It’s Time to Plant a Backyard Garden
I am so happy that I finally finished replanting my favorite garden. I can’t wait to share with you tips on how to plant a backyard garden.
Two weekends ago I spent a lot of time in our backyard. I was determined to replant my backyard garden and I ended up only having to do a “refresh”.
There were a lot of plants that looked pretty good and were worth saving. The only problem is that it was super hot (as in the low nineties) and it was really hard work!
I took out a ton of overgrown plants, cut back some others, and planted some really fun plants to add more color in what I call “the Carriage House Garden”.
How to Refresh Your Backyard Garden

Picture yourself stepping outside into your own little oasis—a vibrant, thriving backyard garden. Creating a backyard garden is a rewarding and fulfilling experience that allows you to connect with nature and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Steps to Refreshing Your Backyard Garden
Step #1 Plan Your Garden Refresh
Before you start planting, take some time to plan your garden. Consider the available space, sunlight exposure, and the types of plants you want to grow. Sketch out a simple layout of your garden, taking into account any existing features like trees or structures. Think about the purpose of your garden—whether you want it to be a vegetable garden, a flower garden, or a combination of both. Planning ahead will save you time and effort in the long run.
Step #2 Prepare the Soil
Healthy soil is the foundation for a successful garden. Start by removing any weeds or debris from the area. Loosen the soil with a garden fork or tiller, breaking up any clumps and removing rocks. Add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve the soil’s fertility and structure. Consider getting a soil test done to determine if any additional amendments, like lime or sulfur, are needed to achieve the ideal pH balance.
Step #3 Choose Your Plants
Select plants that are well-suited for your climate, soil type, and available sunlight. Consider the needs and preferences of each plant, including their size, watering requirements, and growth habits. Determine whether you want to start with seeds or young plants from a nursery. Research the specific planting and care instructions for each plant, so you can provide them with the optimal conditions they need to thrive.
Step #4 Planting and Caring for Your Garden
Follow the planting instructions for each plant, making sure to space them appropriately to allow for growth. Water the newly planted garden thoroughly, and provide regular watering as needed. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a more consistent soil temperature. Stay vigilant against pests and diseases, and use organic pest control methods whenever possible.
Step #5 Maintain and Enjoy
Regular maintenance is crucial for the long-term success of your backyard garden. Remove weeds regularly, water consistently, and provide support for plants that need it, such as stakes for tall flowers or trellises for climbing vegetables. Take time to appreciate the beauty of your garden, and don’t forget to harvest and enjoy the fruits, vegetables, and flowers it produces.
I finished our garden and this is how our garden looks now. I love the look of an English garden and like a garden that looks full and loose and not too perfect or organized.

I loved planting the garden and the replanted pots look amazing.
The previous pots were almost dead, which is really embarrassing that I let them look that bad. You can see how bad they were in the gallery below.
This is a side view of my backyard garden. That’s The Carriage House right behind the garden.
The roses above the window will be in bloom in a few weeks. They “burst” all at once and they really are gorgeous. In this photo, you can see I planted purple Aster and Salvia, and Delphinium.
See the gorgeous pink flower on the right? That is a Dahlia! Isn’t it gorgeous? The white bordered impatients are a fun addition too.

Flowers to Plant a Backyard Garden
I bought my flowers for my backyard garden at The Home Depot. I like to buy my flowers in different heights and sizes so that the flowers don’t look too similar in my garden.
How to Plant Hanging Baskets
I bought Begonias and Petunias and replanted these baskets in about five minutes. I linked the hanging pots below and just love how they turned out. (Yes, the second photo is how my planters looked the day before. They were so bad!)

Your refresh was just right!! Love those hanging baskets on the shepherds hooks….reminded me that I have some hooks that I haven’t used since we had our kids’ weddings in our back yard. The begonias look very pretty in them and are perfect for hanging at eye level on your walkway! What time does Home Depot open?!?

It looks absolutely beautiful Leslie. I would love to step out into my back yard and see an oasis. We have a young Belgium Shepherd a ‘Tervuren’ and my son/daughter-in-law have a young Sheba Inu and they tear up the yard and dig, so I am thinking will have to wait another year. My herb garden looks great – it’s gated. My front yard looks great as does the back deck (as long as you don’t look over at the back yard). Have 2 black wrought iron planters on the deck which they tore the plants out of it, put in fake and they ate those as well. So, will save this post and try next year to have a somewhat beautiful back yard. But always enjoy the how to do it ….
