Inspiration for My Bedroom Makeover in a Month

I cannot believe it is the end of week two in our Makeover in a Month Challenge. I still have so much to do.
Which is a roundabout way of saying, I am behind!
I cannot believe it is the end of week two in our Bedroom Makeover in a Month Challenge. I am doing this challenge with three amazing bloggers, Karianne at Thistllewood Farms, Marion with Miss Mustard Seed, and Melissa from The Inspired Room. Our boys were in town this past week and stayed in the third-floor bedroom. They flew into town kept their distance from all of us so I wasn’t allowed to go up to their room. (I love that they are so careful these days.) Thus, I had no access to the room to start my remodel.
So this past week was a “behind the scenes” planning week.
I did stumble upon the perfect inspiration photo. The photo above is the master bedroom that belongs to Liz at Love Grows Wild. Isn’t it fabulous? I have seen this photo on Instagram many times and I love everything Liz did here. We have a similar wall behind our bed but it’s not near as dramatic as my inspiration photo.
This is the “before photo” of our third-floor bedroom that needs remodeling. Duh.
I am pretty sure that most people find an inspiration room before they plan a remodel. I didn’t do that. I selected all of my furniture, planned out most of the room, and then found my inspiration room.
I never said I did things in a conventional way. I am far from it.
The Bookcases
There is no doubt that these bookcases need some organization. But this is where the “function over fashion” or “fashion over function” dilemma happens.
My husband loves all of these books. I love some of them, not all of them.
Here is my first choice of what I would like to do with this bookcase.
But that means we would have to get rid of a gazillion books.
It is more likely I will have to do something like this.

The Bedroom Furniture
I mentioned that I had ordered all of the furniture from Bed, Bath and Beyond. I am thrilled that most of it arrived less than a week after ordering!

The Reading Chair
I also solved my chair upholstery problem. I found another chair for $5 and I have decided to make a slipcover for it.
In case you are wondering, I have tons of sewing experience and no slipcover experience. (I can do this!)
So what do you think?
I know. This isn’t the most amazing looking chair. In fact, it’s ugly. But it has good bones.
And it will look amazing with a slipcover on the chair and ottoman.
Before I get a gazillion messages, I may not have any slipcover experience, but I am really good at sewing. I have sewed all of my life and I have made suits, jackets, dresses, school play costumes, tailored shirts, and my wedding dress.
I look at it this way. It can’t be that hard to make a slipcover. A tailored jacket has to be just as hard. Or harder. Right?
This is the fabric I picked out. It’s a traditional striped ticking fabric. I selected this one because I didn’y want to struggle with matching a large design on the fabric. Hopefully, my fabric is thick enough to hide the chair fabric and doesn’t need lining. If it does, well I have experience with lining too!
I ordered 14 yards which should be more than plenty. I am fine with that because I can always make some pillows!
So what’s on the schedule for next week?
Pretty much only remodeling the bedroom and nothing else.
Here is my to-do list.
- Paint the bedroom
- Change the light fixtures.
- Put the new bed together and decide if I am going to add wood or wallpaper to the wall behind the headboard.
- Measure and cut out the slipcover.
Oh my. There is a lot to do.
But I cannot wait!
Looks awesome!!! I love the lighting you chose. Perhaps a future tutorial on the slipcover I’d love to try that on a chair in my bedroom good luck with this what a fun project hopefully not too hot this next week with the heat wave coming but you’ll be indoors take care

Could you use a sheer some way on or over the bookcase? Just slide to
one side may give make you like it better! Try it!!!

Bookshelves are great but I find I only use half the shelves for books ( I take books no longer in use And donate to local library) the other half filled with keepsakes etc

The fabric is from http://www.bestfabricstore.com. The ticking I bought was just under $7 a yard.

I love the Bee and Willow accessories. I’ve used them in my seasonal rental. Miss Mustard Seed has great videos on slipcovers. The chair will be amazing in that fabric. I’ve also seen books turned around so the pages are pointed out instead of the binding. May save the headache of which books go.

Funny – that chair is crazy busy and I am so surprised I don’t think it’s ugly – maybe due to the colors in it. But I realllly like the ticking you purchased.
Good inspiration, you can do this. Doesn’t help having lost a week but sometimes the fire getting hotter makes us jump higher. You got this.

The room is going to look fabulous, with everything you have ordered. Here is a random alternative idea for your chair — you could chalk paint it. I have a camel-back sofa that I would love to slip cover. I have watched the tutorials, and it looks doable, but then I goggled you-tube videos on painting fabric furniture, and found an Annie Sloan, and a very cute tutorial from Debi at Debi’s Diary. She carries a much more reasonable chalk paint. There is also Rustoleum that could be used. So, I think that is the route I am going to take. It seems as long as you sand in between coats, and your paint is watered down, you won’t get a stiff fabric. It’s more like dying. Good luck!

Just a thought about painting the chair…..Denise at “[email protected] just did a tutorial on painting a chair…the thing is she made it look like leather! It turned out beautifully and she did a wonderful step-by-step tutorial on how to paint it and the colors she used. If you want to, you could paint a layer on the chair just to lighten it up so you don’t have to line the slip cover.
I also love ticking but there sure seems to be a huge difference in the weight(s) of ticking. I have some old feather pillows that have pink rose ticking in a wonderful weight that have lasted a zillion years and a 1/2 a zillion washings. Good luck with all.

I think your process will go fine, this is how you do things and your reveal always turns out great. Walt made us some book cases like you show in photo maybe 30 years ago, I had him white wash them and they still look great!

I have complete confidence that this makeover will be fabulous. I also have tons of sewing experience but I wouldn’t know where to begin to make a slipcover. But I know you’ll do a great job and can’t wait to see the finished product. BTW…I took a couple of your classes when you were at Karen Chicks gorgeous house in Laguna. I still cherish those memories.

SO fun! I’m with your husband on this one though – I love the books! Makes me feel like I’m in a library! I could sit in your cozy chair and read all day! Ok – maybe I’d come out and take a swim from time to time too! 🙂 Happy Sewing – can’t wait to see!
