Beach House Renovations – Sunday Morning Coffee
Happy Sunday! We are at the beach house and only have a few more weeks before we start our big project. We have big plans for our beach house renovations and I can’t wait to share them with you.
Volume 23
Thanks for joining me for Sunday morning coffee. Today I am sharing my weekly thoughts about entertaining, decor, crafts, and recipes, and our plans for our beach house renovations.
I also want to wish all of the father’s out there a Happy Father’s Day!
A Little Bit About Me
I think I am addicted to projects.
It’s funny but I have always need a project in my life. I think it’s why I like crafts, entertaining, and remodeling so much.
I love having something to look forward to. But I also love living in the moment.
Perhaps I just like having a lot of things on my plate.
When I was younger I know I drove my mom crazy. I was always doing crafts and not one at a time. There was one summer when I was in junior high that I wanted to sew a new dress or outfit every single day. I was so focused on sewing that I use to take my sewing machine with me babysitting so I could make a new outfit after I put the kids to bed.
I remember making an afghan daisy quilt while I was sewing outfits and making jewelry with a soldering gun. At the same time.
It doesn’t seem like I have changed much. I love projects!
So what’s my next big project?
Our beach house.
Beach House Renovations
We are spending this weekend at our beach house in Ventura.
It’s likely one of our last weekends for a while up here because we are starting the renovations soon.
We bought this home almost eight years ago. I found the house and I remember Dave telling me, “Honey, I never knew we needed a beach house”.
What? Of course we did!
I call our beach house our “kid magnet”. It’s the place where we have already had so many memories made with our family. It’s where we spend holidays and summer weekends. Last summer we spent more days here in Ventura than we did at home!
Why Renovations?
We have thought long and hard about renovations at our beach house. But the truth is, we need more space.
You all know how much I love to cook and entertain. Here is our kitchen.
Don’t get me wrong, I love our kitchen. But it barely fits two people. And as much as I love to cook, I love cooking with my family. When the dishwasher is open, you almost have to climb over it. I am not kidding.
We need more living space. We are now a family of six and someday (yes someday!) we will have grandkids. (I think this is the part where I can mention again that both Matt and Michael are single. Just saying.)
We have three bedrooms and two bathrooms and it would be nice to have at least one more bedroom and one more bathroom. Ok, maybe two more bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Finally, the outside of our house is really bad. The design is awkward and the stucco is literally peeling off. Our neighbors have even made comments and I know they are happy that we are finally planning renovations to the inside and outside of our beach house.
The Beach House Renovations Idea
What do we specifically have planned for the remodel?
Let’s start with the front of the house. I have never shared the front of our beach house (on purpose) but here is the existing front elevation. The boxy-looking thing on top of the garage (with the vertical wood stripes) is literally a box that the previous owners added on top of the garage. It is an enclosed deck.
This is what the front elevation will look like when we are done with the renovations. Please note, the front door design in the drawings are existing and has since been updated to a more modern look.
Modern Farmhouse here we come!
As I mentioned, our family is growing and we need more space. We are opening up the living area, adding extra square footage to build a master suite, and adding an additional bedroom/office. We are adding two more bathrooms, and entirely remodeling the kitchen. We are expanding the kitchen and adding new cabinets, appliances, countertops, an island, a dining area, and a beverage bar.
Here are the before and after plans for each floor.
We are also raising the ceiling on the second floor. This is what it looks like currently and you can see that the ceiling drops on the left side about three feet! All of our boys (who are 6’7, 6’5, and 6’4) can’t walk to the window without hitting their heads. The window has such a beautiful view and I love that we are raising the height of the window.
We are also adding a third-floor deck and an internal staircase to access the third-floor deck which will have a fire pit, lounge area, dining area, bbq, and outdoor kitchen. The views from the deck are incredible.
We are also re-landscaping the front and back of the house and intend to add a deck in the back to create an entertaining area for large dining parties. Or a putting green. This should be an interesting decision-making process. As in me vs. the boys. Haha. I know I have no chance to win this vote. But I am ok with that.
So when do we start the renovations? We have been in plan check for almost six months and it looks like after this last revision we should be able to start in a few weeks.
We will be here for the 4th of July and then I will need to get everything in the house packed up and put in storage. I am not looking forward to that project.
Reflections on the Week
I had a wonderful and very creative week.
Speaking of renovations, we are still getting our house painted, and the scraping and sanding are driving all of us crazy. I think we are on week five. It’s worth it but this is what the front of our house looks like right now!
On Monday of last week, we selected the dinner guests for the Dinner with Friends I am hosting in October at our Waco home. We still have to confirm one last guest so one of you still might get an invitation. Once everyone is finalized I will share with you the list of who is attending. I am so excited!
This past week I shared some fun summer cocktail recipes, our new milk-painted coffee table, and Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream sandwiches. I also showed you how to make DIY flags, my favorite potluck recipes for a dinner party, and an amazing outdoor summer dinner party.
Which was your favorite?

Amazon Prime Day Starts Tomorrow!
I haven’t really given Amazon Prime Day the attention is deserves. Until now.
I work a lot with Amazon Home (you probably figured that out) and when they sent me the list of all of the items that were going to be offered on sale on Prime Day(s), I couldn’t believe it. There were over 30,000 items!
Amazon Prime Days are Monday, June 21st and Tuesday, June 22nd. Prime Day starts at midnight tonight PST.
Beginning at midnight tonight I will start sharing items that I think you will want to know about. The first one is an item that many of you asked about and it is $100 off! Since I will be sharing all day long for two days, I suggest you check back frequently on my stories because I will be sharing new items as they are offered on sale.
Did you know Amazon also has early Prime Day offers?
Click here to see what is already on sale for Early Prime Day deals. They have hundreds and hundreds of items already on sale such as air fryers, vacuums, blenders, bedding, and more. Then check back on my stories for the next two days as I share items as they are released.
I also wanted to mention that if you use my link to shop on Amazon I will earn a small commission, which helps me to be able to share my ideas with you every single day. Using my link does not cost you a penny more but it does help me!
So thank you.
