A New Way to Plant a Spring Garden

I am getting my spring garden ready by preparing my pots and raised beds with my new favorite potting mix. I am also adding a cutting garden!

I Am Finally Planting A Cutting Garden

After years, and years, and years of saying I was going to plant a cutting garden, I finally did it!

I love to garden, but am not a great gardener. Why do I say that? Because I am a really busy person and I don’t give my gardens the time and attention they deserve. But this year it’s all going to change.

Why? Because I planted a cutting garden and found a product that is going to do a lot of the work for me.

I have always wanted to be the kind of gardener who knows everything about gardening. You know … having tons of knowledge about growth zones, the best fertilizer, and what the best plants are for which areas in my garden. The reality, however, is that I just don’t have the time to learn it all.

But guess what? I just learned I don’t have to know it all.

Planting a Cutting Garden in My Raised Beds

I have four raised beds that I built a few years ago. They have been filled with vegetables and herbs, but I have been dying to grow a cutting garden.

I designated two of the raised beds for a cutting garden and two for vegetables and herbs.

When we started this project, one of the things I was most excited about is that Sta-Green Perfect Potting Mix is 1/3 the weight of the traditional potting mix. A 25-quart bag weighs only 7 pounds. The reason is that Sta-Green expands to 2.5 times its size when you fluff it.

You buy fewer bags that weigh less, but you cover the same amount of space as the heavy, dirty traditional potting mix.

Every year I have to add soil and amendments to the raised beds. (I have no idea where the soil goes, but the beds are about five inches lower every year!) I used only 9 bags of Sta-Green Perfect Potting Mix in each of the raised beds.

It fluffed up easily and was remarkably clean to work with. I wore gardening gloves, but honestly, I could have filled all of the raised beds without them.

Next, I secured the drip lines and began planting! In one bed, I have snapdragons, ranunculus, salvia, tulips, and bearded iris. I might have gone a little crazy with my flower choices, but I am excited about the bounty of flowers I will have.

In the next cutting garden bed, I have dahlias and gerbera daisies which are both so stunning in a bouquet.

For the vegetable/herb garden, I planted rosemary, basil, oregano, yellow peppers, and sage.

I decided to mix it up a bit and planted some berries and lavender in the last bed. How much fun is that going to be?

This is one of those projects that I wonder what took me so long to do it. Honestly, the Sta-Green Perfect Potting Mix made it so much easier than using a traditional potting mix.

I didn’t have to drag heavy bags into the car, out of the car, around the backyard and I was astonished at how clean it was to work with. It eliminated two of the reasons that I think I dragged my feet on getting it done.

Spring Garden in Clay Flower Pots

One of the ways that I love to introduce spring to my garden is by planting colorful flowers in clay flower pots. Years ago I found a vintage pot stand at a vintage flea market.

I love the way this pot stand looks when filled with healthy and happy flowers.

I was amazed when filling the clay flower pots, the Sta-Green Perfect Potting Mix is lightweight and so clean to work with. We planted over twenty pots and only used two bags of Sta-Green.

The secret to no-mess gardening is that Sta-Green Perfect Potting Mix is made of HydraFiber, not dirt. HydraFiber contains Canadian sphagnum peat moss, limestone, gypsum, a wetting agent, and a slow-release fertilizer that will feed plants for up to six months.

Planting the Pots

I love to have a patio filled with flowers and plants in pots and Sta-Green made it so easy. Whether you have a small patio area or a large garden area, planted pots with loads of gorgeous flowers can make a huge impact. Is it just me or are freshly planted pots an instant mood booster?

We started with my antique pot stand. It holds nine smaller pots on the top rack, seven medium pots on the middle rack, and five large pots on the bottom rack.

The smaller top pots hold pansies, ranunculus, and primrose. The middle rack holds ranunculus (because you can never have enough) and geraniums, and the bottom rack holds Icelandic poppies and geraniums.

The pots were so easy to plant. We placed the Sta-Green Perfect Potting Mix into the pot, fluffed it up a bit, added the flower, watered and we were done! I gave both the pots and the raised beds a good soak to get them all started. The HydraFiber is great for water retention, so we didn’t have any drippy pots. I love that there is also a fertilizer built-in that fertilizes for six months. How great is that?

I planted all of my pots in the vintage pot rack, but for individual pots on the patio, the lighter weight will make it easier to move my pots from one place to another. Easy-peasy.
