Summer Beach House Update

|

It is supposed to be 96 degrees here today, so I am calling this post my Summer Beach House update. I hope you like it.

Whether we are ready or not, summer has arrived in Southern California. And just so you know, I am just thrilled! Has warmer summer weather arrived where you are?

Summer Beach House Exterior Update

We have made so much progress! The exterior of the front of our home looks completely different and you can see how it is starting to look like a more modern farmhouse feel.

I had never shared a photo of the front of our beach home before we started this remodel. I just didn’t like the look and I knew eventually we would begin the remodel. What I didn’t know is that the city of Ventura permit approval process would take so long!

I have spent a lot of time the past few weeks working on windows for the home and I can’t wait to share the process with you. It has been amazing.

I am not sure if I am most excited about the front of our summer beach house or the new third-floor deck.

They finished adding the floor and have started building the sides of the deck. Part of the sides will be wood and plaster ad then we will have glass. The glass is great for the views and for wind protection. I think is going to be our new favorite room at the beach house.

Summer Beach House Living:Family Room Update

This is the main living area of our summer beach house. I took this photo two days ago and then I looked at the camera in the house yesterday.

So this is actually what it looks like now.

This photo is a bit off because it’s taken from the security camera and it is a bit distorted. But as you can see, we have plywood on the outside of the house!

The window in our family room is so much larger. We will have an amazing picture window here. It’s going to be wonderful.

Summer Beach House Kitchen Space Update

So what do you think of our kitchen?

It doesn’t look like much but soon it will have cabinets like this and I think it’s going to be amazing. I am going with open shelving instead of upper cabinets since this is our second home and I don’t need as much storage.

The primary bedroom is coming along. We have some big windows to install here.

I cannot believe how much progress they have made in just two weeks!

We also made a lot of progress on the stairs to the third-floor deck.

A lot of the homes in our area have external staircases to the decks. I wanted an internal staircase so that we could access it easily and hopefully entertain a lot up there too. The photo on the right has a view of the step down to our primary bedroom.

Thoughts About the Summer Beach House Update

I think the thing that surprises me most about this remodel is that our home does not feel anything like it did before. It turns out we have touched almost every single room and well, it feels very different.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad thing. I love everything we have done to make this home better suited for our family but I guess I am just surprised that it doesn’t feel anything like it did before.

For a while, I was worried the kids might not be okay with all of the changes. Every time I visit the house to see the progress, I face time each of the boys and show them the update. So they certainly are aware of what it looks like.

They will be in town this weekend and next, so I hope we can all get up there and see it together. I have my fingers crossed that they will like it as much as their parents do!

Summer Beach House Living Area Update

I do know the boys will be happy with this raised ceiling. And I wasn’t kidding when I said they each hit their heads on the ceiling on the left side of this room. You can see through the walls to see the old pitch on the roof. I love that it is now almost three feet taller!

  1. It is going to be gorgeous. There is nothing like living on the water. I miss it terribly. Just wondering where this is…I pop in and out of here but must have missed the location. You are going to love it…and there is nothing like a raised roof after having a lower slanted one! Hugs-Diana

  2. nice! but I laughed out loud at ‘modern farmhouse feel’ , at the beach?!
is there no other style, lol.

  3. I’m loving all your choices for light and window placement bringing in the view! Having raised our kids near there, it’s fun to see an area so familiar Fond memories of a really spectacular place. Looking forward to following your design choices! We’re grateful to be close to the beach in the LowCountry of So. Carolina so we don’t feel too homesick for coastal SoCal. Im sure you’ll never want to leave when you’re done.

  4. Leslie,
I love the sound of the ocean waves! You are going to enjoy all the changes with your beautiful family. Can’t wait to see the finished project!

  5. Leslie it’s gonna be gorgeous when it’s done I’m excited to see the outcome!!. Lol but here’s my BUTT. The room that’s over the garage I believe it’s your bedroom with the 2 big picture windows looking towards the ocean. Why didn’t you make that the main living room? A view at night or in the day with those 2 big picture windows entertaining people and especially at Christmas with a fireplace and the Christmas tree and the ocean I think the ambience would have been beautiful. I think you’ve wasted that room putting it into a bedroom because lets face it we only use the bedroom to sleep and you’re not even gonna see the ocean cause it’s gonna be dark. Just was wondering.

    1. I can see why you would think that. But I want a living area and kitchen area that are together and there was no way to make that happen with the current design of the home. Plus, we ave a gorgeous view in the living room too!. Since the deck has the same view as our bedroom I think we will get to enjoy it either way.

  6. How could anyone NOT love this? It’s going to be too amazing for words. I am so enjoying watching your progress on this project. You have definitely thought of everything for your sweet family, which I’m sure they will appreciate! Keep posting and keep sharing—you are doing a great job!

    1. You are so kind Robin. Thank you. We have been planning this for many years so it’s fun to have it finally happening. We are very excited.

  7. Wow!! This will be a total transformation once completed!! So happy you are opening up the window spaces to enjoy that incredible view!! As well as adding the upper roof top space!! I’m sure your sons will fall in love with it!! I can’t wait to see all your design choices once construction is completed!! I have a feeling you will be spending much more time at the beach house!!! Amazing!!

  8. Love the look of your beach house. You will really enjoy many days and evenings there enjoying the sun and waves. God Bless you and your family.

  9. It is fabulous! I love how you were able to work those fabulous views around the neighbor house. Great job! It is a special spot.

  10. I’m sure it will be gorgeous when finished. You choose whatever style you prefer. It doesn’t have to be a seaside theme.
