Guest Bedroom Ideas for the New Year

I just transformed a dual-queen bedroom into a luxurious king-bed space and I can’t wait to share my guest bedroom ideas.

By adding a new bed and mattress complete with new furnishings and a practical desk area, we made this bedroom a favorite spot for our kids and guests. It is amazing how easy it was to revamp this bedroom into a functional and efficient space.

Transforming a Bedroom: From Dual Queens to a King

The evolution of a room can significantly alter the atmosphere and functionality of a home. We recently undertook the project of revamping one of our bedrooms, transforming it from a space with two queen beds into a room centered around a luxurious king bed.

This transformation wasn’t just about changing furniture; it was about reimagining the space to meet the changing needs of our family and guests.

The Original Room: A Dual Queen Setup

For years, our home had a bedroom with two queen beds. Initially, this setup seemed ideal for accommodating multiple guests or giving our children space to spread out.

However, as our kids grew older, we noticed this room was always the last pick. The realization dawned on us: the absence of a king bed made the room less appealing, especially for kids or guests who were used to more expansive sleeping arrangements.

The Decision to Revamp

I have to give our son Matt the credit for realizing it was time for a change. He made the suggestion and the more we thought about it we realized it was a great idea.

The first step was to clean out the room, especially the closet. I am embarrassed to say that the closet still held lots of clothes and items the boys hadn’t used for years. After many trips to Goodwill, the closet was empty and ready for guests.

We also let go of our existing furniture, selling the two queen beds to make room for something more fitting. The goal was to create not just a bedroom, but a versatile space that could serve as a comfortable retreat.

Choosing the King

The centerpiece of this transformation was the new king bed. Selecting the right bed was crucial – it needed to be comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and of high quality.

After much research and testing, we chose a bed from Living Spaces that is one of the most popular beds sold today. It’s the Dean Sand bed and very reasonably priced, under $600 for a king and under $400 for a queen!

Matt suggested the mattress and we love it. We got the Nectar 12″ Hybrid Mattress from Amazon that promised comfort and durability. It’s not too soft and very comfortable. This choice instantly changed the room’s dynamics, giving it a more luxurious and grown-up feel.

Adding New Elements

With the bed in place, we turned our attention to other elements. New lamps were selected to provide both functional lighting and a touch of elegance. The bedding was easy to select as I chose the same linen duvet cover and shams that I have in two bedrooms at the beach house.

Since we already had the rug, I went with a taupe and white color scheme with highlights in blue. The vintage books and throws at the end of the bed complemented the room’s color scheme and enhanced the comfort of the new bed. These touches weren’t just about looks; they were about creating a cohesive and inviting space.

I also added my favorite Tessan power strip to each side of the bed making sure to get the one that has the port needed for the newest iPhone. Of course, we needed 10-foot phone cords just to make sure my guests would be comfortable charging and reading their phones in bed.

There was one nice long-term issue that was solved by adding the king-sized bed. A few years ago I replaced the ceiling light with a white chandelier that is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, it hung lower than I had thought and the boys, especially Michael, often hit their heads on the light!

I bought a replacement a few months ago but then realized that the king-size bed would sit under the light and we didn’t have to worry any longer about the boys hitting their heads. (Assuming no jumping happens on the beds!)

So I put the newly purchased hanging light in our weight room and it looks great.

Creating a Workspace

Recognizing the need for versatility, we also set up a desk area with a comfortable chair. There is a nook with a large window that is perfect for a desk so I moved this one upstairs and it fit perfectly. This addition turned the room into a multi-functional space, offering a quiet place for work or study.

I reused an old office chair but fully intend to purchase the one I bought for my craft room, the Duhome Linen Accent Chair from Amazon. It will look so much better in the space.

This work area needed not to feel like an afterthought; it needed to blend seamlessly with the rest of the room’s decor while being fully functional.

The Final Touches

With the major pieces in place, I added final touches like artwork, a cozy rug, and a decorative pillow (which was a DIY Pottery Barn knockoff I made here). The painting is a garage sale find and will eventually be replaced by a new abstract painting. I just need to find the time to paint it. These elements brought personality and warmth to the room, transforming it from a mere sleeping area into a space with character and charm.

The Kids’ Approval

The true test of our transformation came during the holidays when my son Andrew and our daughter-in-law Charlotte, stayed in the room. Their reaction was overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated the comfort of the king bed and found the desk area extremely useful. It was rewarding to see the room, once the least desirable, become a space they enjoyed spending time in.

A Successful Transformation

The journey from two queen beds to a king bed with added functionality and style was more than just a redecoration; it was about adapting our home to our family’s evolving needs.

The project’s success was evident in the room’s new popularity and the satisfaction of our kids. Because to be honest, that’s what really matters.

This transformation serves as a reminder that sometimes, changing a single room can have a profound impact on the entire home’s functionality and appeal.
