AFTER

Can you believe it?

It looks quite different, don’t you think? One of my girlfriends asked if we raised the ceiling. Another friend was convinced we had added more windows.

Truthfully, all we did was paint it with Dunn Edwards Swiss Coffee white paint.

That’s right.

Paint.

It’s amazing what some white paint can do!

Craft Room Transformation Ideas

A home should reflect the personalities and passions of those who live there, right? When certain spaces don’t quite align with the overall ambiance of the house, it’s time for a makeover.

I am so grateful I took our dark-paneled office (with lots of windows) and underwent a stunning transformation into a vibrant and inviting craft room. By understanding the process and tips involved, you can also turn any room in your house into a creative haven that complements your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.

Assessing the Space

Before embarking on a craft room makeover, it’s essential to take a good look at the current state of the space. In our case, the dark paneled office felt dated and out of place with the rest of the house’s bright and farmhouse-style interior.

Consider your craft room’s location, size, and natural lighting. Identify what elements work well and what needs improvement.

Choosing the Right Color Scheme:

The power of paint should never be underestimated. By selecting the right color scheme, you can instantly breathe new life into a room.

In our craft room makeover, we decided to paint the dark-paneled walls white, which dramatically changed the entire ambiance. White walls create a clean canvas, making it easier to add pops of color with decor and craft supplies.

Craft Room Organization

One of the primary objectives of a craft room is to facilitate creativity. To achieve this, it’s essential to declutter and organize the space effectively. Assess your craft supplies and sort them into categories. Invest in storage solutions such as shelves, bins, drawers, and cabinets to keep everything in order.

I bought this automotive metal cabinet to use as storage for my craft accessories. I cleaned it up and painted it and added labels.

A clutter-free and well-organized space will inspire you to work on your crafts more often.

Maximizing Natural Light

Natural light can significantly impact the atmosphere of any room. In our craft room makeover, we were fortunate to have windows that brought in ample daylight.

To make the most of a natural resource, opt for sheer curtains that allowed light to filter through while maintaining a sense of privacy. Ensure that your craft room is well-lit during the day to reduce eye strain and foster creativity.

Winter Home Decor Crafting

In addition to natural light, adequate artificial lighting is crucial, especially for evening crafting sessions. Invest in task lighting, such as adjustable desk lamps or track lighting, to illuminate your workstations. Also, consider adding ambient lighting, such as string lights or fairy lights, to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

I don’t craft much at night so I went with a white wood stylish chandelier.

Creating Functional Workspaces

Craft Room Organization After Photos

Crafting involves various activities that require specific workstations. Designate areas for sewing, painting, cutting, and other crafts. Customize each workspace to suit your needs and ensure all necessary supplies are easily accessible.

A sturdy and spacious craft table with ample storage will become the heart of your creative endeavors. I found this high table (I am 5’11” so tall is good!) at a flea market, refinished it, and painted the legs black. It’s perfect for so many tasks and you can see how I transformed the table here.

Personalizing the Decor

Fabric and Craft Storage

A craft room is an opportunity to showcase your personality and style. Personalize the decor with artwork, photographs, inspirational quotes, and decorative elements that resonate with you. Consider hanging a corkboard for pinning up project ideas, sketches, and to-do lists.

Incorporating Creative Storage Solutions

In a craft room, the right storage solutions are essential to keep supplies tidy and accessible. Utilize wall-mounted shelves, transparent containers, and hanging organizers to optimize storage without compromising on aesthetics. Pegboards are excellent for displaying frequently used tools and keeping them within arm’s reach.

By carefully assessing the room’s features, choosing the right color scheme, optimizing lighting, organizing supplies, and incorporating creative storage solutions, you can craft a delightful haven that sparks inspiration and enhances your creative journey.

Remember to infuse your style into the decor, making the craft room truly your own. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your craft supplies, and get ready to transform that neglected room into a place where your imagination can soar. Happy crafting!

Our Third Floor Mother in Law Suite

I hate to ruin it for you but I have outgrown this craft room. I am a new partner with a company that makes the most amazing storage unit for craft rooms. It should arrive next week and I have decided to move all of my crafting up to the 3rd floor.

It’s a big space and it needs reorganizing so this is a perfect solution.

This amazing product will fit perfectly on our third floor and I cannot wait until it arrives. And you know I will share everything with you!

  1. Dear Leslie, I’ve followed you and your work for several years and thought I knew you. Now I’m beginning to suspect you are not a real person. How could you be just one, ordinary person like me and accomplish all you do. 7. I had no idea I was going to enjoy your house blog so much. The project room change is stunning. When we moved into our current home the office had dark wood and dark built-ins which I promptly painted white. My husband about had a heart attack, but we both love the light and airy feeling. I am curious what you did with that awesome desk you replaced with the new (awesome) table. Do tell!

    1. Hi Terry! I found this high table at a flea market, refinished it, and painted the legs black. Perfect for crafting 🥰

  9. I liked it an office but then making it your light filled, beautiful craft room was a much better use of space. I also use a tall drafting table because I prefer standing when crating, sewing, painting. It will be fun to watch you turn your 3rd floor into a huge craft room with special storage. Will you use the whole den area? What will the office, then craft room be used for now?

  10. I’ve always loved your craft room. Trying to understand the size as I plan out a layout for my house. I was hoping you might share with me the size of the room? It would be much appreciated. Hard for me to sense the size of a space that’s just on paper.
