About a month ago we were at a wine tasting dinner and I noticed the incredible design of the bottle of Rose. I couldn’t stop thinking how easy it would be to remove the label and how elegant it would look on my table to serve water.

I left the wine dinner an hour later with some empty rose bottles!

Discovering the Beauty in White Wine Bottles:

White wine bottles, especially rosé ones, are often overlooked pieces of art. Many come with intricate etchings, custom-formed structures, and unique color tints that set them apart from the standard green wine bottle. The pale blush of a rosé bottle, when hit by candlelight, can give off a mesmerizing glow, adding to the magic of your dinner ambiance.

Where to Find Interesting White Wine Bottles

1. Visit local wine stores: One of the best places to discover unique wine bottles is at local wine stores. Smaller stores, in particular, might have limited edition bottles with intricate designs, as they put extra effort into branding and presentation.
2. Wine Tastings: This is where I found my first recycled glass water bottles. Attending wine-tasting events can introduce you to a variety of wines and, by extension, a range of bottle designs. It’s an excellent opportunity to savor delicious wines and scout for potential water bottles for your next event.
3. Ask Friends and Family: Let your loved ones know about your new upcycling project. They might just hand over some beautiful bottles they’d otherwise recycle or throw away.
4. Frequent Thrift Stores: Some thrift stores or antique shops might have old wine bottles with interesting designs. These can be a goldmine for unique finds.

Prepping Your Bottles for Entertaining

Once you have your collection, it’s time to get them ready for the table.

1. Label Removal: Soaking the bottle in warm soapy water for an hour usually loosens the adhesive. You can then use a scraper or an old credit card to gently peel off the label. I like to use Goo Gone because it takes just a few minutes to remove the label and it always comes off in one piece!
2. Washing and Sterilizing: After label removal, thoroughly wash the inside of the bottle with warm soapy water. Rinse well. To ensure the bottle is sterile, you can fill it with a mixture of one-part white vinegar to five parts water and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse again thoroughly with cold water.
3. Drying: Let the bottle air dry completely. If you’re in a hurry, a hairdryer can be used to speed up the process but ensure the inside is moisture-free before storing or using.

The Sustainable and Chic Edge

Apart from the undeniable aesthetic appeal, using recycled wine bottles as water vessels carries a green edge. It’s a step towards sustainability, reducing the demand for new glass production and cutting down on waste.

Moreover, there’s an undeniable charm in knowing that the bottle has a story, a past life where it housed a delightful wine, and is now a part of your entertaining repertoire.

Setting the Table

When arranging your table, consider placing a wine bottle-turned-water bottle next to every two or three guests, depending on the size of your table. You can also add a personal touch:

• Custom Tags: Add tags with a simple “Water” label or a fun message like “Eau de Elegance”.
• Fresh Garnishes: Add slices of cucumber, lemon, or sprigs of mint to the water for a refreshing twist.
• Chill Before Serving: Ensure your water is cool. You can refrigerate the bottles or place them in ice buckets before serving.
