Summer Entertaining with Portmeirion Botanic Garden
One of my favorite china patterns, Portmeirion Botanic Garden, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and I can’t wait to share everything with you!
As you know, I love to mix and match china patterns when setting a table. I believe that my love for mixing and matching may stem from the Portmeirion dishes I have had for over twenty years. They are perfect for summer entertaining!

50th Anniversary of Portmeirion Botanic Garden
The Portmeirion Botanic Garden Collection is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. To celebrate, Portmeirion has created a gorgeous commemorative Portmeirion Botanic Garden 50th Anniversary 18 Piece Dinnerware Set | Portmeirion with a picnic hamper/basket featuring archival floral motifs from the Botanic Garden collection.
18 Piece Anniversary Set
How amazing is this exquisite picnic hamper/basket? The hamper/basket, incredible on its own, is filled with an 18-piece dinnerware set which includes six each of the Botanic Garden dinner plates, salad plates, and pasta bowls. This commemorative basket and dinnerware set is available exclusively at portmeirion.com. Click here to purchase.
An Elegant Picnic with Botanic Garden
When I learned about the beautiful commemorative picnic hamper/basket containing the Portmeirion Botanic Garden plates and bowls, my first thought was to create an elegant picnic in our backyard this summer.
I love to put a little twist on the ordinary and create something that is just a little bit unexpected and this basket was a perfect inspiration.
A Little History
In case you are unfamiliar with this pattern, here is a little history for you. Portmeirion Botanic Garden is a true British classic, designed by the celebrated designer Susan Williams-Ellis in 1972. She was inspired by 19th-century botanical illustrations when she created the pattern which includes mixing and matching floral motifs.

Creating the Botanic Garden Picnic
I spread one of my favorite floral tablecloths on the grass and placed the coffee table from our outdoor sitting area on top of it. I grabbed my hyacinth placemats and decided on copper chargers because if you are going to have an elegant picnic, what better way to elevate a table than copper chargers!
Next, I snipped flowers from my cutting garden to create a centerpiece. Nothing fancy, just what was growing in the garden. I love how the yellow centers in the dahlias pick up the yellows in the botanic garden plates.
Each set of Botanic Garden collection plates or bowls includes six different botanical patterns. You know how I love to mix and match plates on a table and this pattern has that built-in for you. A bit of sophisticated whimsy!
I added my favorite green goblets to emphasize the green of the surrounding garden and also the vine pattern at the edge of the botanic garden plates and bowls. When creating a tablescape, I subscribe to the Tim Gunn of Project Runway philosophy that you don’t want it to match, you want it to go together.
I also used the Pimpernel Botanic Garden Tea Towels | Portmeirion as napkins and draped them underneath the salad plate and pasta bowl but on top of the dinner plate. I love that flowers are everywhere in this elegant garden picnic setting.
From the centerpiece, to the plates and bowls, to the tea towels that drape beyond the edge of the table leading your eye down to the floral tablecloth, this picnic is a floral immersion!
Perhaps you did not know that Portmeirion has more than just china patterns in the Botanic Garden collection. How cute are these Pimpernel Botanic Garden Cotton Napkins S/4 | Portmeirion? And, they also have a Portmeirion Botanic Garden 20 Piece Flatware Set | Portmeirion! The pattern, also called Botanic Garden is a modern take on the triple leaf pattern found at the edge of the dishes and the napkins. The flatware is sturdy 18/10 stainless steel and dishwasher safe, which is practical and important!
More Portmeirion Botanic Garden
Portmeirion has a number of collections, Botanic Garden and Botanic Garden Bouquet being two of my favorites. Each of these patterns includes not only plates and bowls, but also includes many serveware pieces.
I fell head over heels in love with the Botanic Garden Bouquet 4-Piece Herb Set above. How darling do my herbs look growing in this adorable set in my kitchen window?
You all know how I love a dipping sauce! I found this Botanic Garden 5-Piece Accent Bowl Set that comes with four dipping bowls and a pretty tray. My favorite thing about this set is the sweet ladybug on the edge of the tray.
Oh my gosh, the butterflies that look like they have just landed, perched on the pieces of the Botanic Garden Bouquet tea set literally make my heart flutter. I put the tea set out on tea towels that are part of the Botanic Garden collection. Please pass a crumpet!
Placing a table in an unexpected place is one of my signature ways to create a unique experience. We had such a fun evening dining by the pool. Sitting on the floral tablecloth surrounded by florals on the table was a feast for the eyes.

I am obsessed with my Portmeirion Pomona pattern. Have almost all the pieces for 20+ years and not one chip or broken piece! Love your blog!
I
I’ve loved mine for years. I have many pieces. I also have pieces of Portmeiron “The Queen’s Hidden Garden” which are more delicate wild flowers on white background which I’ve used for years. I agree that they are wonderful quality. They are as beautiful now as when they were new. Love them.
Really love this pattern. It’s so “happy” and summery. I currently have 14 sets of dishes, each a place setting for 12-16. Entertaining is my passion. I was going to have Hub build tomato cages; however, I ‘m beginning to need a space for all of my dishes, etc. 🫣
I’m not on Instagram – how can I enter this wonderful give-away?
