New Living Room Fall Decorating Ideas

For the first time in over a decade, I had the chance to experience fall decorating in my living room in a whole new way.

Okay, maybe not entirely new —I didn’t buy brand-new couches, but I did get beautiful new slipcovers, and let me tell you, they have completely changed the space. The slipcovers are a gorgeous sage green, and that one choice dictated the entire palette for my fall decorating this year.

When I first saw the couches dressed in their new slipcovers from Calico, I knew I wanted to highlight their soft, calming color rather than compete with it.

So, I built my fall palette around sage green, warm gold, and accents of orange. The combination feels cozy, seasonal, and fresh all at once. It’s different from the traditional fall colors of rust and burgundy, yet it still nods to autumn’s warmth.

Color is always my starting point when I decorate, and the sage green felt like the perfect backdrop. I love how versatile this shade is as it pairs beautifully with neutrals, brights, and warm tones. For fall, I leaned into the richness of gold and the cheerful vibrancy of orange.

  • Sage Green grounds the room and brings in that sense of calm. It’s sophisticated but soft enough to feel approachable.
  • Gold accents add a touch of warmth and elegance. Whether it’s in the shimmer of a vase or the glow of a candle holder, gold instantly makes a space feel special.
  • Orange is my pop of seasonal fun. It brightens the room and ties everything together without overwhelming the palette.

Using Faux Florals to Create Texture and Depth

One of my favorite ways to decorate seasonally is with faux florals. They’re an investment that pays off year after year, and the options available now are so realistic you’d hardly guess they aren’t fresh.

This year, I layered faux eucalyptus branches, golden leaves, and small pops of orange blossoms throughout the room. I tucked them into vases on side tables, arranged them on the mantel, and even added a few stems into woven baskets. The mix of greenery with warm tones adds depth to the room, softening the structure of the furniture and giving everything that lived-in, seasonal feel.

A tip I love to share: don’t be afraid to mix your faux florals with real seasonal branches or flowers. Even just a handful of fresh blooms in a vase of faux greenery can add fragrance and life.

Creative Co-Op Finds That Bring It All Together

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it, Creative Co-Op is one of my favorite brands for home decor. Their pieces always feel stylish and timeless, and they work perfectly with both vintage and modern looks.

For this living room refresh, I used a few Creative Co-Op items that were just right for the season. Three textured ceramic vases on the side table became the highlight. A set of painted mercury glass balls added that extra glow I was looking for on the coffee table. The beauty of pieces like these is that they can stay out long past the season. Mix them with other accents and they’ll transition seamlessly from fall to winter.

The Power of Pillow Covers

If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you know how much I love a good pillow cover swap. They’re such an affordable way to give a room a whole new look without needing to buy all new pillows.

This season, I chose pillow covers in soft sage, muted gold, and a patterned fabric that ties everything together with touches of orange. Layering them on the couches instantly made the slipcovers feel styled for fall. I love mixing textures, too, with a velvet pillow against a linen one, or a knit paired with a smooth fabric. It keeps the look cozy and enjoyable.

Pillow covers also let me experiment with bolder colors without committing long-term. If I decide next year I want to lean more into rust or brown, I can swap them out. For now, I’m loving how these hues echo the slipcovers and florals throughout the space.

Small Touches That Make a Big Difference

Beyond the significant changes like slipcovers and florals, I added more minor touches that tie the whole room together. A golden-hued throw draped over the couch, a stack of seasonal coffee table books, and a few vintage items tucked into corners give the space layers of personality.

Artwork also plays a significant role in fall decorating for me. I added a single oil painting to a standing gold-painted frame, and the glow it casts at night makes the whole room feel magical.

And because fall is all about creating warmth, I didn’t shy away from texture. Woven baskets, rattan trays, and ceramic vases all add subtle interest without overwhelming the color palette.

A Fresh Start After a Decade

It’s incredible what a difference these slipcovers made. After decorating around the same neutral couches for a decade, the sage green felt like a fresh start. It inspired me to rethink the palette, the textures, and the mood of the entire living room.

I’ve fallen in love with the space all over again. It feels new, yet still so true to my style and the character of our home.

Decorating for fall with sage green, gold, and orange has reminded me that even the most minor changes, like new slipcovers and a few updated accents, can breathe new life into a room.

As we move deeper into fall, I know this palette will transition beautifully into the holidays, too. I can already imagine layering in richer greens and reds when winter arrives. But for now, I’m savoring the way my living room feels: fresh, cozy, and perfectly decorated for autumn.

This makeover is proof that you don’t need to start from scratch to get a new look. Sometimes it just takes one bold change, like slipcovers in a new color, to spark a whole new decorating direction.
