Choose Your Color Palette for Your Summer Decor

The first thing you need to do is decide on a color palette. I love the very neutral color palette in our home this summer so I am continuing with taupe and cream in our family room.

Don’t laugh but I used this vintage purse for my color inspiration! I bought it at a flea market many years ago and the colors in the purse are just amazing.

I know what you are thinking. Who uses a vintage purse for color inspiration for an entire room?

Apparently, that would be me. Hehe.

Introduce a Splash of Color

One of the easiest ways to revitalize your family room for summer is by introducing a bit of color. I am going very neutral in our home this summer but I wanted to add a pop of color to brighten up this very gloomy summer we have had so far.

I already own white slipcovers so I never need to worry about keeping things neutral. Our rug is light and the art is mostly found on our Frame TV which is very simple to change!

So, I am sure you have figured out the color I chose to liven up our family room.

A muted and light orange. Just like you see in the vintage purse!

That said, there still are a few pops of brighter orange since the only salad plates I could find were quite bright. But I love them!

I added colorful throw pillows, and blankets to bring a sense of joy and playfulness to the space. If you want to add a lot of vibrant color to your home then you should! You might choose shades that resonate with the season, such as citrus hues, ocean blues, or tropical prints, to evoke the spirit of summer.

Shop Your Own Home

There is no doubt that there are plenty of items in your home that you can use for your summer refresh. They might be hiding in an attic, in the back of a closet, or in a guest bedroom upstairs.

Once you have your color palette take about an hour to shop your own home. Not only will this save you money but reusing items brings a lot of enjoyment!

So what did I grab for this refresh from our home?

In the sitting area, I grabbed pillow covers, baskets, vases, peach florals, and a throw.

On the table I used my Spode Delamere plates, woven placemats, flatware, copper chargers, Maison d’ Hermine cloth napkins, square copper trays, brass glass display box, wood scalloped white wash dish, and Sullivan’s vase.

And don’t just shop your home once. After you have styled it a bit, go back to shopping in your home and look for items that you need to finish the room.

Find a Few New Items for the Room

I like to add just a few new items to a room when I style for a new season. For our family room, I knew I wanted to add a muted orange highlight so I bought salad plates, amber glasses, and faux hydrangeas. I spent a total of $72.00 on Amazon which was just under my budget.

Embrace Light and Airiness

One of the things I love most about summer is all of the sunlight! To infuse your family room with the sense of summer, start by maximizing natural light. Remove heavy drapes and opt for sheer curtains or blinds that allow sunlight to stream in. If privacy isn’t a concern, consider going curtain-free for a lighter, airier ambiance. I did that a few years ago and I love that there aren’t any drapes on our entire first floor.

The light in our home in the summertime is just magnificent.

You can also arrange furniture to maximize views and natural light, and strategically place mirrors to reflect and amplify the natural brightness.

A few years ago I completely changed the configuration of our family room to allow for better light in the seating area. Can you believe the difference?

When I refreshed our living room this summer, I added two reading chairs in front of a large French door. The light makes the sitting area perfect for reading and even napping!

Bring Nature Indoors

Nothing says summer like the beauty of nature. Embrace the season by incorporating natural elements into your family room decor. Consider displaying a vase of fresh flowers, placing potted plants strategically around the room, hanging a wreath on a door, or even adding faux flowers that will last the entire season. The presence of nature indoors not only adds visual appeal but also promotes a sense of calm and serenity.

Lighten Up with Slipcovers

If your family room furniture feels heavy or outdated, consider giving it a fresh look with slipcovers. Light-colored slipcovers made of breathable fabrics like linen or cotton can instantly transform the space into a cool and inviting summer haven. Experiment with patterns or opt for a neutral color palette, allowing the slipcovers to blend seamlessly with the rest of your summer-themed decor.

Over the last few years, I upgrades all of our chairs and sofas to slipcovers. They are all cotton and light and I love that they are so easy to take care of.

Integrate Coastal Accents

Something I did at our beach house was bring a touch of coastal charm to your family room. You might want to incorporate nautical or beach-themed accents.

How can you do that?

Hang artwork featuring seashells or marine life, display woven baskets or rope decor, or even arrange a collection of driftwood pieces on a side table. These subtle nods to the coast will instantly infuse your space with a seaside atmosphere.

By implementing these tips and ideas, you can transform your family room into a refreshing summer retreat. From maximizing natural light and embracing vibrant colors to bringing nature indoors and incorporating coastal accents, each step contributes to creating a space that exudes the spirit of the season. So, let the warmth and energy of summer guide your design choices, and enjoy a family room that invites relaxation, rejuvenation, and memorable moments
