Kitchen Christmas Decor
The holiday season is a time of warmth and joy, and I love to embody this spirit in the heart of the home with kitchen Christmas decor.
With the right touches, you can transform your kitchen into a Christmas wonderland that’s both functional and festive. Here’s how to bring the magic of Christmas into your kitchen, especially if you’re working with a white kitchen and some bright holiday colors.
Decking the Halls in the Heart of the Home: Kitchen Christmas Decor
The fun combination of red decor and apple green (on our walls!) in our kitchen sets a lively and festive holiday tone.
Embrace Your Christmas Colors
My Christmas colors are inherently Christmassy, making the decorating process much easier and more integrated. It helps to have a white kitchen with green walls.
Of course, you can add Christmas decor to any style and color palette in your kitchen. We all likely have to remove some decor to make room for holiday decor. I had a lot of fall decor in our kitchen and it took me a while to store it all away!
Simplifying your kitchen before you start decorating for the holidays makes it so much easier to decorate.
Complementary Decorations
Start by choosing decorations that complement your existing Christmas colors. For a kitchen of white cabinets and counters and apple green walls, traditional Christmas colors work wonderfully. Think rich reds, deep greens, and crisp whites.
For a darker kitchen, try a winter white theme to add a warm and welcoming feel. I think you can add winter white to almost any kitchen color palette!
Textile Touches
Consider adding small textile accents such as kitchen towels, chair cushions, or a festive table runner in your color scheme. These can add warmth and comfort to the space without overwhelming it.

Wreaths and Bells: A Classic Touch
Wreaths on the Back of Chairs
Adding wreaths or bells with a colorful ribbon on the back of counter stools or dining chairs is a simple yet effective way to sprinkle Christmas cheer. The cranberry ribbon beautifully ties in with the reds in our kitchen, creating a cohesive look.
Doorway Decor
Don’t forget the kitchen door! A larger wreath here, perhaps with some red berries and greenery, will welcome anyone entering the kitchen.
Functional Festivity
Since the kitchen is a functional space, especially during the holidays, it’s important to balance decoration with practicality.
Uncluttered Countertops
Keeping countertops uncluttered is key, especially when you have a lot of holiday cooking and baking to do. Opt for decorations that don’t take up too much space or can be easily moved.
Festive Containers
Utilize festive containers, vases, wire baskets, or jars for storing ingredients. These can be both decorative and practical, adding to the holiday vibe while serving a purpose.
Creative Greenery
Greenery is a quintessential part of Christmas decor, and there are creative ways to incorporate it into your kitchen.
Faux Greenery Baskets
Place a basket with faux greenery or a small Christmas tree on the back side of the countertop or top of the refrigerator. This brings in the festive spirit without taking up valuable workspace.
Christmas Window Decorations
Hang wreaths in the kitchen windows. They look charming from both inside and outside and add a touch of green against our white molding and trim.
Herb Garden
For a functional twist, consider a small indoor herb garden decked with tiny fairy lights. I put mine in a small vase. It’s both decorative and practical for holiday cooking.
Lighting: Set the Mood
The right lighting can transform your kitchen from a regular cooking space to a cozy, festive look.
Fairy Lights
String fairy lights under cabinets or place a small lit tabletop tree on the counter. They offer a soft, warm light that can make the whole room feel cozy.
Christmas Candles
If you have the space, consider a safe spot for Christmas candles – perhaps a scented candle on the windowsill or a small arrangement on the dining table.
Personal Touches
Adding personal or handmade touches can make your Christmas kitchen decor feel more intimate and special.
Advent Calendar
I made this Advent calendar many years ago. I actually made six of them, one for my parents and one for each of my four siblings and me. It’s one of my most treasured Christmas items.
You can find the Advent Calendar DIY here.
Homemade Ornaments
If you’re crafty, homemade ornaments can add a unique touch. These can be hung on any existing hooks or placed in decorative dishes in the kitchen.
Family Photos
Integrate some small framed family photos from previous Christmases. This personal touch can bring back lovely memories each time you enter the kitchen.
Festive Accessories
Accessorizing your kitchen with Christmas-themed items is a fun way to enhance the holiday mood.
Christmas-Themed Dishes and Mugs
Bring out any Christmas-themed dishes, mugs, and glasses. Even if they’re not in use, they can be arranged to contribute to the decor.
Festive DIY Projects
Dress up your kitchen table or island with DIY projects, adding a pop of color and texture. I made these ribbon trees and you can find the DIY here.
Bringing it All Together
The key to successful holiday decor in the kitchen is balance.
It’s about creating a festive atmosphere while keeping the space functional and true to your style.
Use your existing color scheme as a base, and build upon it with complementary decorations, functional festive touches, and personal elements.
Remember, the goal is to create a space where memories are made, meals are shared, and the holiday spirit is alive and well.
Enjoy the process of decorating, and don’t forget to step back and appreciate the transformation.
Your kitchen is not just a place for cooking; during the holidays, it becomes a backdrop for some of the season’s most cherished moments.
Happy decorating!
