Fall Home Decor Planning: How to Create a Cozy and Inviting Home
As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange, it’s time to embrace fall home decor planning to infuse our homes with warm and inviting decor.
With a little planning and creativity, you can transform your living spaces into cozy sanctuaries that capture the essence of the upcoming fall season. Today I am going to share my process of planning fall decor for your living room, family room, dining room, and kitchen. We’ll also discuss how you can select an inspirational photo and color palette, and explore various ideas to create a harmonious and stylish autumnal ambiance throughout your home.
Fall Home Decor Ideas
I do have to clarify one thing.
I am not decorating my home for fall yet.
It’s a little too early for that.
I am just planning. And dreaming and having fun.
And still enjoying my summer! Hehe.
Selecting a Fall Inspiration Photo and Color Palette
Before diving into the intricacies of fall decor, it’s helpful to find an inspirational photo that aligns with your vision.
I started this by browsing through magazines, websites, and social media platforms to discover images that spoke to me. I looked for photos that evoked the cozy and rustic charm of fall, with elements like warm color schemes, natural textures, and seasonal accents.
And then I received a fall decor email from Pottery Barn and knew I had found my photo inspiration for fall. It’s the one shown above!
Everything in this photo is exactly what I want for my fall home decor plan. And yet, I want this to be an inspiration, not the exact look.
Define Your Fall Color Palette
Once you’ve chosen your inspiration photo, it’s time to define your color palette. Traditional fall colors such as burnt orange, deep red, golden yellow, and earthy browns are popular choices.
However, don’t limit yourself to these classics; consider incorporating unexpected hues like rich plum or olive green to add a contemporary twist. Remember, the color palette should complement your existing furniture and decor, creating a cohesive and harmonious look.
Since I love my inspiration photo, I used my favorite free color palette generator called Coolors. I uploaded my photo and then clicked on the colors in the photo I wanted to use.
Here is the result.
So now I have my color palette!
Find a photo that you like and try this! It’s so much fun.
Finding New Fall Home Decor
The next step is to start looking for fall home decor.
Of course, the first place to look is in your home. Open up the closets and pull out anything and everything that fits or goes with your fall color palette.
Many of you are wondering why I just didn’t buy everything from Pottery Barn that was in the photo.
I did buy a few things but remember, I wanted my fall decor to be similar, not exact. So I used the photo and searched in Google Photos for similar items.
Google Photos is a versatile tool that not only helps you organize and store your personal photos but also allows you to explore and discover inspiration from various images available online.
Google Photos is an app you can download to your phone. Save the inspiration photo to Google Photos, conduct a reverse image search, explore similar images and shopping results, check product details and availability, compare prices and reviews, and make your purchase from the chosen source.
Just open the photo you like in Google Photos and select Google Lens. Scroll down for matches and similar items for sale.
Here are the flowers I found on Amazon that inspired me.

Planning Fall Home Decor Ideas in Different Rooms
Fall Living Room Decor
The living room is often the heart of the home, and it’s the perfect space to showcase your fall decor creativity. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Cozy Textiles
Swap out lightweight summer fabrics for soft, chunky knits, plush velvet, and warm woolen throws in your chosen fall color palette. Drape them over sofas, chairs, and ottomans to add comfort and visual warmth.
Nature-inspired Accents
Incorporate elements from the great outdoors, such as pinecones, acorns, and twigs. Arrange them in a decorative bowl or use them to adorn mantels and coffee tables. You can also introduce dried wheat sheaves or rustic wreaths for a touch of rustic charm.
Candles and Mood Lighting
Set the ambiance with soft, flickering candlelight. Opt for scented candles with fragrances that evoke autumn, like cinnamon, apple, or pumpkin spice. Place them strategically around the room for a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Fall Family Room Decor
The family room is a place where you gather with loved ones, so it’s essential to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Consider these ideas:
Layered Textures
Add depth and dimension by layering different textures throughout the space. Mix and match plush pillows, faux fur throws, and woven rugs to create a tactile and inviting environment.
Seasonal Artwork
Update your wall decor with fall-themed artwork or prints. Choose images that reflect the beauty of the season, such as landscapes, autumnal foliage, or harvest scenes.
Accent Furniture
Introduce fall-inspired accent pieces like a distressed wooden coffee table, a cozy reading chair with a plaid throw, or a vintage-inspired side table. These additions can infuse the room with rustic charm and visual interest.
Fall Dining Room Decor
The dining room is the ideal space to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for memorable fall gatherings. Consider these ideas:
Tablescapes
Design an eye-catching centerpiece using seasonal elements like pumpkins, gourds, and fall flowers. Combine them with candles and rustic table linens to create an inviting tablescape that showcases the spirit of autumn.
Natural Elements
Incorporate natural elements like twigs, branches, and colorful autumn leaves into your dining room decor. Use them to create unique place cardholders or to adorn the backs of chairs.
Warm Lighting
Choose soft, warm lighting options for your dining room to create an intimate and inviting ambiance. Consider installing a dimmer switch to adjust the brightness according to the mood of the occasion.
Fall Kitchen Decor
The kitchen is the heart of any home, and incorporating fall decor into this space can add warmth and charm. Consider these ideas:
Seasonal Linens
Swap out your regular kitchen towels and oven mitts for ones in fall colors and patterns. Look for designs featuring pumpkins, leaves, or harvest motifs to add a festive touch.
Autumn-Inspired Displays
Arrange a small vignette of pumpkins, colorful gourds, and seasonal fruits on your kitchen countertop or window sill. Add a few scented candles or a fragrant potpourri to enhance the cozy ambiance.
Seasonal Tableware
Use autumn-themed plates, bowls, and serving platters during fall gatherings. Look for designs with leaf patterns or warm, earthy tones to complement your overall decor theme.
Planning your fall decor allows you to create a cozy and inviting home that embraces the beauty of the season. By selecting an inspirational photo and defining a color palette, you can set the tone for your decor.
From the living room to the kitchen, incorporating fall-inspired elements like cozy textiles, natural accents, and warm lighting will help create a harmonious and stylish atmosphere.
Embrace the charm of autumn, infuse your spaces with seasonal warmth, and enjoy the delights of this enchanting season within the comforts of your home.
