Seventeen years ago we undertook a major remodeling project in our home. We redid the entire back half of the first floor which included the kitchen, two bathrooms, the family room, my office and the back porch and patio area. We extended the family room out the back and added a covered porch and brick patio.
We planned out our vision, hired an architect and found a wonderful contractor. Things started out wonderfully and were moving along at a great pace. And then we got “the call”. The “call”?
I had been scouring a few stores, Craigslist and a few online sites for two rod iron chairs for the back patio. The other day I was looking at Facebook and a link popped up for Facebook Marketplace. So I decided to try my luck. Sure enough, someone had posted a love seat and chair in black rod iron just nine minutes before. The good news? The cost was $75. The bad news? They were about 90 minutes away. Each. Way.
It’s almost summer and I have been thinking long and hard that it is time to spruce up our back porch. I love this area and would like to spend more time out here. We are lucky that we can use our covered porch all year round. Since we live in Southern California the weather is nice pretty much all of the time. Summer nights are really pleasant (and we don’t have any bugs to speak of). We don’t get much rain (although this year we had more rain in one year than the last five combined). Winter evenings can be cool, but since the porch has a wood-burning fireplace and heaters in the ceiling, it stays pretty comfortable in the winter. I put up drapes a few years ago so if it’s chilly (which is about twenty days a year) then we can close them to keep the heat in.
