How to Set a Romantic Valentine’s Dinner For Two

Valentine’s Day in our home has always been all about our oldest son Andrew because it is his birthday. We hosted birthday parties for many years on Valentine’s Day and they were always fun (but without the pink and red hearts). But those parties are a thing of the past (sob!) since our boys are grown and out of the house. This year I thought it might be fun to set a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner table for two. So I am going to find the perfect location in our home for a romantic dinner for me and my husband!

Today I have teamed with six other bloggers who have also planned Valentine’s Dinner for two. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see their amazing photos and the links to their blog posts.

My first task was to choose a place in our home for the dinner where the two of us have never dined alone before. That meant all of our traditional tables such as the dining room, family room, and outdoor large table were not an option. My first thought was the coffee table in our living room. But that would have meant we needed to sit on the floor and I didn’t think it would be all that comfortable. So I selected a dinner for two outside on our back porch. With the heaters in the ceiling of our porch and the roaring fire, I knew it would work. Not to mention the fact we live in Southern California and our weather is pretty mild at this time of year.

My first task was to find a table that worked for the two of us. I have a small folded oval wood table in the dining room and decided it would work perfectly. Next, I added a floor-length white table cloth. To top it off, I went through my antique quilts and found a red and white valentine quilt. How perfect is this one?

I made the decision to add red roses, which is unusual for me as I am more of a pink rose person. But I like that they are different. I arranged them in one of my galvanized vases and I like the rustic look.

I pulled out my red vintage transferware dinner plates and my Rae Dunn heart plates. A few weeks ago I made some Fabric Valentine Hearts so I added them for more decor to the table.

Next, I added my favorite candles from Antique Candleworks. I love mixing all sorts of their candles together. Their scents are incredible.

Once the table was set, I lit the fire. And dimmed the lights. Wow. What a great location for a romantic dinner for two. Now all I have left is to cook the dinner. No problem.

  2. I loved your table setting by that lovely fire! That quilt was just perfect too add on top of the table. I also loved that you have the red transfer ware. Most people collect the blue, which I love as well, but the red was refreshing to see. I’m a pink roses kind of gal, but with those dishes and that quilt topper, you just needed those beautiful red roses! Just lovely!

  3. This is my first view of your lovely blog and I am enchanted! Your fireside dinning for Valentine’s Day is perfect and definitely my kind of romantic setting. Sad as it is, I will not be with my Valentine tomorrow as he is up near Montreal, Canada and I am in Dallas, Texas! A video phone call will have to do but, without fail, I will remember your beautiful idea next year!

I look forward to receiving your emails and am anxious to see what wonderful notion you come up with next! Your home is perfectly lovely and I imagine you, like me, count your blessings every day.

Have a wonderful Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Til next time, Lucy Beliveau!
