Festive Christmas Frozen Vodka

I love it when I can surprise our guests at our Christmas party. And every year my frozen vodka surprises someone! I love this technique and every year we use it to serve flavored vodka at our Christmas party.

First, let me share with you a little bit about the history of our annual holiday party. Thirty-two years ago when Dave and I were married, we hosted our first Christmas party. At that time we invited about forty people and I cooked all of the food. Fast forward thirty plus years, and we now invite over 200 people and I am still cooking all of the food.

Now I realize many of you who are reading this weren’t even born yet in 1982,  but trust me, in 1982 it was the most beautiful and creative book I had ever seen. One of my favorite ideas she had in the book was freezing vodka in milk cartons. And since her book was published 36 years ago, the idea is practically vintage, right?

No.

For the last thirty years, I have served the frozen vodka at our holiday party, exactly like Martha taught me in her book “Entertaining”. I am thrilled to be able to pass her idea on to you.

To start off with, you only need a few things. If you are smart you will buy milk cartons early and save them when they are empty. Usually, I forget to save them and end up buying the cheapest drink sold at the grocery store in a carton. Because I dump it out! Hence, that is why I am using Fruit Punch cartons.

how to make frozen vodka

First, cut the top portion off of the carton.

Next, insert the vodka bottle and add anything you want. I usually use Christmas greens, cranberries and/or a poinsettia plant

Fill with water all the way to the top of the carton. Make sure the vodka bottle is facing front in the carton. Place in the freezer overnight.

Peel off the carton when you are ready to use.frozen vodka 4frozen vodka 5

Place in a pan (because the ice will melt!) and add greens and candles for display.frozen vodka 6

When ready to serve, tie a napkin around the base for easier handling.

  1. I also purchased Martha Stewart’s first book, which I still have, as well as some of her early newsletters. I forgot about this entertaining gem so thank you for refreshing my memory. I am looking forward to your post about Christmas entertaining since I can’t fathom hosting 250 people! I wish I had a fraction of your energy!! Thanks for sharing!

  2. You know you can just throw a bag of cranberries in the freezer and use them anytime. We get them from the cranberry festival and use the food saver bags and they are good for over a year.

  3. I also purchased Martha’s book and have used this same technique. Sometimes I use this as a candle holder which is really great with the battery operated candles now!

I can’t wait for your recipe link. I loved your spreadsheet for your party prep.

  4. I can’t wait to try the crab cakes recipe as a surprise for my husband. He loves salmon patties and I’m sure he’d love these too! I laugh at how your party has multiplied exponentially. I remember stressing out making my first family gathering meal as a newlywed. Now I cook for 9+ on a regular basis. As my family has grown (7 kids, girlfriends, boyfriends, kid’s friends and then extended family), cooking for a large crowd on holidays is no longer an issue lol. I guess through years of practice, efficiencies are learned just like you. The hard part is cleaning the house through all the cooking to host the gathering. My daughter bought the farmhouse across the street and is restoring it @rosebudfarmandhomestead. She says if I cook, she’ll host (once she has the kitchen and some main rooms done) lol!

  5. I cracked up when you said “most of you weren’t even born” 😂😂😂
That is so true but these lovely ladies on IG never make me feel old. When I read their post I feel like I am their age..
Thanks for all of your ideas.. YOU ARE AWESOME!

  6. Even though I’m a subscriber, I cannot access your Christmas party recipes. A password is required, but nothing happens once I enter mine. Can you please advise me what I need to do?
    Thank you and merry Christmas.

  7. So happy I found you on Instagram… Could you please email me your recipe for your fig Gorgonzola Pear many grilled cheese sandwiches? Still trying to figure out how to get all your recipes for your party… I’m sure it’s on there😀 thank you very much and keep up the great work you are amazing ❤️ Marcia

  8. Could you purchase juice that you like in cartons and save it to make mamosas? Just pour the juice into a pitcher for later maybe? Love this idea and remember it from way back but had forgotten. Thanks for the reminder!

  9. I have that same Martha Stewart book and it changed my life too!!
I’ve read it over and over and have tried so many of her ideas!
Even made the giant shortbread cookie and gifted them on homemade cutting boards!
