Mother’s Day is approaching quickly, and if you’re anything like me, you’re looking for something thoughtful, unique, and practical to gift to the special moms in your life. Cute tote bags are the best gift!

For those of you who want to go beyond the traditional bouquet or chocolates—I created cute tote bags that are special, personalized, and useful. The best part is that the personalization is super simple, and this might be my easiest DIY yet!

You Made that?

DIY Cute Tote Bags for Mother’s Day

A woman stands on a covered porch holding two large tote bags, with patio furniture and a garden visible in the background.

Not only are tote bags incredibly practical, but they can also become beautiful statement pieces with a few easy embellishments. They’re versatile enough for a day at the beach, a trip to the farmer’s market, running daily errands, or even heading to work. Plus, there’s just something extraordinary about receiving a handmade gift that’s both thoughtful and practical.

Today, I’m thrilled to share exactly how I transformed plain burlap tote bags into stylish and elegant accessories for Mother’s Day. I’m also sharing the details about a gorgeous Kraft Paper Tote Bag that I gifted myself (because, let’s face it—we all deserve a little something special sometimes!).

Choosing the Perfect Tote Bags

A rectangular jute tote bag with rope handles is placed next to a small woven straw clutch on a light wooden surface.

The starting point for this project was finding the perfect blank canvas. I wanted something neutral, spacious, and stylish enough to customize easily. After browsing, I decided on three large burlap tote bags with classic white handles. They’re durable, stylishly rustic, and, best of all, affordable at only $8.50 each.

Three burlap tote bags are displayed on a light-colored table. Two bags are decorated with fabric flowers, and one is decorated with a row of white buttons.

I ordered a charming straw clutch purse for a different option. I loved the natural texture of the straw, and with a little glam, it is perfectly suited for Mother’s Day.

When the bags arrived, I was impressed by their size and quality. They were even more spacious than I’d expected, with plenty of room for essentials, making them ideal for daily use. But as lovely as they were in their simplicity, I knew a few embellishments would elevate them into something truly special.

Gathering My Embellishments

Assorted craft materials on a light wooden surface, including faux pearls, seashells, white beads, and decorative fabric flowers in brown and beige tones arranged in groups.

To adorn my burlap bags, I chose embellishments that would highlight their natural textures while adding a touch of glam and sophistication. Here’s what I selected:

I found all of the tote bags and embellishments on Amazon. With everything laid out, I was ready to start decorating.

In case you are wondering, I also bought some shells but opted not to use them. Fortunately, I already know how to use them in another craft project.

Decorating the Burlap Tote Bags

The decorating process was easy and enjoyable, and the result was even better than I imagined.

First, I arranged the embellishments on the bags before attaching them permanently. I took my time experimenting with different layouts, eventually settling on a pattern that placed the burlap flowers at the top corners of the tote, accented by groups of mother-of-pearl beads and pearls.

I used hot glue to secure the burlap flowers. Hot glue is perfect for fabric crafts because it dries quickly, provides strong adhesion, and is easy to work with.

For the flat shell mother of pearl beads, which came with small pre-drilled holes, I opted to sew them securely onto the bags. Sewing these beads ensured they’d stay firmly in place, even with regular use. I even knotted them between each piece.

The embellishments added an extra dimension of elegance. They elevated the overall look of the tote, making it appear far more expensive and polished than an $8 tote bag would ever suggest!

Here are the finished totes!

Adding Detail to the Straw Clutch

Two glass jars with pearl bead bracelets and a woven clutch with two pearl bead necklaces are arranged on a light wooden surface.

Once the tote bags were complete, I turned my attention to the straw clutch. This clutch purse was already charming, but I wanted it to glam it up. I kept it simple and elegant, adding a cluster of large white and gold pearl beads to the clutch’s front flap.

Using hot glue again, I arranged two rows of white and gold pearls along the flap’s seams. This simple addition transformed a lovely straw purse into a stylish accessory perfect for summer gatherings or a casual night out.

A Personalized Touch

Another great option I considered but didn’t end up doing for these particular bags is adding personalized embroidery. Embroidering the word “Mom,” initials, or even full names on the front of the bags is an excellent way to add a personal, heartfelt touch. If you have an embroidery machine or just a simple needle and thread, you can easily elevate your gift further with personalization.

The Final Result – Stylish, Practical, and Thoughtful

Two brown burlap tote bags with white handles, decorated with fabric flowers in neutral tones, are placed on a light-colored table indoors.

I have to say—I was truly blown away by how beautiful these bags turned out. I couldn’t believe the transformation when I stepped back and looked at the finished totes. They went from simple, understated burlap bags to chic and sophisticated accessories, perfect for any mom who appreciates style and practicality.

And the best part? The entire project was easy, quick, and extremely budget-friendly. It’s incredible how a few carefully chosen embellishments and just a bit of creativity can result in something that looks so luxurious and special.

Why Tote Bags Make the Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

Suppose you’re still deciding on a Mother’s Day gift. In that case, I highly recommend considering personalized tote bags like these. Tote bags are practical, helpful, and incredibly versatile, perfect for everything from beach days and errands to work and travel. When customized with thoughtful embellishments, they also become unique, one-of-a-kind treasures that will undoubtedly delight any recipient.

Of course, while shopping for others, finding something special for yourself is always fun. I chose the coffee-colored tote, but it’s available in 14 colors, ranging from neutrals to pastels and even bold shades.
