Today I am sharing some fall home decor DIY that I made. This DIY is easy and I absolutely how it turned out.

Today, have an interesting story to share with you. I just finished decorating our family room with fall home decor ideas from JOANN and I love how it turned out.

All of the fall home decor ideas in this room were inspired by a ball of yarn.

That’s right. A ball of yarn.

Do you see that pillow sitting on the chair? Well, I made it myself. I am so proud that I made it because of one reason. 

A week ago I did not know how to crochet. And yet I made this pillow cover by crocheting a Bobble Stitch! 

So how did I pull that off?

During a recent trip to my local JOANN store, I knew I wanted to make something out of textured yarn. There were so many options to choose from. I found three different yarn options in the color palette I wanted to use for fall decor in our family room. 

The three textured yarns I chose were Yarnspirations Bernat Velvet, Yarnspirations Bernat Freesia, and the Yarnspirations Bernat Symphony.

Since this was my first crochet project, I knew I needed to be somewhat realistic about what I could make. A blanket or throw was out of the question. Too big.

A pillow is a perfect size for a newbie project so I bought a size N crochet hook and one ball of each of the three yarns. 

Next, I reached out to the expert crochet-er (is that a word?) in the family, my daughter-in-law Charlotte. She walked me through the options which were the single crochet or double crochet stitch. I decided I would use the double crochet stitch because Charlotte told me it was a faster stitch. Then I watched some videos online to learn how to crochet.

Trust me when I say that crochet is not hard to do. It is also very forgiving. If you make a mistake you can easily take it out and start where you left off.

I watched about five videos and that’s when I got the idea that maybe I needed to try something fancier. 

There happened to be a video on the Bobble Stitch and I was convinced I could do it. 

Of course, when I told Charlotte, I am pretty sure she thought I was crazy.

But we all know that I am not crazy. I just love making things that look a lot harder to make than they really are.

The first thing I did was practice the Bobble Stitch with all three yarns. 

It is amazing to me how different the yarns look when I compared the yarns. I went back and forth trying to decide between the Bernat Freesia and the Bernat Velvet. I chose the Velvet because I thought would be easier to work with. Plus it looked less uniform so I thought it might be more forgiving. (I was fully expecting to make a mistake or two.)

And of course, it is the softest yarn ever!

I practiced a few more times and knew I could do this stitch. 

I already had a 12″ x 20″ lumbar pillow form so I started with a chain stitch that was 20.5″ just to be safe. Then I spent a few hours stitching and taking it out, just to make sure I knew how to make my pillow cover.

You can watch how to do the bobble stitch here. The first row is a single crochet stitch. At the end of the first row, you turn and work from the back and crochet the bobble stitches. Then you just rotate every row with single crochet and bobble stitch.

As you can see, my crochet skills aren’t bad for a first-time student.

Once I finished the crochet, I made a cover out of faux suede from JOANN and attached the crochet piece with a needle and thread.

My pillow was done! I found a lot of fall home decor ideas at JOANN to complete the family room.

Just so you know, I bought the white and orange pillows last year at JOANN.

I absolutely love these blush pink maple leaves from JOANN. Believe it or not, the pumpkin is real.

Our family room fall decor looks so great. I love the color accents and how well the decor works in the room.

Just remember, you might want to start in the yarn department at JOANN when you are selecting your fall decor. 

Obviously, you don’t need to be an expert to make something really wonderful.
