Finding Comfort in Your Home

finding comfort in your home
How do you find comfort in your home when it comes to décor? It seems like it should be simple. There are a few changes I have made to our home to make it more comfortable. This month I am working hard to add the comforts of home all throughout our house.

So how can you make a room comfortable?

Pillows

I love pillows. My husband, on the other hand, immediately tosses them aside when he sits on the couch or our bed. I am convinced this is a “guy thing”. Our living room couches have five pillows and our master bed has six pillows. Pillows are the best! At least I love them. I love the textured pillows we have in our family room.

You can never have too many pillows on a bed. And lap quilts are important too!

Blankets and Quilts

We have so many blankets and quilts in our house you would think we lived in Alaska instead of Southern California. The most important thing you need to make your home décor comfy for the winter season is blankets and throws. I like to have a few throw blankets in every room of our house. My favorite all time DIY project last year was making this no-sew-loopy-yarn-blanket. It requires no knitting or crocheting. All you need to do is “finger knit” and loop yarn through loops. If you want to see how I made it, head to this my post about how to make a loopy yarn chenille blanket

The boy’s bedrooms have quilts on the ends of the beds and of course, lots of pillows!

I always put quilts on the chairs when we dine outside. It’s such a great thing for guests because if they get cold, everyone will want to head inside and the party may end way too early!

Good Lighting

There are a few more things you can do to add comfort to your home. Is there proper lighting? As I get older I find I need more light in my rooms. Lighting can add comfort to a room. So don’t hesitate to add a lamp or two if needed. One of my favorite projects in our home was when I created this hanging ladder chandelier. Not only did it provide a lot of light, but it created a statement piece in the room.

Comfortable Furniture

Next, evaluate if the furniture is comfortable. Maybe you need an ottoman added to a comfy chair. Or perhaps you need a side table for someone to rest a drink or their phone. Sometimes a small adjustment can make a huge difference in the comforts of your home.

Create Conversation Areas

I like to make sure the areas in our rooms have a purpose. We don’t use our living room very often so I try to make certain areas more conducive to reading or playing games. It’s really important that a room is good for conversation. Sometimes you need to move the furniture closer together to facilitate this. When we were in our Airbnb in London a few Christmases ago, it was only a few hours before I had my boys help me move around all of the furniture in the living room.  I was happy to learn the owner liked it better and left it the way I had arranged it!

February is the perfect time to add back the comforts of home to your rooms. I like the texture and neutral colors. I would like to make some new pillow covers. I am going to start making pillows for the Waco home. I also want to make a macramé styled pillow with string. I am ready to try DIY’s this year that I have never seen before. I just think they might be really fun. It’s a bit risky and you might see some real FAILED projects but we won’t know until we try, right?

Making your home is not expensive. All you need to do is pull some things out of the cupboards. Stay warm and enjoy the cold winter nights. Light the fire and grab a hot cup of tea. You can stay comfortable and cozy all winter long with just a few extra things in your home.

  1. I can’t wait to see the throw you knit! I love those big chunky throws too but there is NO way I am spending that kind of money on a throw.

  2. You mentioned going to the LA Garment district to purchase fabrics. Can you tell me the name(s) of some of the best fabric stores in that area? Thanks and happy sewing.

  3. Leslie,
