Inspiration for My Bedroom Makeover in a Month

| |

Week two of the Bedroom Makeover in a Month Challenge is over and I have some catching up to do! Check out all of my progress.

The Bedroom Makeover Inspiration Photo

I cannot believe it is the end of week two in our Makeover in a Month Challenge. I still have so much to do.

Which is a roundabout way of saying, I am behind!

I cannot believe it is the end of week two in our Bedroom Makeover in a Month Challenge. I am doing this challenge with three amazing bloggers, Karianne at Thistllewood Farms, Marion with Miss Mustard Seed, and Melissa from The Inspired Room. Be sure to head to their blogs to see their makeover projects.

Our boys were in town this past week and stayed in the third-floor bedroom. They flew into town kept their distance from all of us so I wasn’t allowed to go up to their room. (I love that they are so careful these days.) Thus,  I had no access to the room to start my remodel.

So this past week was a “behind the scenes” planning week.

I did stumble upon the perfect inspiration photo. The photo above is the master bedroom that belongs to Liz at Love Grows Wild. Isn’t it fabulous?  I have seen this photo on Instagram many times and I love everything Liz did here. We have a similar wall behind our bed but it’s not near as dramatic as my inspiration photo.

This is the “before photo” of our third-floor bedroom that needs remodeling. Duh.

I am pretty sure that most people find an inspiration room before they plan a remodel. I didn’t do that. I selected all of my furniture, planned out most of the room, and then found my inspiration room.

I never said I did things in a conventional way. I am far from it.

The Bookcases

Bedroom Makeover Before Photos

There is no doubt that these bookcases need some organization. But this is where the “function over fashion” or “fashion over function” dilemma happens.

My husband loves all of these books. I love some of them, not all of them.

Here is my first choice of what I would like to do with this bookcase.

But that means we would have to get rid of a gazillion books.

It is more likely I will have to do something like this.

(both of these photos are from bookbub.com).

We shall see!

The Bedroom Furniture

I mentioned that I had ordered all of the furniture from Bed, Bath and Beyond. I am thrilled that most of it arrived less than a week after ordering!

Here are some of the items I selected. The links to each item are listed below.

All of the Bed, Bath and Beyond items above can be found at the corresponding links below.

The Reading Chair

I also solved my chair upholstery problem.  I found another chair for $5 and I have decided to make a slipcover for it.

In case you are wondering, I have tons of sewing experience and no slipcover experience. (I can do this!)

So what do you think?

I  know. This isn’t the most amazing looking chair. In fact, it’s ugly. But it has good bones.

And it will look amazing with a slipcover on the chair and ottoman.

Before I get a gazillion messages, I may not have any slipcover experience, but I am really good at sewing. I have sewed all of my life and I have made suits, jackets, dresses, school play costumes, tailored shirts, and my wedding dress.

I look at it this way. It can’t be that hard to make a slipcover. A tailored jacket has to be just as hard. Or harder. Right?

This is the fabric I picked out.  It’s a traditional striped ticking fabric. I selected this one because I didn’y want to struggle with matching a large design on the fabric. Hopefully, my fabric is thick enough to hide the chair fabric and doesn’t need lining. If it does, well I have experience with lining too!

I ordered 14 yards which should be more than plenty. I am fine with that because I can always make some pillows!

So what’s on the schedule for next week?

Pretty much only remodeling the bedroom and nothing else.

Here is my to-do list.

  1. Paint the bedroom
  2. Change the light fixtures.
  3. Put the new bed together and decide if I am going to add wood or wallpaper to the wall behind the headboard.
  4. Measure and cut out the slipcover.

Oh my. There is a lot to do.

But  I cannot wait!

  1. Oh, I just love all your choices and you will nail that slip cover with that great fabric! (I wish I had your talent for sewing). That’s a wonderful book arrangement idea, and who knows, maybe one day grandchildren will enjoy going through them. Once again, thank you so much for sharing this with us. Can’t wait to see it all!

  2. Of course you can do the slipcover! I’ll bet you probably could probably handle re-upholstery if you took off the old fabric and used it as a pattern. You’ve got this! I love all of your selections and wonder what you will do behind the bed. Perhaps some neutral toned peel and stick grass-cloth or soft patterned wallpaper? Also, can you share the source for your fabric? Would you ever consider hiring it out for a professional to reupholster?

And the MOST important question? Where do you find such great $5 chairs, and one with an ottoman. to boot?

  3. This is a wonderful project. I have to , share that I just found the bestfabricstore. com. I had been looking for a site, as it is really hard to find good fabric that is reasonably priced. I have ordered fabric for curtains for my daughter, and purchased the best lining fabric ever, for another set of curtains for another daughter for 3.oo a yard. There customer service is the best,

Good luck on the room. Your chair will be easy, just pretend it is a person!!!!!

  4. I LOVE that chair and ottoman and wish it was right here in my bedroom. I already have the fabric I would cover or slipcover it with and everything! I have a chair and ottoman in my bedroom that needs the cover/slipcover attention but it is a wingback chair and I’m intimidated by it even though I also have lots of sewing experience. I cannot wait to see yours and be even more inspired!

  5. You are so multi -talented Leslie! Can’t believe you made your wedding dress 🙏🏻Love all your choices , can’t wait to see if you add the wood to the wall, it’s going to all look amazing. Would love to see how you make a slip cover.

  6. I have the SAME inspiration picture for my upstairs bedroom! I love that room. My husband/handman is busy right not putting up board and batten in the living room. Then he’s off to transform upstairs room. Can’t wait to see your finished room!

  7. What a fun post. That photo sure is an inspiration indeed! I’m excited to see your new bookshelf arrangement. We have a long wall of white, waist-high bookshelves filled with our old books in a long, horizontal rainbow spectrum (putting things in color order is one of my favorite things!).

And I can totally empathize with the feeling of wanting to make my own slipcovers, but sometimes I feel a little intimidated and haven’t gotten to yet (mostly just due to babies and not having enough hand-free time to make it succeed). I bet you’ll make a lovely one once you get at it!

I did have one question for you though, maybe it’s silly, but I’m curious what happens with the exposed wood corners on the arms. Do you cover them with something soft, or foam, first so they are cushioned under the slipcover, or will there just be hard wood points there hiding under the slipcover cloth? I couldn’t picture what one does to slipcover something when it’s not fully upholstered/cushioned allover underneath, and thought I’d ask!

Thank you for sharing. : )

  8. Appreciating the time and effort you put into your website and in-depth information you offer. I just Love your bedroom makeover! Absolutely stunning. It must be pure heaven to wake up in the morning to such beautiful surroundings. I think it’s really important to have a relaxing and peaceful bedroom. To wake up every morning surrounded by a really fresh and transformed room must be a great way to start your day !! Well done.
