Make it Pretty

Autumn Colors

Fall Decor Living Room

There is something so warm and cozy about autumn colors. The list of gorgeous fall colors is a long one, but these are some of my favorites. Orange, gold, russet, aubergine, cranberry.

One of my favorite things about the fall palette is that the colors not only complement each other but augment and bolster each other.

I have a confession to make. Our living room is the hardest room in our home to decorate. The overall space is large and yet the individual areas seem just a smidge too small. And, the light on the living room side of the house is fickle which means the living room is usually pretty dark.

Fall, however, looks amazing in our living room. The colors seem to perk up the room and lighten it from within.

Pillow Covers

Fall Decor Living Room

One of the easiest and least expensive ways to add fall to your living room is by changing out your pillow covers. Just the covers, not the whole pillow.

I have a large stack of pillow covers that I have made. Two of my favorite things are art and sewing and I combined them into a sewing technique called free motion stitch embroidery. First, I paint a design on a plain pillow cover and then I sew around the painted areas which makes the painted design really pop.

Last year, I made the fall leaves pillow. Be sure to check out the post because you won’t believe the transformation from a plain pillow cover into a gorgeous work of art. Here is a link to all of my free motion embroidery pillow covers! You are going to be so inspired to make your own!

The pillow inserts stay on the couches and then I just change out the covers each season. It makes storage really simple and, I might add, compact. I organize the covers by season and keep them in clear containers so that it is easy to find each cover.

Mix Vintage and New

Fall Decor Living Room

Our home is filled with a mixture of vintage and new. In the picture above, can you tell which items are new and which are vintage?

You may be surprised to learn that the table to the left of the photo is new. Of course, the faux fall foliage is new too.

So which items are vintage? A lot of them! The vintage counter, french chairs (from Debra Hall Lifestyle), windows on the wall, sconces, calf bucket (with flowers), books, wood box, ironstone compote, and the cranberry punch bowl are all vintage.

The vintage counter (which is under the window) is a piece that I treasure. It is fabled that the piece lived in the home of a famous actress. I choose to believe that it is true. It makes the piece more interesting I think, don’t you?

Styled on the counter is a mixture of old and new as well. The faux leaves, the faux pumpkin that I decoupaged with fall napkins, the fall-scented candle, my DIY whitewash beaded cake stand, and the lamp are all new.

Create a Cozy Space for Quiet Time

Fall Decor Living Room

We have two seating areas in our living room. The first is adjacent to our fireplace. My husband loves to sit by the fire and read in the evenings. In the fall, after the sun has set and we’ve had dinner, he will bring a glass of wine into the living room, turn on the fireplace and read for a while.

This room is peaceful to him and it is quiet for reading.

The photo above is a view that I don’t often show. I’m not sure why, because I really like this photo. I love the vintage empty window frames that are on either side of the french doors.

The area in front of the fireplace is also a mix of vintage and new. I created the coffee table by painting an old chest and adding vintage tin tiles to the top. You can find the post on how I created it here.
