How to Make Apple Roses

Making apple roses is a fun and creative way to decorate desserts and add an elegant touch to your baked goods.

Here are the Steps to Make Apple Roses:

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 medium-sized red apples (Honeycrisp or Gala work well)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons apricot preserves or apple jelly
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions:

Prepare the Apples

  • Wash the apples thoroughly and slice them in half. Remove the core and seeds from each half.
  • Using a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer, cut very thin slices of apple. The slices should be about 1/8 inch thick.

Create the Apple Rose Petals:

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the lemon juice, apricot preserves (or apple jelly), and water. Heat the mixture in the microwave for about 30 seconds until it becomes slightly warm and runny.
  • Place the apple slices in the bowl with the preserves mixture and toss gently to coat the slices. This step helps prevent the apples from browning and adds a hint of sweetness and flavor.
  • Microwave the Apple Slices (Optional):
  • To make the apple slices more pliable and easier to work with, you can microwave them for about 20-30 seconds. This step is optional but can be helpful, especially if your apple slices are thicker.

Assemble the Apple Roses:

  • Take one apple slice and lay it flat on your work surface.
  • Starting at one end, gently roll the slice up into a tight spiral, creating the center of the rose.
  • Continue adding more apple slices, one at a time, around the center, ensuring each new slice overlaps the previous one slightly. The curved edge of the apple slice should be facing up to resemble rose petals.
  • If necessary, you can dab a little extra preserves mixture or water on the end of the last apple slice to help it stick to the rest of the rose.
  • Carefully place the completed apple rose into a muffin tin, a tartlet shell, or directly onto your baking sheet to hold its shape while baking.

Bake (Optional):

  • If you’re using the apple roses as decoration on a pie or tart, you can bake them along with the pastry. If used as a garnish, baking is optional.
  • For this tart, I made the caramel apple filling, added them to the tart shells, and topped them with the apple roses.

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons ice water
  • For the Caramelized Apple Filling:
  • 3-4 medium-sized apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith work well), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • For the Apple Roses:
  • 2-3 medium-sized red apples (Honeycrisp or Gala work well)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons apricot preserves or apple jelly
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • For the Caramelized Drizzle:
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce or powdered sugar

Instructions

Prepare the Pastry Crust:

  1. In a food processor, combine the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and continue pulsing until the dough comes together and forms a ball.
  3. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Prepare the Caramelized Apple Filling:

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Add the thinly sliced apples to the skillet and toss them gently to coat them evenly with the caramel sauce.
  3. Cook the apples for 5-7 minutes, or until they are slightly softened and caramelized. Remove the skillet from the heat and set it aside to cool.

Prepare the Apples:

  1. Wash the apples thoroughly and slice them in half. Remove the core and seeds from each half.
  2. Using a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer, cut very thin slices of apple. The slices should be about 1/8 inch thick.

  9. If necessary, you can dab a little extra preserves mixture or water on the end of the last apple slice to help it stick to the rest of the rose.

Assemble the Individual Caramel Apple Tartlets:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a muffin tin or use individual tartlet pans.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled pastry dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out circles or squares slightly larger than the size of each muffin cup or tartlet pan.
  3. Gently press the pastry circles or squares into each cup or tartlet pan, ensuring the bottom and sides are well-covered.
  4. Pre-bake the pastry shells in the oven for 12 minutes. Let cool.

Fill the Tartlets:

  1. Spoon a small amount of the caramelized apple filling into each pastry-lined cup or tartlet pan, filling them about two-thirds full.
  2. Add the Apple Roses:
  3. Place one or more apple roses on top of the caramelized apple filling in each tartlet.

Bake the Caramel Apple Tartlets:

  1. Bake the tartlets in the preheated oven for 20-35 minutes, or until the pastry turns golden brown and the apples are tender. The baking time varies based on the muffin tin you use.
  2. Allow the tartlets to cool slightly before serving. Drizzle each tartlet with a spoonful of caramel sauce or powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness and indulgence.
