How To Make a Fresh Tree Skirt

I decided the dress form in my craft room really needed a dress for our party. Ha. I know, it sounds a bit ridiculous but I figured, why not! For months she has been wearing an apron I made with a Magnolia Embroidered patch and my embroidery machine… I knew it was time for something big. Something like a fresh tree skirt for the Holidays.

The first thing I did was head to Home Depot for some supplies.

What You Need

  • Dress form
  • Chicken wire
  • Wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Gloves (to protect your hands)
  • Fresh pine boughs
  • Fabric or very wide (8″) ribbon for dress bodice

I went to Home Depot and got a carload full of fresh greens. You can find them at the Christmas lot area and they are free! These are the remnants that are cut off when they add stands to the Christmas trees.

Cut a piece of chicken wire to form the front of a skirt. Bend darts in the waist so it fits her snugly. If necessary use some wire to hold secure the darts. Cut a piece of chicken wire for the back and loosely thread the wire on the sides to hold the front and back sides together.

Cut the fresh pine boughs in the lengths as seen below. Starting at the bottom of the skirt, carefully thread the branch through the chicken wire until it is secure.

Add another layer above the first, making sure to hide the chicken wire.

Continue all the way up the skirt.

When you reach the top of the skirt, cut the stems to just a few inches. Place the branches horizontal around the top of the skirt.

For her bodice, wrap fabric or very wide ribbon around the dress form to create a top. Attach in the back with straight pins. I added two darts so the bodice fits her snugly.

Add a few extra boughs of pine so that it hides where the bodice meets the chicken wire.

I absolutely love how this came out. And it smells just fabulous!
