Unique Shape and Size

The stick-like shape of cookie sticks sets them apart from traditional cookies. This elongated form is not only visually appealing but also offers a different eating experience. They are easy to hold, making them a convenient snack for both adults and children.

Versatile for Dipping and Decorating

Their shape makes them ideal for dipping in chocolate, caramel, or other coatings. The long, flat surface is perfect for a variety of decorations, such as sprinkles, nuts, or icing designs.

Portability and Convenience

Cookie sticks are highly portable and less messy than regular cookies, making them a great on-the-go snack. They can be easily packed for picnics, school lunches, or as part of a dessert buffet.

Perfect for Gifting

Due to their unique shape and decorative potential, cookie sticks are excellent for gifting. They can be beautifully packaged in jars, boxes, or wrapped individually, making them a charming homemade gift for various occasions.

Customizable Flavors and Textures

Like traditional cookies, cookie sticks can be made in a myriad of flavors and textures. From chocolate chip to lemon zest, oatmeal to shortbread, the possibilities for customization are endless.

Fun for Kids

Kids love food that comes in fun shapes and sizes. Cookie sticks can be a delightful treat for children to enjoy, and they can also participate in the baking and decorating process.

Elegant Presentation

Their distinctive shape allows for elegant presentation. Lined up in a row or arranged artistically on a platter, cookie sticks can add a touch of sophistication to any dessert table.

The Recipe: Shortbread-Style Valentine’s Cookie Sticks

  • Mix the ingredients according to the recipe and refrigerate to cool. Roll out the dough, then use a dough cutter (or a scraper) to cut out the cookie sticks. I cut mine 4″ x 3/8″.
  • Bake as instructed, but watch the cookie sticks carefully. You don’t want to overcook them. Place the chocolate in a double boiler and melt. Add the coloring and coconut oil to thin to a dipping consistency.
  • Get your sprinkles ready, then pour the melted chocolate into a tall, slender jar. Dip the cookies into the chocolate and let them dry on parchment paper.
  • Before the chocolate dries, add decorative sprinkles on top. I added orange sprinkles to the Cranberry Orange sticks!

These delightful treats are a fusion of shortbread-style cookies, luxurious chocolate, and unique flavor combinations, including Cranberry, Cranberry Orange, and classic Butter Shortbread. These cookie sticks are an easy baking recipe and such a pretty and fun treat to serve and enjoy.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 13 minutes
Additional Time 25 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 8 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For Cranberry and Cranberry Orange variations: 1/2 cup dried cranberries (chopped fine), zest of one orange (for Cranberry Orange only)
  • 10 oz. package of White Melting chocolate (dark, milk, or white)
  • Food coloring
  • 1 - 2 tsp coconut oil
  • Sprinkles, crushed nuts, or other decorations

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 325°F (175°C) and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the softened butter and powdered sugar and stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Mix the Ingredients: Mix until combined.
  4. Divide dough: If you want to make multiple flavors, divide the dough. I made plain, cranberry, and orange cranberry.
  5. Add Flavors: For the Cranberry and Cranberry Orange sticks, fold in the chopped cranberries, and add orange zest for the latter.
  6. Shape the Dough: Roll the dough into a flat rectangle, about 3/8 inches thick, then cut into long, thin strips (about 1/2 inch wide and 4 inches long). Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  7. Bake: Place the strips on the prepared baking sheet and cool again in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  9. Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Melt the Chocolate: Melt your chosen chocolate in a bowl, either using a microwave or a double boiler. You don't need an actual double boiler, just two fans that fit on top of each other. Place water in the bottom pan and boil the water. Place the pan with chocolate on top and melt. Add coconut oil for the right consistency.
  11. Dip the Cookies: Dip one end of each cooled cookie stick into the melted chocolate, covering about half the cookie.
  12. Add Decorations: Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle your choice of decorations over the chocolate-covered part. You can also place chocolate in a pastry bag and pipe thin lines on the sticks.
  13. Set: Lay the cookies back on the parchment paper and allow the chocolate to harden.
