How to Make a Pine Cone Wreath
I love making wreaths, especially for winter. Today I am sharing how to make a pine cone wreath that was fun to make.
Last Spring I made my first pine cone wreath. I made it blind, meaning I didn’t know what I was doing, and it took me a while to figure out how to cut the darn pine cones. This time around I figured it out!
I love the pink pine cone wreath I made last Spring and it’s hanging in my kitchen right now.
Today I have joined seven very talented bloggers to share a winter DIY project. I made a white winter wreath from pine cones. Be sure to scroll down to the bottom to see all of their amazing DIYs.
How awesome is this white oval pine cone wreath that I made this week? There are so many places in our home where it can hang.
I do like my new wreath hanging in our dining room.
This vintage shutter is from Debra Hall Lifestyle.
I love the textures in this photo. I just realized this wreath will be in style year round!

What You Need to Make This Craft
- Grape vine wreath – oval or round
- pine cones – 2 dozen
- shears/clippers
- glue gun
- fresh or faux eucalyptus
- acrylic paint – beige, white, tan

I wasn’t able to make this wreath in my craft room because on the same day I was cleaning and organizing my craft room for the blog post this week!
So I covered our kitchen island with newspaper and made it in the kitchen.
The hardest part to making this wreath is cutting the pine cones. I found some really good shears that allow you to cut them a bit easier.
Each pine cone should net you two pine cone “flowers”. The larger flowers are made by cutting a piece off the bottom. I like to count up about three rows of cone scales, and then I use the cutters to cut through the center. You might need to cut around the center. Which means cut and twist. And cut and twist more.
Then you can cut off a top piece for a smaller flower.
This is what they look like. All of the flowers shown here are shown from the top side of the pine cone.
Here is a close up of one of my flowers. I didn’t worry too much about cutting around the center.
Occasionally (quite often) when you are cutting the pinecones, the pieces may break into pieces. No worries!
All you need to do is glue the broken pieces together. See how great the flower looks glued back together!
Once you have enough flowers then it’s time to paint them. (I used 30.) Pick any palette you want. I chose winter white.
I don’t like painting all of the flowers the same color so I mixed the white and brown so that I had three slightly different shades of off-white.
If you look closely you can see how these flowers are all shades of off-white.
I love seeing the painted pine cones. I liked leaving the centers unpainted.
I like adding some greens to the grapevine wreath before I add the pine cones. I bought some eucalyptus for this project, put them in my car, and forgot about them.
Since we live in Southern California, and it’s warm, the eucalyptus dried quite perfectly in the trunk of my car. You can use fresh eucalyptus but you might want to dry it in your car first. Haha. Otherwise faux works great too.
The next step is to glue the pinecones on top of the eucalyptus (with a glue gun). Be sure to glue the pine cones to the wreath and not the eucalyptus.
I am so excited how this turned out. I love it.

Aren’t the pinecone flowers so beautiful Ashley? Who knew!
I always think of you when I collect pine cones in the woods! I love your wreath. It is so pretty with the eucalyptus!
Oh my gosh Janine, I love that! Thank you, so much!
Love the wreath! What type of shears did you purchase? The link for the shears in the picture above takes you to pine cones.
Hi Gay, I’m so glad you reached out abut the link to the shears. Here you go! https://amzn.to/3iD9Dm3 Let me know if you make this wreath and how it turns out! Have a great weekend!
Your car is the best drying place for hydrangeas also. At end of summer I put bunches in my car and in a few hours they were dry ,easiest method I’ve ever used.
I love it Jo! Thanks for the tip. I am so glad that you reached out to me. Have a great weekend!
Love the wreath. I notice your stove is identical to mine. I’ve had mine for 18 years and still think it’s wonderful. I do a lot of canning and a four burner stove just didn’t cut it. The big oven is fabulous for turning out cookies in large amounts in a short time.
That’s so funny Joyce! We got this stove when we remodled the kitchen in 2000 and I still love it! This stove can definitely handle turning out large amounts of food. Having raised three boys, cooking for my Christmas party and entertaining, I have definitely put this stove through the paces! Thank you for reaching out and have a great weekend!
That pink wreath is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! Oh I want that!!!
Wow Nancy, thank you so much! I appreciate that you reached out. Happy Friday to you!

Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing it! I am loving this wreath so much. Have a great weekend!
Hi, Leslie, I have a question? Did you post how to do origami valentines? I bought the materials and now I can’t find the instructions.😕
Thank you for reaching out Miranda! The DIY for the origami valentines is in my Sunday Morning post from last week (1.17.21, volume 3). It’s a Martha Stewart craft that I shared. You can either search the blog for Sunday Morning Coffee, or click here https://www.marthastewart.com/1553562/origami-hearts. Let me know how they turn out!
Hi Leslie, I made the Heart Valentine pillow cover and it turned out really cute, so I’ve bought everything for the pink pine cone wreath and I cannot cut the pine cones, so hard!! Any other suggestions, I’d appreciate it. Thanks for all your great blogs!!
In the bedroom closet organization blog I saw a sitting area- can you tell me about the chairs?
I love this wreath! I was going to ask you last week where you bought the wreath above your stove. I thought maybe it was made from zinnias, but now I know that is made from pinecones.
I am looking forward to making my own pinecone wreath soon!
Oh I hope you do Pam. Both the pink and the white one are two of my favorites I have ever made. Let me know if you make yours and how it turns out!
I love your pink wreath but the white one is lovely too……..I’m still having a hard time cutting the pinecones in 1/2…i’m still looking for the perfect too, neither my scissors or small pruners work well.
thanks,
Thank you Cheryl for reaching out. I had the same problem until I found the shears that I linked in the post. The shears made it much easier. Let me know if you get a pair and if they work better for you!
I gotta tell you- I thought I would make the pink pinecone wreath but I didn’t Love there colors. Just the idea. So I went to my emails thinking I would find a post if yours and just have to search your website. Well low and behold you had a link in that email to that wreath. I click on it and find the white pinecone wreath that I LOVE and when I check the date you had posted urt on my birthday, January 21!!!! LOL i think it’s meant to be 😜 wish me luck!! I’m gonna make it with my special needs daughter. She loves to paint
I tried it! I’m going to make another in whiter shades. I used brown, tan, and off-white in the one I just finished. These are gorgeous! A pink one is in my future, as long as I can keep finding pinecones
Thanks Kathy!
