How to Make Flower Cupcakes
February is the perfect time to make flower cupcakes. Are you ready to get crafty in the kitchen? Let’s make buttercream flowers together.
If you love making delicious and beautiful treats then you are going to love today’s post. I am going to show you how to make flower cupcakes that will wow everyone! If you think that cupcake decorating is too difficult, I think I can change your mind.
Rose Cupcakes for Every Holiday
With the advent of TV shows like Cake Boss and Cake Wars, it is incredible to see what can be done with cake decoration. Some of the cakes these days are simply amazing. To be honest, I have always been a little intimidated by cake decorating and these types of shows only solidified my intimidation.
But, I realized that even the best cake decorators in the world didn’t start out making huge, outrageous, incredible life-like cakes. So I decided to teach myself how to create some basic cake-decorating techniques. Up first, are flower cupcakes. And guess what, they aren’t that hard to make!
How cute are these flower cupcakes? I focused on one decorating technique, icing roses. They are the perfect size to create a flower cupcake. Aren’t they so much more fun than just plain icing and sprinkles?
I made these for Valentine’s Day last year but they are also perfect for Easter, birthdays, and just about every holiday.
Rose Flower Cupcakes
I know these aren’t perfect. Of course, they aren’t as I am not a professional cake decorator. But I made these on my first attempt and they look good enough to wow my family and friends and that is all I can hope for.
Cupcakes are the perfect treat because they are small and my recipe made two dozen cupcakes. By the time I had made a few of the flower cupcakes, I had built some confidence and by the time I had made a dozen, I felt almost like an expert. Well not quite, but I did get better with practice.
These cupcakes are just the cutest thing ever and just the right ratio of cake and frosting to satisfy any sweet tooth.
How to Make Rose Cupcakes
Buttercream flowers taste so good. And Buttercream Frosting is the perfect consistency to make these rose cupcakes. I made one batch of my Buttercream Frosting recipe and added a small amount of Wilton Rose coloring to 1/3 of the batter. I left the remaining batter white.
Buttercream Frosting for Flower Cupcakes
This Buttercream Frosting recipe is great for cakes, cupcakes, and more. Its unique flavor is just the best.
Ingredients
- 1 cup nonsalted butter (do not warm)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 - 6 TBL coconut milk (I like Thai Kitchen Organic)
Instructions
- Cream the butter until soft in a mixer for about two minutes.
- Add the sugar, vanilla, and three TBL of coconut milk.
- Add the remaining TBL of coconut milk as needed. If you are making roses, make sure the frosting is thick so it will hold its shape. If it gets too soft, place it in the refrigerator for about twenty minutes.
- When frosting cupcakes, place in the freezer for about one hour before decorating.
These are the tips I have collected over time. The top row is for the roses I made today. (I used the #127 tip to make these roses.) The tips on the bottom row make a more loosely-shaped rose. I promise to do something with them later!
If you are wondering how I learned to make these roses, I watched a lot of videos on YouTube. I cannot believe how long I waited to figure out how to do this, especially since this flower below is the very first one I have ever tried!
- one – Fill the bag with frosting. If you want a variegated look, place the pink frosting along the inside of the pastry bag and then fill the middle of the bag with white frosting. Using the tip #127, place the wide end on the cupcake and squeeze the frosting out to form a cone (or bud) with a point at the top.
- two – This is what the bud should look like.
- three – Keeping the large size of the tip at the bottom, squeeze out the frosting and repeat three times to cover the bud.
- four – Continue adding more frosting, continuing around the bud and turning the cupcake as you go.
- five – Add more frosting until you have reached the outside edge of the cupcake.
- six – Here is the finished cupcake!

Absolutely beautiful! And you made me believe I could do this!
The trick of white frosting down the middle and pink around is brilliant for achieving the lovely striated effect.

Thanks so much Cindy! 💕 Tasty too, hehe
Beautiful and I am inspired to make them myself. I love your blog, videos etc… amazing and inspiring
Thanks so much, Sue!
Leslie,
The cupcakes look like a pro made them!! You did a beautiful job. I used to bake a lot when my girls were growing up, but now they have moved away and have their own families. If all 5 of my grandsons lived here I would probably be baking. My husband has cut way back on eating sweets so if I bake, I end up eating more than I should. But very inspiring!
I totally understand! Thank you so much Debra.
These look fabulous, Leslie!

Thanks for the step by step instructions. I said to myself, had I not seen your steps you took making these, I would have lost my money betting that a professional chef made these. Looks to beautiful to eat. Yum! Thanks for sharing.
Of course! It really helps seeing it done live. Haha you’re too sweet, they are much simpler than they look! ☺️
