Creating a Grandkids Retreat

It’s time for a room transformation in our home. We have decided to transform our old weight room/sleeping porch into a dedicated space for our grandkids.

Our home has always been a place of gathering, laughter, and cherished memories. Everything we have done in our home has been for the family, making it comfortable for our kids and grandson to visit. When we decided to transform our old weight room/sleeping porch into a dedicated space for our grandkids, we knew it would require some work, but the result would be worth every effort.

From Weight Room to Grandkids’ Haven

I can’t wait to share how I converted this neglected space into a warm and inviting bedroom for our little ones, complete with blackout drapes, storage solutions, baby essentials, and thoughtful touches to ensure their comfort and safety.

Embracing the Transformation

Our old weight room/sleeping porch had served its purpose over the years, but it was time for a fresh start. The first step was to clear the clutter and create a blank canvas for the transformation ahead. We removed the old exercise equipment, stored away unused items, and cleaned the space thoroughly to prepare for its new role as a grandkids’ bedroom.

Letting in the Light (or Not)

With three windows in the sleeping porch, natural light flooded the space during the day, which was perfect for workouts but less than ideal for naptime or bedtime. To address this, I installed blackout drapes on all three windows to create a cozy, serene environment conducive to restful sleep. These drapes block out light and provide insulation and privacy, making the room comfortable and inviting at any time of day.

I did have to hem the drapes above the bench, but other than that, installation was a breeze!

Creating Storage Solutions

With kids comes an abundance of stuff—diapers, clothes, toys, books, and more. To keep everything organized and easily accessible, we incorporated storage solutions into the room.

We added shelves and bins for diapers, wipes, other essentials, a dresser for clothes, and a toy chest for toys and books. Having designated storage areas lets us quickly find what we need and keep the room tidy and clutter-free.

Stocking Up on Baby Essentials

As grandparents, we wanted to ensure that our grandkids feel at home when they visit. This meant stocking up on baby essentials to make their stay as comfortable and convenient as possible. We purchased diapers, wipes, a baby sound machine, a portable stroller, toys, books, and other items they might need during their visit.

Having these essentials on hand eliminates the need for our kids to bring everything with them and ensures that our grandkids have everything they need for a pleasant stay.

Finding the Perfect Crib

While a portable crib had served us well in the past, our grandson would quickly outgrow it, so it was time to find a more permanent solution. We shopped around for a crib that met our safety, durability, and style needs.

After much research and deliberation, we found the perfect Kendall crib at Pottery Barn Kids that provides a safe and comfortable sleeping environment and beautifully complements the room’s decor.

Adding Comfort and Style

To finish the room, I made a cushion for the built-in bench.

This provides comfort for our grandkids and adds a pop of color and texture to the space.

I chose a durable and easy-to-clean fabric that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use. With throw pillows and blankets, the bench becomes a cozy spot for reading, playing, or relaxing.

A Grandkids’ Retreat

Transforming our old weight room/sleeping porch into a grandkids’ bedroom has been a labor of love, but seeing the joy and excitement on our grandkids’ faces makes it all worthwhile. With blackout drapes, storage solutions, baby essentials, safety measures, a new crib, and added comfort and style, we’ve created a warm and inviting space where our grandkids can feel at home.

Whether they’re napping, playing, or spending time with us, we know this room will be a cherished retreat for our little ones for years to come.
