Spring Cleaning and Sunday Morning Coffee

|

I don’t know about you, but every spring I feel this strong pull to refresh something in our home, and this year I started in a place that might surprise you. It’s Spring Cleaning time!

The very first room on my spring-cleaning list was our nursery. And yes, I know that sounds a little unexpected, but it made perfect sense to me.

A nursery with a white crib, changing table with supplies, a bench with pink pillows, light curtains, and a large window letting in natural light.

Thanks for joining me for Sunday Morning Coffee. This is a place to share, learn, explain, dream, and have fun.

About Me

Spring Cleaning has Arrived, But in a Different Way

A cozy nursery with a white crib on the right, a rustic wooden table with baskets underneath by a window, and soft green walls.

Three years ago, when our grandson Graham was born, I transformed our old gym space and former sleeping porch into a room just for our grandkids. At the time, I was the mom of three boys, with one grandson on the way, and I didn’t hesitate for a second. The room was going to be blue. It felt classic, calm, and exactly right for a sweet baby boy.

But as life so often does, things changed in the best possible way.

A neatly arranged nursery features a white crib, changing table with baskets, a daybed, light curtains, and a large window overlooking trees.

Over the past few months, our family has grown again, and now we have two beautiful granddaughters. Suddenly, that blue nursery didn’t quite feel like it told the whole story anymore. It still worked, but it didn’t reflect who is filling that room now. And that is when I knew this spring refresh needed to start there.

I didn’t want to completely redo the room. I love it too much for that. Instead, I wanted to layer in softness and warmth and just a hint of something new. So I started with textiles, which is always my favorite place to begin.

A cozy nursery room with a white crib, a window seat with a pink pillow, beige curtains, green paneled walls, and a light patterned rug.

I found the prettiest floral crib sheets in soft shades of pink and added a gorgeous blanket that instantly changed the feel of the space. It was amazing how just those two pieces began to shift the entire room. From there, I kept going.

In the window seat, I had previously made a cushion that worked perfectly for the space, so instead of replacing it, I covered it with a vintage pink quilt. That one change might be my favorite. It brought in texture, history, and that cozy, layered look I always love.

A white wooden crib with a floral blanket draped over the side, positioned in front of a large window with curtains.

Of course, I couldn’t stop there. I added a few more pink quilts throughout the room, each one slightly different, which makes the space feel collected rather than decorated. And then I finished it all with my newest project, the pink floral pillow with free-motion stitching. It tied everything together in the most unexpected way.

A white crib with a floral-patterned sheet and a matching floral quilt, positioned near a window with natural light coming in.

What I love most is that the room still feels like the same space we created three years ago. It just feels more complete now. Softer, a little more feminine, and perfectly suited for all three of our grandchildren.

Spring cleaning doesn’t always have to mean clearing things out or starting over. Sometimes it is about paying attention to how your home is evolving along with your life and making small changes that reflect that.

This little nursery refresh did exactly that, and I have to say, it might be my favorite spring project yet.

What Worked This Week

Magnetic Embroidery Hoops

This week, I have to share what might be my biggest “what worked” in a long time because I am completely hooked on my new-to-me Brother embroidery machine.

Eight white rectangular blocks with caution and prohibition symbols are arranged in a square on a fabric, which is placed on a gridded cutting mat.

I have been using my Embroidery Brother Dream Machine every single day, and I am officially obsessed. I have been practicing nonstop and trying all kinds of projects, including appliqué embroidery, embroidery on t-shirts and baby clothes, patches, and more.

It has opened up a whole new creative world for me, and I cannot get enough. There is something so satisfying about watching a design come to life stitch by stitch. But if I am being honest, there was one part of the process that drove me crazy: hooping.

No matter how careful I was, lining up each item perfectly, smoothing the fabric, checking placement, the moment I tried to secure it in the hoop, something would shift. It felt like all that careful prep work would fall apart in seconds.

I knew there had to be a better way.

So after one too many frustrating attempts, I decided to try a magnetic hoop I found on Amazon for my Brother Dream Machine, and I am not exaggerating when I say it completely changed everything.

These magnetic hoops are a dream to use. There is no wrestling with fabric, no shifting, no stress. You simply place your fabric and let the magnets do the work. It is faster, easier, and so much more accurate. I actually look forward to hooping now, which is something I never thought I would say.

I feel like my embroidery skills have made a huge leap, and I am having so much fun. The hoop issue that made me really nervous is solved, and I can’t wait to create more items for my grandkids, family, and friends!

If you are doing machine embroidery and struggling with hooping, this is absolutely worth the investment. It has made such a difference for me, and it is the reason I have been able to enjoy and explore my machine so much more this week.

My Latest Project

My Latest Project

Three white cloths with pink embroidered names "Sophie" and "Clarke" are arranged with two bunches of light pink hydrangea flowers on a white surface.

There is something so special about creating a handmade gift for a baby, and these sweet little jackets might be some of my favorite projects yet.

I recently added machine-embroidered appliqué initials to the backs of three adorable pink jackets, each one personalized with a single letter.

A pink, fuzzy baby sweater with long sleeves and floral embroidery forming an oval design on the back, displayed on a light wood surface.

The letters C, S, and O represent my two granddaughters and the newest little addition to one of my team members’ families, which made this project even more meaningful. I love it when a creative project has a story behind it, and this one feels extra special.

Pink baby dress with "Olive" embroidered on the chest and strawberry print, next to a pink jacket with a large floral "O" embroidered on the back.

For each jacket, I chose a soft pink base and added a beautifully detailed appliqué letter filled with delicate floral embroidery. The combination of the textured fabric and the intricate stitching creates such a lovely contrast. It feels classic, feminine, and just a little bit heirloom-inspired, which is always something I am drawn to.

If you have ever worked with machine embroidery, you probably know that appliqué can feel a bit intimidating at first. But once you understand the steps, it becomes one of the most rewarding techniques.

I started by stitching the placement line for each letter, then added the fabric appliqué, trimmed it carefully, and finished with the decorative embroidery stitches that bring the design to life. Watching the flowers and details stitch out over the letter is truly magical.

I finished a few more projects, too. I love these all so much!

And I have to say, using my magnetic hoops made this process so much easier, especially on these thicker, cozy jackets. No shifting, no frustration, just perfectly placed designs every time.

These jackets are not just cute; they are keepsakes. I can already imagine these little girls wearing them, and hopefully saving them someday as a reminder of something made just for them with so much love.

Of course, my craft room has been a bit of a disaster with so many baby embroidery projects.

This week's to do list.
  • finish my embroidery projects
  • Get ready for my Grandson’s 3rd birthday.
  • Plant my raised vegetable garden.

I think this Watermark Tee Tutorial is adorable.
