New Fall Decor in the Family Room
Fall is here, and you know what that means—I’ve been busy giving our family room a seasonal refresh. I love that I mainly used pre-owned fall decor in the family room.
Before you start saying fall isn’t officially here, it is for me. It’s my job to share decor as early as possible. This year, I leaned into a softer, more calming fall color palette. I chose sage green as my foundation and layered in warm accents of gold and orange. The result is cozy, fresh, and elegant all at once.

How I Decorated Our Family Room for Fall with Sage Green, Gold, and Orange

I love the way the family room feels now—inviting, comfortable, and perfectly seasonal without being overwhelming. I thought I’d take you through every step of the process so you can see how a few simple changes made such a big difference.
Starting with a New Fall Color Palette

The very first step in my decorating process was deciding on the color palette. I’ve used a lot of neutral tones in this room in the past, but I really wanted to bring in a color that feels grounded and calming. Sage green was the natural choice. It has that earthy quality I love, but it still feels modern and fresh.

To keep the room from feeling too monochromatic, I decided to accent the sage with warm golds and pops of orange. These colors add just the right amount of contrast, creating warmth and visual interest while still blending beautifully with the softer green tones.
Choosing your palette first is so important because it becomes your guide for everything else—pillows, art, table accents, dishes, and even flowers.

Updating the Pillows for Fall

Pillows are hands down my favorite way to change up a room for the seasons. They’re inexpensive, easy to swap out, and they instantly bring new color and texture into a space.

For fall, I replaced our summer pillow covers with ones in sage green and soft neutral tones. I mixed in a couple of warm gold accents and even a subtle orange pillow for balance. I love mixing textures too—smooth linen next to chunky knits or embroidered patterns. The variety gives the sofa a layered, cozy feel without being too busy.
This one change made such an immediate impact that I always recommend starting with pillows when transitioning your room from one season to another.
Adding Sage Vintage Accents

One of my favorite things about decorating is incorporating vintage finds. They add history and charm that you just can’t get from store-bought items alone. This fall, I went shopping in my own home and pulled out a few of my vintage sage-colored treasures.
On the coffee table, I styled a sage green mercury glass vase that I’ve had for years. On the end tables, I added small touches like vintage green jars and a beautiful sage and white pitcher. These little accents tie everything together and echo the color palette in subtle, sophisticated ways.
Vintage pieces also tell a story, and I love how they make the room feel collected over time rather than decorated in a single afternoon.
Changing the Art on the Frame TV

Another trick I use every season is changing the art on our Frame TV. It’s such a simple way to update the entire feel of the room. This time, I chose artwork that featured muted greens and soft autumn tones of gold and orange.
The artwork creates a beautiful focal point and reinforces the palette across the room. I often get questions about the Frame TV, and honestly, I love it. Being able to swap out art for every season (or even every mood!) is such a fun feature, and it always gets compliments from guests.
Setting the Dining Area with Sage and Gold

While the family room was my primary focus, the dining area is right next to it, so I wanted the two spaces to feel connected. To bring in the palette, I set the table with sage green plates and added gold flatware and napkin rings for a touch of elegance.

The combination of sage and gold feels rich and festive without being over the top. I layered neutral placemats underneath to ground the table and let the colors shine. The result is a dining space that feels perfectly tied to the family room but still special on its own.

I love having the dining table styled for the season—it’s a little detail that makes everyday meals feel celebratory.
Faux Fall Flowers for the Finishing Touch

No room feels complete to me without flowers. For fall, I leaned into faux arrangements. They’re long-lasting, versatile, and these days, faux florals look incredibly realistic.
I arranged eucalyptus stems, faux safflowers, and muted gold blossoms in vases throughout the room. The key with faux flowers is to mix textures and tones, just as you would with real arrangements. Some soft greens, a pop of warm orange, and touches of cream or gold create a natural, balanced look.
Adding flowers instantly brought life to the room and tied all the other elements together.
Creating a Cohesive Look

What I love most about this year’s fall family room is how cohesive everything feels. The sage green is the star, but the accents of gold and orange add warmth and keep the space from feeling flat. Every choice, from the pillows to the vintage accents to the artwork, works together to create a harmonious look.
When you’re decorating, think about your space as a whole. You want your eye to flow easily from one area to another. The family room, dining room, and even small corners like the coffee table and end tables all share the same palette, so the entire space feels intentional and unified.
Why Sage Green Works for Fall

You might be wondering why sage green, a color that often feels more spring-like, works so well for fall. The answer is that sage is a muted, earthy tone—it doesn’t scream summer the way a bright green would. Instead, it feels calming and grounded, just like the season itself.
When paired with warm accents, sage green becomes the perfect backdrop for fall. The gold adds elegance, the orange adds warmth, and together they create a space that feels seasonal without relying on the more expected reds and browns.
If you’re looking to try something new this year, I can’t recommend sage green enough.
Tips for Decorating Your Own Family Room for Fall
If you’re inspired to try this in your own home, here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Pick a palette first. Choose one primary color and two or three accent colors. This will make all your decisions easier.
- Start with textiles. Swap pillow covers, throws, and even rugs to bring in your colors.
- Use what you already have. Browse your home for vintage or seasonal items that match your style.
- Update artwork. Whether it’s on a Frame TV or a favorite wall, changing art is a quick and impactful update.
- Don’t forget the table. Dining areas are often visible from the family room, so tie the two spaces together.
- Add flowers. Faux or real, they bring life and texture to the room.
A Space Ready for Fall

Walking into our family room now makes me so happy. It feels warm and welcoming, ready for cozy evenings with a good book or family gatherings around the table. The sage, gold, and orange palette has completely transformed the space, proving that sometimes, a few thoughtful changes can make the most significant difference.
I hope this inspires you to think about how you can refresh your own family room for fall. Whether it’s a complete makeover or just a few pillow swaps and flowers, creating a seasonal space is such a fun way to celebrate the beauty of autumn.
