Taking Control of Your Instagram

What a busy week! I have so many things on my to-do list and a really fun giveaway happening this week. So let me update you on a few things and then I am going to share some tips I have that I think can help you take control of your Instagram account.

Giveaways

First, let’s start with my giveaway. In case you missed it, this week is kind of a landmark for me. It’s my one year anniversary on Instagram. I have never had so much fun in my life and the only way this has been possible is because of all of you! Your support, follows, shares, and comments have made this so much fun! As a way to say thanks to all of you, I am giving away some of my favorite things this week on my Instagram account.

On Monday I gave away four of my favorite black and white china dinner plates. The winner was Debi @treasure.nest. On Tuesday I gave away the delivery of thirty fresh white hydrangeas from @flowers_by_gallonei. And I am pleased to announce that the winner is … Nancy from @whiteshabbycottage!

Wednesday’s giveaway is four of my all-time favorite pleated burlap placemats from Pier 1. The placemats are pictured above.

To enter, just head on over to my Instagram account, find the picture similar to the one above, and “like” the photo. That’s all you have to do!

Taking Back Your Instagram Account

I think the most common complaint that I hear on a daily basis about Instagram is, “I never see any of my favorite feeds anymore!”. We all know the Instagram algorithm has some secret formula that determines whose feeds we get to see and when we see them. So, instead of seeing posts in chronological order, the Instagram app shows you what posts it thinks you’ll find the most interesting first. And that may not align with what you actually want to see at the top of your feed, which means you may miss out on some important posts.

And while there’s no way to revert your feed back to chronological order (yet) there is a way to ensure you don’t miss out on the posts that are important to you.  It’s called Turn on Post Notifications.

To get push notifications for someone you follow on Instagram:
1. Open their profile page.

2. Tap the triple-dot button in the upper-right corner.

3. From the menu, tap Turn on Post Notifications.

Once you do this, you will get a notification any time the account posts on Instagram.

I have turned on post notifications on my Instagram for about thirty accounts. I love the fact that I am seeing more of the accounts that I want to see and that I no longer feel like I am missing the posts of my favorite accounts.

If you want to try this out, head on over to my Instagram account and practice. Haha. I would love it if you turned on my post notifications!

  1. Thank you for this! Now, have you figured out how we can get rid of the ‘sponsored’ posts showing up constantly? Whatever new algorithm Insta has adopted, it has taken some of the joy out of scrolling and replaced with annoyance.

  2. My Instagram does not have that whole feature. It has the 3 dots..then it says Block User, Report User and Cancel. I have noticed that Instagramers have said Swipe to read. I do not have that feature either. I have Instagram through Google and Yahoo. I do have a Instagram account set up, but I do not have anything posted.
Can anybody out there help me? I noticed that I don’t get to see the Instagramers that I really want to see.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Deborah, are you using Instagram through your browser, or your phone? You really need to use a smart phone to get all the bells and whistles that Instagram offers. The options are pretty limited if you try and use it through a computer browser.
