Fall Home Decor Ideas
As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange, it’s the perfect time to begin planning your fall home decor.
With some planning and creativity, you can transform your living areas into inviting sanctuaries that embody the fall season’s essence. Why not start planning to infuse your spaces with warmth and coziness?
Fall Decor Inspiration
Today, I will guide you through my process of planning fall decor for the living room, family room, dining room, and kitchen. We’ll also discuss how to select an inspirational photo and color palette, and explore various ideas to create a harmonious and stylish autumnal ambiance throughout your home.
It’s August 1st, and it’s time to think about fall home decor ideas.
But I do have to clarify one thing.
I am not decorating my home for fall yet.
It’s a little too early for that.
I am just planning, dreaming, and having fun.
And I’m still enjoying my summer! Hehe.
Fall Home Decor Inspiration and Color Palette
Before diving into fall decor’s intricacies, finding an inspirational photo that aligns with your vision is helpful.
I began browsing magazines, websites, and social media platforms to discover images resonating with me. I searched for photos that captured fall’s cozy and rustic charm, featuring warm color schemes, natural textures, and seasonal accents.
Then, I received a fall decor email from Pottery Barn and knew I had found my inspiration. The photo above perfectly encapsulates everything I want for my fall home decor plan. However, I aim to use this as inspiration rather than replicating the exact look.
And just so you know, this isn’t the first time Pottery Barn has inspired my fall decor ideas!
Fall Color Palette
Once you’ve chosen your inspiration photo, it’s time to define your color palette. Traditional fall colors such as burnt orange, deep red, golden yellow, and earthy browns are popular.
However, don’t limit yourself to these classics; incorporate unexpected hues like rich plum or olive green to add a contemporary twist. Remember, the color palette should complement your existing furniture and decor, creating a cohesive and harmonious look.
Since I love my inspiration photo, I used my favorite free color palette generator called Coolors. I uploaded my images and then clicked on the colors in the photo I wanted to use.
It’s hard to pick a color palette, but I chose the first one from the three above!
I may sometimes use affiliate links on this blog, which means a small commission is earned if you purchase via the link. The price will be the same whether you use the affiliate link or go directly to the vendor’s website using a non-affiliate link.
Finding Fall Home Decor
The next step is to start gathering fall home decor.
Begin by exploring your own home. Open up closets and storage areas to find items that fit or complement your fall color palette.
Some of you might wonder why I didn’t buy everything from Pottery Barn, as seen in the photo.
I did purchase a few items, but I wanted my fall decor to be inspired by the photo, not a replica. So, I used the photo as a guide and searched Google Photos for similar items.
Google Photos is a versatile tool for organizing and storing personal photos and for discovering inspiration from images online.
You can download the Google Photos app to your phone. Save any inspirational photo to Google Photos, then conduct a reverse image search. This lets you explore similar images, check product details and availability, compare prices and reviews, and purchase from your chosen source.
To use this feature, open the photo you like in Google Photos and select Google Lens. Scroll down to see matches and similar items for sale.
My favorite search option is Amazon’s photo search, Amazon Lens. On your phone, tap the search bar in Amazon, and below, you will see Search with Photo. Tap that and then upload the photo. It will find everything on Amazon that is similar to the item selected.
Here are the flowers I found on Amazon that inspired me.

Planning Fall Home Decor Ideas in Different Rooms
Fall Living Room Decor: Cozy and Inviting
Incorporate rich, warm hues such as burnt orange, soft coral, mustard yellows, and earthy browns. These colors can instantly transform your living room into an autumnal haven.
Textiles and Throw Pillows
Switch out your summer throw pillows and blankets for ones with fall colors and textures. Think velvet, wool, and chunky knits. Plaid and houndstooth patterns are also great for adding a touch of fall.
Decorative Accents
Mantel Decor: Adorn your mantel with fall garlands made of leaves, pinecones, and mini pumpkins. Add some candles in autumnal colors for a warm glow.
Coffee Table: Create a centerpiece using a rustic tray filled with a mix of candles, small pumpkins, and a vase of fall flowers like chrysanthemums or sunflowers.
Wall Art: Replace summer prints with artwork that reflects the season, such as landscapes showcasing fall foliage.
Lighting:
Use warm lighting to enhance the cozy atmosphere. String lights, lanterns, and candles can add a soft, inviting glow to your living room.
Dining Room: Elegant and Seasonal
Table Setting
Table Runner and Placemats: Opt for a table runner or placemats in fall colors or patterns and pair it with complementary placemats. Natural materials like burlap or linen can add a rustic touch.
Centerpiece: Use candles, gourds, pumpkins, and fresh greenery to create a stunning fall centerpiece. A wooden bowl filled with seasonal fruits like apples and pears can also be a beautiful and practical centerpiece.
Dinnerware and Glassware: Use plates and bowls in warm tones or with autumnal patterns. Gold or copper cutlery can add an elegant touch.
Decorative Elements
Chair and Window Decor: Tie a small bundle of dried wheat or a sprig of autumn foliage to the back of each dining chair with a piece of twine or ribbon. Add wreaths to the windows.
Buffet or Sideboard: Decorate your buffet with carefully chosen fall decorations, such as a bowl of pinecones, a fall-themed sign, or a vase filled with dried flowers.
Lighting:
A chandelier adorned with fall garlands or hanging ornaments can create a focal point. Dimmed lighting or additional candles can enhance the ambiance.
Kitchen: Warm and Functional
Countertop Decor
Seasonal Displays: Arrange a few pumpkins and gourds on your countertops. For a simple yet effective display, fill a glass jar with acorns or pinecones.
Fresh Herbs: Place pots of fresh herbs, such as rosemary or thyme, on the windowsill. Not only do they look lovely, but they’re also useful for fall cooking.
Functional Decor
Fall Towels and Pot Holders: Swap out your regular kitchen towels and pot holders for ones with fall colors or patterns. These small changes can make a big difference in creating a seasonal feel.
Spice Display: Create a small display of your favorite fall spices and herbs. Cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and cloves can be placed in clear jars for both functional use and aesthetic appeal.
Dining Nook
If you have a small dining nook in your kitchen, decorate it with fall-themed cushions and a small centerpiece. A simple vase with branches or a miniature pumpkin arrangement can be perfect for this cozy spot.
Bringing fall decor into your home doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. By focusing on key elements in your living room, dining room, and kitchen, you can create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere that celebrates the beauty of the autumn season.
Enjoy the process of decorating and make your home a warm and welcoming space for family and friends to gather and enjoy the fall festivities.
Happy decorating!
