Fall Decor Ideas in the Dining Room

Today, I’m sharing how I decorated our dining room with fall decor ideas. This year’s dining room design combines my fall color palette of warm gold and soft orange with a mix of my handmade pottery and purchased dinnerware.

While this isn’t the room we use the most, it’s the one you see first when you walk into our home. That makes it the perfect space to “dress up” with a seasonal look that’s both welcoming and beautiful.

Welcome to a fall blog hop! I’ve teamed up with some of my favorite bloggers to share fresh, inspiring ideas for decorating your home this season. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, and I love how each of us brings a different perspective and style to seasonal decorating.

At the bottom of this post, you’ll find links to all of their fall decor ideas—I know you’ll leave feeling inspired.

Why I Love Decorating the Dining Room for Fall

A beige vase with yellow autumn leaves sits on a wooden table set with ornate glassware and a white plate.

Our dining room doesn’t see as many family dinners as our kitchen or family room, but I still love giving it special attention each season. To me, it’s more of a “statement room”, a space that sets the tone when guests arrive.

Because we don’t use it daily, I can set the table and leave it styled for weeks at a time, making it the perfect place for faux flowers, painted pumpkins, and other decorative items that last.

It’s always rewarding to walk in the front door and see the dining room styled for fall. Even if we’re not eating in there, it makes the whole home feel more festive and welcoming. Faux florals, layered dishes, inexpensive glassware, and gold accents all work together to create a space that feels pulled together but not too fussy.

The Color Palette: Gold and Light Orange

A dining table set with yellow and white patterned plates, gold-rimmed glasses, white napkins, and a vase of yellow leaves, in front of large windows.

This year, I’m decorating with a softer fall palette. Instead of the traditional deep reds and bold oranges, I’ve leaned into warm golds, tans, and lighter shades of orange. The dining room is primarily gold, and this combination feels fresh, cozy, and just a bit unexpected.

Gold is the anchor color—it’s soft and calming but still seasonal. The gold accents bring warmth and elegance. And the pops of light orange tie everything back to autumn without overwhelming the room.

This palette has worked beautifully throughout my home this season, and it transitioned seamlessly into the dining room.

The Centerpiece: Faux Florals + Ceramic Pumpkins

A dining table set with gold-rimmed glassware, white plates, gold flatware, and a large vase of yellow leaves as a centerpiece, with sunlight coming through the window.

The centerpiece is always the star of my dining room table, and this year’s arrangement might be one of my favorites.

I started with faux florals in my fall color scheme: soft sage greenery, golden stems, and touches of light orange. Faux flowers are ideal for this room since they’ll look beautiful for months without needing water or sunlight. I arranged them in a low, wide vase so they wouldn’t block conversation across the table.

I also added an Anthropologie floral metal runner down the center of the table.

A white ceramic plate shaped like a pumpkin with a textured pattern, placed on a wooden surface with yellow decorative flowers nearby.

To add a touch of handmade and personal, I tucked in my white ceramic pumpkins that I created this month. These pumpkins, textured and glossed in white, look like little works of art on the table. They add texture and a one-of-a-kind charm that ties the whole look together.

The mix of handmade pottery and gold tableware gives the table both polish and personality, a combination I always strive for when decorating.

The Place Settings: Layers and Color

For the place settings, I love mixing and matching plates to create a layered, collected look. Here’s what I used:

The layered plates bring depth to each place setting, and the combination of gold and white salad plates keeps things interesting. I didn’t worry about everything matching perfectly—sometimes a little variety is what makes a table feel welcoming.

Gold Accents: The Finishing Touch

Gold has become one of my new favorite metals to use in fall decor. It has so much warmth and brightens any room.

On the dining table, I used a white ceramic vase with gold faux flowers for the centerpiece and gold chargers. They frame each place setting beautifully, tying in with the warm tones of the centerpiece. I also love how gold reflects candlelight in the evening—it creates the coziest glow.

If you don’t have gold accents, don’t worry! Copper works just as well, or you can spray paint thrifted chargers or candlesticks for a budget-friendly DIY option.

Mixing Amazon Purchased Pieces

Almost every item on this table was purchased on Amazon. I owned the plates, chargers, napkins, amber goblets, and gold wine glasses for years. The tall amber wine glasses are my only new purchase. Aren’t they fabulous?

Mixing Handmade and Purchased Pieces

I always try to blend handmade crafts with store-bought items in my seasonal decorating. The result feels more personal, creative, and unique.

In this dining room, my handmade white ceramic pumpkins are casual, but they pair beautifully with the purchased faux florals, gold chargers, and napkins. By mixing the two, you get the best of both worlds: the professional polish of ready-made items and the charm of DIY pieces.

These plates were easy to make. And they are so adorable. I cannot wait for more of them to come out of the kiln.

This approach also keeps things affordable. You don’t need to buy everything new each year; add a few handmade projects into the mix, and suddenly your space feels completely refreshed.

Tips for Decorating a “Showcase” Room

If your dining room isn’t used every day, it can be tricky to know how to decorate it for the season. Here are a few tips that work well for me:

  1. Use faux flowers and greenery. They last the entire season without maintenance.
  2. Create a set table. Even if you’re not eating in the room, a styled table makes it feel purposeful and beautiful.
  3. Incorporate handmade crafts. They add warmth and personality to a room that might otherwise feel too formal.
  4. Stick with a consistent palette. Select 2–3 colors and use them consistently throughout the space for a cohesive look.
  5. Add metallics for polish. Whether it’s copper, gold, or brass, a little shine goes a long way.

  1. Hey! Sort of a crazy question, but I know you like to use cloth napkins. Do you just wash and dry them after the meal and store for next time? They look so pretty on your tables.
