How to Host an Amazing Theo of Golden Book Club Dinner

Some book club gatherings are fun, but this Theo of Golden Book Club inspired evening became something truly unforgettable.

After reading this beautiful and inspiring book about kindness, friendship, and seeing the goodness in others, I knew I wanted to create more than just a dinner party for my girlfriends. So I transformed our home into “Chalice,” recreated the warmth and charm of the story with charcoal portraits, personalized notes, Portuguese music, and wine, and hosted one of the most meaningful evenings I have ever shared with friends.

How to Host an Amazing Book Club

There are book club evenings that are lovely, and then there are evenings that stay with you forever. Hosting a Theo of Golden book club dinner turned out to be one of the most meaningful gatherings I have ever hosted in our home.

If you have read Theo of Golden, then you already understand why. This beautiful book is filled with kindness, compassion, friendship, and the reminder that small gestures can profoundly change people’s lives. I finished the book feeling inspired and emotional, and I immediately knew I wanted to create an experience for my friends that captured the story’s spirit.

A black door with a brass knocker and mail slot, flanked by white columns. A sign on the door reads “Please Come In. OPEN.” The house number “2056” is above the door.

So I decided not to simply host a book club dinner.

I wanted my guests to step into the world of Theo.

What followed was one of the most thoughtful and memorable evenings I have ever planned, complete with charcoal portraits, personalized letters, Portuguese music, green wine, and a cozy dinner inspired by the warmth and generosity found throughout the book.

And honestly? It was magical.

Recreating the Coffee Shop “Chalice”

A beige sofa sits against a wall displaying twelve framed black-and-white portraits of women arranged in three rows.

One of the most memorable settings in the book is Chalice, the coffee shop where the charcoal portraits hang on the walls. That became the inspiration for the entire evening.

The first thing I did was create a gallery wall of charcoal portraits of all of my girlfriends.

I used ChatGPT to create the portraits, and the process was surprisingly easy. I uploaded photos from each friend’s social media account and asked ChatGPT:

“Create a charcoal drawing from this photo.”

The results were incredible.

Each portrait looked hand-drawn and artistic, and every single one captured my friends’ personalities beautifully.

I printed the portraits, placed them in inexpensive black frames, and hung them together in our family room exactly like a gallery wall in a cozy coffee shop.

When my friends arrived, they were stunned.

A dining table set with plates, glasses, flowers, and lamps is in the foreground; a white sectional sofa and framed black-and-white photos are in the background.

Some laughed. Some got emotional. Everyone immediately walked over to the portraits to find their own and admire everyone else’s.

It completely transformed the room.

A beige wall displays six framed black-and-white portraits of women, each with a small label beneath, above a light-colored couch.
Sorry, the reflection on the frame doesn’t show the photo as well as it looks!

The portraits instantly became the centerpiece of the evening and set the tone for everything else.

Welcoming Everyone to “Chalice”

A sign on a door reads "Chalice Coffee Shop, Golden, Ga, Open Monday-Saturday 8 am-5 pm, Sunday 8 am-5 pm" with "OPEN" in large red letters below. A gold door knocker is above the sign.

To continue the theme, I created a sign for the front door welcoming everyone to Chalice, the fictional coffee shop from the book.

It was such a simple detail, but it immediately made guests feel like they were stepping into another world.

I love creating immersive experiences when I entertain, and small details like this always make the biggest impact.

Inside the dining room, I kept the table soft and romantic with pink flowers, woven chargers, candlelight, and layered dishes. I wanted the evening to feel warm, thoughtful, and personal, just like Theo himself.

Personalized Notes From “Theo”

A wooden dining table is set with pink plates, woven placemats, pink floral napkins, glasses, and floral centerpieces. A lamp and a printed note sit at one place setting.

The most meaningful part of the evening may have been the personalized notes.

I wrote a heartfelt letter to each friend, reminding her of the qualities that make her special, kind, generous, strong, creative, thoughtful, and loved.

Then I signed each note:

With gratitude,
Theo

These notes became the place cards at each setting.

I bought some small wooden easels to hold the place card notes.

Many of my friends later told me they planned to keep the notes forever.

And honestly, that was exactly the point.

