sandy McDaniel Designs.
This is what the living room and dining area look like now. The new furniture is from Overstock. I purchased all of the vintage pieces at the Round Top Antique show.
This is a peek at what the living room used to look like. I don’t really have much to say about this.
The front bedroom now looks like this. All of the furnishings are from Bed Bath and Beyond.
And here is the before photo of the bedroom. The floors look good because there is a plastic liner on top and I should probably mention the glass windows in this room were plastic. I am not kidding.
I mentioned that I really wanted a wrap-around porch. Look how great this new porch is!
This is what the house looked like without the porch.
Here is the porch during construction. The huge oak tree is my favorite thing about our lot and I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful the porch is overlooking that tree.
I have always felt the kitchen is the heart of any home and our Waco home is no exception. I absolutely love how it turned out. A lot of people have mentioned how much this kitchen reminds them of our kitchen in our Pasadena home. I think they are all right!
The cabinets are from Semi Handmade, the appliances are from ZLINE, the countertops are from Hanstone Quartz and the accessories and small appliances are from Bed Bath and Beyond. The hanging lights are from Hudson Valley Lighting.
This is the before photo and shows where we added the kitchen extension. Would you believe I found matching vintage floors and ceilings on facebook? They were in the Marketplace.
Here is a view of the dining room and living room.
And this is where the dining room was originally located.
This was a fun project and to be honest it was difficult at times but it was definitely one of my greatest accomplishments. If you would like to stay in our home in Waco, you can find out all of the details here.
