My Latest Project

You might remember I had to replace my 25-year-old DCS stove last month. It had stopped working, and after 25 years, we had no choice but to buy a new one. So, I selected an 8-burner Viking stove.

When my brand-new Viking stove arrived, I couldn’t wait to see how it would transform my kitchen and cooking. But as life often goes, things didn’t turn out as planned.

I neglected to notice the new Viking stove didn’t have the back panel my DCS stove had. This difference left me with a whopping 10-inch gap behind the stove—certainly not the sleek look I’d envisioned!

Initially, I was puzzled and a bit disappointed. However, as a firm believer that challenges can inspire the most delightful solutions, I quickly began brainstorming how to make the best of the situation. And that’s when the idea struck: why not use this unexpected space to create something beautiful and practical?

I called in a talented carpenter to help me envision a solution, and together, we designed a custom-built shelf that now perfectly fills that 10-inch gap. This wasn’t just any shelf—it’s a thoughtfully designed storage space that elegantly solves my cooking needs, making my kitchen even more functional and stylish than before.

This new shelf has genuinely become the unsung hero of my cooking area. It’s perfectly sized to hold all my frequently used utensils, spices, and essential cooking items within easy reach. Now, instead of fumbling around drawers or cabinets, everything I need is effortlessly accessible right behind the stove. It’s remarkable how such a minor adjustment has made cooking more efficient and enjoyable.

Of course, I couldn’t resist styling this new space to celebrate the spring season. To bring the freshness of spring into my kitchen, I decorated the shelf with a small vase of bright flowers and charming ceramic jars. I might even add a few favorite cookbooks with colorful covers.

What started as an inconvenience quickly became one of my favorite kitchen improvements. Not only does the shelf offer unmatched practicality, but it also provides an opportunity to infuse seasonal style into my everyday cooking routine. It’s a testament to how creativity can turn any unexpected obstacle into something wonderfully helpful and visually appealing.
