How to Grill the Perfect Tri Tip Steak on the Current Electric Grill

A steak grilling on a barbecue overlooking a beachfront view with a clear sky and calm sea.

You might remember when I set up our new Current Dual Zone Electric Grill, on the deck at our beach house. We have made chicken, veggies, and pizzas, and today, we were ready for a nice steak. Tri-tip it was!

If you have followed me for a while, you know how much I love to multi-task.

Would you believe that while I was cooking the tri-tip, I took a walk on the beach hunting for sea glass, read a book, and made a salad?

I have gotten smarter and connected my smartwatch to my Current Electric Grill. I was walking on the beach and was notified that the grill had heated to 400 degrees. So I quickly stopped at the house, put the steak on the grill, connected the temperature probe, set the timer, and returned to finish my walk.

How awesome is that?

This is the best recipe for Tri Tip steak and marinade. And to top it all off, I am sharing my favorite grilled artichoke recipe.

Grilling Tri Tip Steak on the Current Electric Grill

Yield: 8 servings

The Best Grilled Tri Tip

Ingredients

  • 1 (3-pound) tri tip steak
  • For the Marinade:
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, dried rosemary, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Place the tri-tip steak in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish, and pour the marinade over the steak. Ensure the steak is fully coated in the marinade, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  2. Preheat the Current Backyard Electric Grill: Connect the grill to a power source and preheat it to 400°F (205°C), using the Current Backyard app to monitor and control the temperature. The app can be synced with your Apple smartwatch for convenient monitoring of your cooking, allowing you to keep an eye on the temperature and receive alerts right on your wrist.
  3. Grill the Tri Tip Steak: Once the grill is preheated, remove the steak from the marinade and discard any excess marinade. Place the steak on the grill grates and close the lid. Grill the steak for about 15-20 minutes per side or until the internal temperature reaches your desired level of doneness. Aim for an internal temperature of 130-135°F (54-57°C) for medium-rare.
  4. Rest and Slice: Once the steak reaches the desired temperature, transfer it to a cutting board and rest for 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, ensuring a juicy and flavorful steak. Slice the tri-tip against the grain into thin slices, and serve immediately.

Side Dishes to Serve with Grilled Tri Tip Steak

No grilled steak is complete without a selection of delicious side dishes to complement the flavors and textures of the meat. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  1. Grilled Vegetables: Take advantage of the grill’s heat by grilling various vegetables such as bell peppers, zucchini, eggplant, and asparagus. Drizzle the vegetables with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and grill until tender and charred.
  2. Garlic Mashed Potatoes: Whip a batch of creamy garlic mashed potatoes to serve alongside the steak. Boil the potatoes until tender, mash with butter, milk, and minced garlic, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Grilled Corn on the Cob: Grill ears of corn on the cob until charred and tender, then slather with butter and sprinkle with salt and chili powder for a spicy kick.
  4. Caprese Salad: Celebrate the flavors of summer with a refreshing Caprese salad made with ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and fragrant basil leaves. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and extra virgin olive oil for flavor.

I love to cook artichokes, and grilled artichokes are the best. I always steam them in the microwave first, which speeds up the cooking time and ensures a well-cooked artichoke.

Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 large artichokes
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Instructions:

Prepare the Artichokes: Start by rinsing the artichokes under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Trim the stem of each artichoke to about 1 inch and cut off the top quarter of each artichoke using a sharp knife. Use kitchen shears to trim the sharp tips of the outer leaves.

Microwave-Steaming: Place the prepared artichokes in a microwave-safe dish and add 1 inch of water to the bottom of the dish. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon over the artichokes, then place the lemon halves in the dish. Cover the dish with a microwave-safe lid or microwave-safe plastic wrap.

Microwave the artichokes on high for 10-12 minutes or until the outer leaves are tender and easily pull away from the artichokes. Remove the dish from the microwave and carefully drain the water. Prepare the Lemon Herb Butter: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, chopped thyme, and the juice of the remaining half of the lemon. Stir well to combine, then season with salt and pepper to taste.

Grill the Artichokes: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Carefully transfer the steamed artichokes to the grill and place them cut side-down. Grill 5-7 minutes or until the cut sides are charred and lightly caramelized. Flip the artichokes over and brush the tops generously with the lemon herb butter mixture. Continue grilling for 5-7 minutes or until the artichokes are tender and the butter is melted and bubbling.

Serve: Remove the grilled artichokes and transfer them to a serving platter. Serve hot with additional lemon herb butter on the side for dipping. Enjoy the tender, smoky flavor of these delicious grilled artichokes!

Notes

Tip: To eat the artichokes, pull off the outer leaves one at a time and scrape the tender flesh at the base of each leaf with your teeth

  1. Looks wonderful, Leslie! We love tri-tip and have it often. Such good flavor! I still remember when it was well under $2 a pound, but then that ship has sailed for lots of things.
