I have posted plenty of photos of our family room. But they have been very sneaky.
There is a very interesting room in our house that is located off of our family room and living room. It has been known as my office for the last 17 years and it was in great need of a makeover. Why? Because it’s really dark and kind of claustrophobic. (And to be totally honest, it is NEVER this clean.)
I had been scouring a few stores, Craigslist and a few online sites for two rod iron chairs for the back patio. The other day I was looking at Facebook and a link popped up for Facebook Marketplace. So I decided to try my luck. Sure enough, someone had posted a love seat and chair in black rod iron just nine minutes before. The good news? The cost was $75. The bad news? They were about 90 minutes away. Each. Way.
Now that the not-so-fun part of my Back Porch makeover is out of the way (i.e. cleaning) it is time to begin the fun part. I saw these hanging shelves on Instagram (thank you @cottonstem) and have been watching them on the Hobby Lobby website. As soon as they went on sale for 50% off I bought two of them right away. I knew they would look fantastic in front of the lattice on each side of the fireplace.
It’s almost summer and I have been thinking long and hard that it is time to spruce up our back porch. I love this area and would like to spend more time out here. We are lucky that we can use our covered porch all year round. Since we live in Southern California the weather is nice pretty much all of the time. Summer nights are really pleasant (and we don’t have any bugs to speak of). We don’t get much rain (although this year we had more rain in one year than the last five combined). Winter evenings can be cool, but since the porch has a wood-burning fireplace and heaters in the ceiling, it stays pretty comfortable in the winter. I put up drapes a few years ago so if it’s chilly (which is about twenty days a year) then we can close them to keep the heat in.
So what are my thoughts for our porch makeover?
