Valentine Crafts in Less than an Hour

I have always loved silver lockets. They are what inspired me to create these DIY metallic clay hearts as one of my latest Valentine crafts.

I love making Valentine crafts and these clay hearts are a perfect combination of vintage-inspired and easy to make. They make a great Valentine’s gift or Valentine’s decor for your own home. Ready to learn how to make them?

For centuries, the locket— a pendant that opens to contain a portrait, a lock of hair, or a tiny love letter—has been a classic accessory. There is nothing more romantic than wearing a reminder of someone you love close to your heart. 

Lockets evolved from ancient amulets. European designs for lockets appear to date to the 16th century, when small pendants were worn to conceal good luck charms, small fabric squares soaked in perfume to ward off the poor smells on public thoroughfares, painted portraits, and even, on occasion, poison.

I came up with the idea to make a clay heart with a similar impression to the traditional silver lockets. I love how they turned out!

What You Need to Make Your Metallic Heart Valentine Crafts

Sculpey Oven Bake Clay, White

1/4″ Rolling Pin

Heart-shaped cookie cutters, of various sizes

Folk Art Metallic Silver Paint

1/8 yard fabric lace

How To Make Vintage Silver Locket Inspired Clay Hearts

Break off a piece of clay and work it through your fingers to soften it. Roll about 1/4″ thick with a rolling pin. Cut out shapes with heart-shaped cookie cutters.

Select an area of the lace and press down on the clay. Use a rolling pin to enhance the indentation.

Carefully pull off the lace.

Place each clay heart on a lined cookie sheet. Bake according to directions, for approximately 15 minutes.

I absolutely love how they came out! The indentation left from the lace reminds me so much of a vintage locket.

Shake the metallic acrylic paint and then apply it with a paintbrush.

Finished Craft

Let them cool and then find fun ways to display them throughout your home for Valentine’s Day!

These would also make a lovely gift or a sweet gift tag by using a skewer to poke a hole before baking, and then thread a ribbon through the hole to attach to a gift! You could also add holes to all of the hearts to make ornaments for a Valentine’s tree!
