The Coquette Trend

|

Have you heard of the Coquette trend? It’s a style that embraces a playful, and charming aesthetic, with a vintage flair. And lots of bows!

If you have seen the crazy coquette trend of bow photos on Tiktok then you know bows can be put anywhere … on a pickle, a remote control, ice cubes, and more ridiculous things I won’t mention here. I will be the first to admit that I love bows. So that got me thinking, can I jump on the coquette trend and add tasteful and creative bows to my home?

Coquette Definition

How popular is coquette? The TikTok hashtag #coquette has had 16 billion views.

So, is there a coquette definition? Key characteristics of coquette include feminine details, a soft color palette, texture and layering, vintage charm, and romance. It is cozy, pretty, and soft.

Or you could consider how the coquette trend was described by Los Angeles stylist Marisa Ledfors as “Gen Z’s take on flirty, soft, hyperfeminine style.”

Most of the coquette trends you see are in fashion but today I am going to share how to embrace this trend in your home.

The “coquette” trend, in the context of fashion and home decor, refers to a style that embraces a flirtatious, playful, and charming aesthetic, often with a touch of vintage or feminine flair. This trend draws inspiration from historical periods known for their elaborate and decorative styles, like the Rococo era, but it’s infused with a modern sensibility.

The coquette style often features elements that are traditionally considered feminine, such as ruffles, lace, bows, and floral patterns.

For me, it’s all about bows.

I painted this painting a few years ago and it’s been hanging in our primary bathroom ever since. For a few months, I was quite obsessed and painted a lot of bows. Most of those paintings sold but I am very happy I kept this painting.

The coquette trend typically leans towards soft, pastel colors like blush pink, baby blue, mint green, and lavender, though it can also include bolder, more dramatic hues.

There’s often a nod to vintage or antique styles, with decorative elements that have a classic, old-world feel. This can include furniture with curved lines, ornate details, and plush fabrics.

The coquette aesthetic is not just about being pretty; it’s also about having a playful and whimsical touch. This could be in the form of unexpected color combinations, quirky art, or whimsical decorative items.

Embracing the Coquette Trend in Home Decor: The Charm of Bows

In home decor, the coquette trend translates into creating spaces that feel cozy, romantic, and personal, with a distinctively feminine touch. It’s about crafting interiors that are not only visually appealing but also evoke a sense of playfulness and charm.

For the past week, I have been exploring how to incorporate bows into our home decor to embrace the coquette trend.

I didn’t want to add too much romance to our home (I like more of a vintage coastal modern feel)) so I took on a few projects to add some subtle bows to our home decor.

The Allure of Bows in Coquette Decor

Bows have long been a staple in fashion, symbolizing elegance and femininity. In home decor, they offer a subtle nod to the coquette aesthetic, bringing a sense of delicacy and grace to any space. Whether you prefer understated elegance or bold statements, bows can be adapted to suit various styles and preferences.

I thought it might be fun to make some napkin rings with bows. But I didn’t want to make all of my bows. Instead, I found some bows on Amazon and had lots of fun making these napkin rings!

Another idea I had was to add bows to your window treatments. But I don’t have any window treatments on our first floor! (I know, that’s crazy!) You might want to tie your curtains back with ribbon bows or choose draperies with bow details sewn into the design. This not only adds a decorative touch but also allows natural light to brighten up the space.

Cushions and Throw Pillows

Cushions and throw pillows are an easy way to introduce bows into your living room or bedroom.

I bought a bag of bows on Amazon and made these two adorable pillows in less than half an hour. Each pillow cover cost about $12.50 to make.

The bag came with two sets of bows in two color schemes. I took out the three colors I didn’t like and switched some of the bows between the two sets. Talk about easy and inexpensive!

These pillows were so easy to make. I took one of my favorite pillow covers and placed the bows on top. Then I hot glued them to the pillow. (You can also sew them but I didn’t have the time.)

I made this neutral pillow for our family and living rooms.

You can also buy pillows with bows. Look for pillows with bow ties on the front, or add your own by sewing ribbons onto existing pillows.

I even pulled out some of my farfalle pasta and put it in apothecary jars to add a few more bows to our home. Too funny!

Bedding

For a coquette-inspired bedroom, choose bedding with bow accents. This could be as simple as a duvet cover with a bow-tie closure or pillowcases with small bow details.

Furniture with Bow Motifs

Some furniture pieces come with bow carvings or shapes, especially in vintage or antique collections. A chair with a bow-shaped back or a dresser with bow handles can become a focal point in your room.

Wall Art and Decorations

Hang art that features bow motifs or create a wall gallery with framed bow prints. You can also use wall decals of bows for a playful touch in a child’s room or a nursery.

Lighting

Look for lighting fixtures with bow designs, such as a chandelier with bow details or lampshades adorned with ribbon bows.

Accessories and Accents

Small accessories like vases, clocks, or mirrors with bow details can subtly bring in the coquette aesthetic without overwhelming the space.

Balancing the Coquette Aesthetic

While bows are charming, it’s important to balance them with other design elements to avoid an overly kitschy look. Mix and match with different textures and materials. For instance, a velvet cushion with a satin bow offers a contrast in textures that can elevate the overall look of the room.

Whether through small accents or larger statement pieces, bows can add a touch of whimsy and elegance to your space. Remember, the key is in the details and the personal touches you bring to the design. By incorporating bows into your home decor, you can create a space that is both stylish and warmly inviting, a perfect reflection of the coquette charm.
