Valentine Table Decorations in the Carriage House

| |

I created this table with Valentine table decorations for a friend’s dinner I hosted in the Carriage House.

When I set a table, I go through the same process every time. I shop my home, pick up flowers at the grocery store, and start creating my table. I even made the heart-themed platemats to use for my Valentine table decorations.

Entertaining Friends and Family

Holiday tables are especially fun to create. For all of them, a built-in theme and a color guideline to work from. When setting a table, you do not need to be extravagant or expensive. My goal when setting a table for Valentine’s Day is to inspire my guests sitting around the table to feel special.

I want them to feel loved and to know much I care about them. As I am creating the Valentine table decorations I am thinking about our guests and what I can do to spoil them! Creating a special table, and cooking a meal for our family and friends, are one of my favorite things to do.

And that is why I love to entertain.

A Valentine’s Day theme is such an easy theme to work with when setting a table. There are so many options! You can set a table using just Valentine colors. Or you can set a table using hearts. You can transform an all-white table by adding Valentine-colored flowers. Or, if you are like me, I love to use all of the options!

How to Build a Collection of Plates (Without Spending a Fortune)!

One of my favorite ways to set a table is to mix and match the plates that I have collected. I did not set out to collect dinner and salad plates, it just kind of happened. My plate collection started by shopping at vintage flea markets and expanded to shopping on Amazon and at TJMaxx and HomeGoods. There are so many incredible places to find inexpensive dinner and salad plates, but those are my go-to favorite places to shop.

Early on, most dishes were sold in sets. They came with a dinner plate, a salad/dessert plate, and a bowl or a cup and saucer. So I never bought new plates, just plates I could find at the flea market. Now, you can buy just dinner plates or just salad plates and I love it.

Holidays are a perfect way to utilize all of the plates that I have collected. For Valentine table decorations, I can add a pop of pink or red to a plain white plate and the table is ready for Valentine’s Day.

Platemats

Valentine Paper Placemat

For this table, I used red beaded chargers that I had just used for Christmas and added a pink platemat that I made on my Cricut machine. I shared how to make the platemats and you can click here in case you missed that DIY! Lastly, I added my Rae Dunn heart-shaped plates and I love the look it created!

If you are confused and have never heard of a platemat don’t worry. I totally made up the name!

Arrangements Made From Grocery Store Flowers

Grocery store flowers are wonderful for creating Valentine table decorations. I bought roses in a few colors and white mums and some sweet small flower sprigs (I don’t know the name of this flower, but it’s just so cute) and created these spectacular arrangements. I made the arrangements smaller on purpose so that we could talk over the top of them and so that they didn’t block anyone’s view.

The flowers in this photo are repurposed tulips from earlier in the week and I staged them on the vintage cabinet next to the table. I love this simple touch.

We had a couples Valentine’s dinner with some of our dear friends. Being together around this beautiful table is a wonderful way to show the people in my life how much I care about them!

  2. Hello Leslie,
My suggestion on the Valentines menu is to include your crabcake recipe!!!!!!! I made them last year for the most romantic Valentine’s dinner for my wonderful husband and me. I think I told you how I set my table with beautiful decor and even spelled out the word love with a long string of beads across the table. It was the most beautiful Valentine’s Day I had ever had. Your crabcakes are so extra delicious. I made them big because it was our entre, I think you make smaller appitizer size for your large parties. Happy Valentine’s Day

  3. Hi Leslie,
I attempted to make your Valentine placemats with my Cricut, I purchased your design. It cut as two pieces not one complete placemat. Have you ever had that experience?

My most requested is McCall’s Refrigerator Potato Rolls – Feb 1985
    from McCall’s Cooking School Magazine #110, 25 Feb 1985 page 117

½ cup unseasoned warm mashed potato (1 potato)
1 ½ cups warm water (105 to 115F) – use water from which the potato was cooked
2 packages (2 tablespoons) active dry yeast (Traditional)
    ½ cup sugar
    1 tablespoon salt
    2 eggs
½ cup butter or margarine, softened
    6 ½ cups all-purpose flour
Melted butter or 1 egg, beaten with 2 tablespoons water

Prepare potato. Pour warm water into a large bowl. Rinse bowl in warm water first. Sprinkle yeast over water. Add sugar and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until dissolved with a wooden spoon. Let stand a few minutes – will bubble slightly. Add 2 eggs, soft butter, warm mashed potato, and 3 cups flour. With electric mixer beat at high speed until just smooth. Add another 2 cups flour and mix with a wooden spoon. Add remaining 1½ cups flour. Knead dough. Brush with melted butter. Cover with wax paper and clean towel. Let rise in fridge for 2 hours or until double in size. Remove from fridge and punch down.
COVER AND REFRIGERATE FOR UP TO 3 DAYS – but punch down once a day.
2 hours before serving. Remove from fridge. Shape. (I usually butter a muffin pan and pinch off small pieces of dough and put three balls into one greased muffin pan). Cover with a towel. Let rise in warm place until double in size – about 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 400F. Brush with butter or egg and water mixture. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden. Let rest a few minutes before serving.
Note: Before you put buns into oven, spritz oven with water. Close oven. Then spritz again and put buns in the oven. Use a spray bottle with clean water OR you can throw a handful of ice cubes into the bottom of the oven.
I saw Subway spritz their buns with water then sprinkle with herbs or cheese before they baked them. When I talked with the lady at Subway she said that was their secret.

    Serve with Garlic-Chive Whipped Butter
    1/2 cup salted butter, softened
    2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons Cheddar cheese, finely grated
2 tablespoons Monterey Jack cheese, finely grated
    1 tablespoons chives, minced
1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced
Mix all ingredients and using a hand held mixer, mix until creamy.

Cornish Hens stuffed with rice (when they come out of the oven all you do is place them on guest(s) plates and serve with Caesar Salad. The Potato Buns are then placed in oven for 10 minutes which gives you time to get the salad tossed.