One of the most beautiful messages in Theo of Golden is that people rarely hear enough kind things about themselves. I wanted every guest to leave feeling seen and appreciated.

It turned out to be one of the simplest yet most emotional details of the evening.

Custom “Chalice” Napkins

A brown and white checkered napkin with a scalloped edge, featuring an illustration of a steaming mug and the word "Chalice" printed below it.

Of course, I could not resist adding one crafty detail to the evening.

Using my Cricut machine, I created iron-on “Chalice” logos for cocktail napkins. The soft neutral gingham pattern worked perfectly with the cozy coffee shop vibe.

The napkins were subtle, simple, and incredibly charming on the table.

And yes, everyone noticed them immediately.

As always, I am convinced the small thoughtful details are what make guests feel truly special.

Portuguese Music and Green Wine

Six women sit around a dining table set with pink plates, glasses, and floral napkins. A vase with flowers and a pitcher of water are on the table; artwork hangs on the wall behind them.

Since Theo of Golden is deeply connected to Portugal, I wanted the evening to feel inspired by that atmosphere as well.

I played soft Portuguese music throughout dinner, which added so much warmth and intimacy to the evening. The music created a relaxed ambiance that encouraged long conversations and lingering at the table.

I also served Portuguese green wine, which was absolutely perfect for the occasion.

If you have never tried Vinho Verde before, it is light, crisp, refreshing, and wonderful for entertaining. It paired beautifully with dinner and felt like such a meaningful nod to the setting and culture of the book.

The Dinner Menu

A dining room with two wooden tables set for a meal, decorated with flowers, place cards, and lamps, with a landscape painting on the wall and natural light from windows.

I kept the dinner menu simple but elegant.

The main course was a delicious chicken dish served alongside a fresh salad, warm bread, and wine. I didn’t want the food to feel overly formal because the focus of the evening was really about conversation and connection.

And there was a lot of conversation.

We talked about kindness, friendship, generosity, grief, creativity, and how deeply the book affected us.

It was one of those evenings where nobody looked at their phones and nobody wanted to leave the table.

Those are always the best nights.

Why This Book Club Felt Different

A wooden dining table is set with patterned plates, glassware, cutlery, pink floral napkins, menus on card holders, and a centerpiece of pink and green flowers.

I have hosted many book clubs over the years, but this one felt different.

Maybe it was the subject matter of the book.
Maybe it was the portraits.
Or maybe it was the personal notes.

But I think it was really because the evening reminded all of us how powerful kindness can be.

There was something incredibly meaningful about sitting around a table filled with women who have supported each other through marriages, children, careers, challenges, celebrations, and decades of friendship.

And then taking a moment to intentionally tell each person why she matters.

We do not do that enough.

Sending Everyone Home With Their Portrait

A beige couch sits against a light gray wall with multiple empty hooks; one small black-and-white framed photo, rumored to feature Theo of Golden Book Club, is hung on the left side of the wall.

At the end of the evening, each guest took home her framed charcoal portrait.

Watching everyone leave carrying their portraits honestly made me emotional.

It felt like they were leaving with a piece of the evening and a reminder of how loved they are.

Several friends texted me later saying they had already hung their portrait at home.

That made me happier than I can explain.

Ideas for Hosting Your Own Theo of Golden Book Club

If you are planning your own Theo of Golden gathering, here are a few ideas that made our evening extra special:

  • Create a cozy coffee shop atmosphere
  • Use candles and soft lighting
  • Play Portuguese music
  • Serve Portuguese wine
  • Write personalized notes for guests
  • Display meaningful artwork or portraits
  • Keep the menu simple and relaxed
  • Encourage thoughtful conversation
  • Focus on kindness and connection

You absolutely do not need to recreate everything I did.

Even one thoughtful detail can transform an ordinary book club into something unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Hosting this Theo of Golden book club reminded me why I love entertaining so much.

Yes, I love the flowers and the tablescape and the creative details.

But what I really love is creating moments people remember.

This evening was filled with kindness, warmth, gratitude, friendship, laughter, and meaningful conversations, which feels very fitting for a book like Theo of Golden.

It was not just a dinner party.

It was an experience.

And without question, it was one of the most incredible evenings ever.
